  1. no it is called the ring. it's only pronounced strangely by the japanese. hey, anyone seen battle royale?
  2. um, no they do not hide techniques. it is a catalogue of techniques. everything is there for you to see. if you cannot see then either you are a bit stupid or have a rubbish teacher. seeing as you say your instrutor has no bearing on your opinions then only one reason remains.
  3. so, um, mr instructor, why do you dress like that outside of the training hall?
  4. i think the best thing about being in a proper class is that you get to test what you have learnt against people of different size/strength.
  5. had a nasty scare in an s2000 once. it was the first set-up (before the revisions to rear geometry). took a corner a little bit too fast and for a moment, the sterring felt a bit jelly like and the back end started to wobble. took me an age and a hell of a lot of lock to keep on the road.... damn fun car to drive though. that engine is amazing.
  6. the way wing chun is taught/learnt means you don't think about what to do. in this respect whatever i learn after wing chun will not really interfere with my wing chun. after all, i am the one using the moves/theories/techniques. i am not bound by what it says in the book.
  7. so if we follow the usual lineage type thing then he is now teaching what he learnt i.e jkd
  8. you don't care for forms because in your opinion, the highest point in martial arts is in a ring of some sort. in that case, the forms have no point fot you. this does not mean that they are useless. we've have been through this with you before and i know that it is pointless talking to you about it because you will not see beyond what your instructor tells you. and no, katas are not to hide techniques? where did you get that useless piece of information?
  9. i always considered mike tyson to be a fighter first and foremost and a boxer second.
  10. i like the chinese schools' performances cos they tend to be deadly silent... well, except some of the forms where they start to make hissing noises!
  11. um, i think you nees to watch more jackie chan movies and go read about his past before you say he has no martial arts ability. what takes more skill? to use things you have learnt or to make up things from what you have learnt and make it look normal? and i think jackie chan trains way harder than most of you guys give him credit for because he has to do harder things with his body.
  12. well, not really inosanto like i say, it just sounds like jkd to me.
  13. for sme strange reason, i would trsut the u.n over the u.s any day. as for the thing about bristish history being "juiced up". how do you juice up the history of a country that has been invaded lord knows how many times? it serves no purpose and doesn't inform or educate. now not meaning to be unfair but the u.s has a history of wanting to sound/be better than everyone else and has been know to teach history that vaguely resembles the truth...
  14. but that's not how it looks in the book...
  15. i meant japanese ring or american ring
  16. the temple or the religion practiced in the temple? in either case it just goes back to my point, there is no definitive starting/first martial art. in theory, it is just some caveman somewhere deciding that if he puts his arm in a certain way he blocks better in fights. that would've been the first martial art. or if you want to get philosophical then the first martial art would be the idea of "maybe i can fight better if i do some planning"
  17. well, the u.s is the place that someone tries to sue mcdonalds for making them fat... where you have to have disclaimers in martial arts clubs telling you that you might get hurt... in case you missed it, i was having a jibe and your legal system...
  18. wing chun has its good points and wing chun has its bad points. it isn't for everybody and there are no short cuts to good results. just learning the forms will get you nowhere but just learning hard techniques will also get you nowhere. as for the guys who go in to try full contact karate, it's an interesting story. please tell more.
  19. hmmm, surely a mix of jun fan (bruce lee), jkd (bruce lee) and kali (inosanto) would just be jkd again???
  20. well, like the guy says, a lot of the time in training is spent doing the same things over and over again. when you first begin, you are learning the moves. when you are good at the moves, you make it natural to you. when you can make it natural, you learn to make it work. when you can make it work, you make it more efficient.
  21. which one? the original or the copy? kinda funny... was meaning to watch the u.s version.
  22. spare time??? i thikn you got a typo there don't you mean, "spar" time???
  23. well, just think of it this way, when you come a cross a kid who is screaming bruce lee style, twirling his sai, you will be safe in the knowledge that you can disarm, poke him in the ribs with the butt of the sai and then push him over, quietly...
  24. but it still sounds like a kid reading books, copying the things that he can do and saying that he does martial arts... you cannot simply take moves from a martial art and expect them to work well together, especially thngs from the more traditional chinese styles. you cite bruce lee but you seem to have forgotten that he was trained in a lot of martial arts and his writings were aimed at the martial artist who has training under his belt. once again, you cannot simply take his words and apply to whatever moves you can do and call it strategy. if it were this simple to get good in martial arts then there would be no need for schools.
