i want to learn
Drunken Monkey replied to Drunken Monkey's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
i know. was kinda just hoping that peple would give details about what they practice and stuff. y'know, nothing beats advice from people with personal experience and who better to ask than people who practice the grappling arts. -

hey hey, where abouts in kent? -
weapon that's fun to learn? tough one... i still have a fondness for the crazy old chinese things like nine section whip and three section staff. i know, they're totally non-improvisable but what the hell, they're fun. if i want to learn somethig that i can use with anything then i guess the good old stick/pole forms are the most sensible.

hey, why so aggressive...? -
was looking through some of you guys' profiles and saw that a lot of you take more than one style. was just wondering are you actively training in both? if so, do they interfere with each other in any way? also, what was your sifu/sensei/guru's reaction when you told them you were going to take another class?

but from what i gather, there are a few different schools. so what are the differences between them? -
(edited another typo... man i hate it when i do that...) hmm, hit something and be fine... not the message to to spread to the driving world. the point is you should be good enough to NOT hit anything in the first place. and um, just hate to tell you this but the only people that think american cars/trucks etc etc are good, are americans...

well i don't neccessarily need something that i can use WITH wing chun. after all, wing chun is almost formless in application so it doesn't really matter what it is i learn. at the end of the day i want to learn something that will give me more options when i have a weapon coming towards me. -
(fixed a grammatical error) and then there's the point that there is a world of differnce is learning something and being good at it. like i've said before, in the majority of fights, a wing chun guy will only ever use pak sau, tan sau and chung chui, maybe gan sau (proper one from bil gee) or kwan sau. that's just five moves (four and a half as the punch is a given). if your sole intention is to learn to defend yourself and hit back then you can skip the class and just go practice these. in fact, there is a form of wing chun that does teach loose techniques like this.

Combative or not combative?

well, challanging doesn't have to be about a fight... -
if someone pulled a gun on you

ok, just me adding my two bits. police train in firearms use yes? they shoot targets, a lot of targets. they do this stationary shooting at stationary targets. generally speaking, they are good at this right? but how accurate is their shooting? from what i gather, not very. often a few inches off the mark and in groups that range from 2" to 6" right? and this is at what, 20 feet? and these are guys that practice a lot. i don't think criminals spend much time at a firing range, which is why they tend to fire haphazardly, in bad posture, with bad aim... of course i am just making assumptions here. feel free to illustrate the holes in my argument. -

Combative or not combative?
Drunken Monkey replied to Icetuete's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yeah, but there's a difference between challanging and just going in there to beat the guy to the floor... -
hey guys, as some of you may know, i am traditionally trained in wing chun and as some of you may know, i will be the first to admit that it isn't invincible. to cut what could be a long story short, i am looking for a grappling art that you guys think would compliment what i already know. any comments, words of wisdom, directions would be much appreciated. thanks.

a lot of people complain about mcdojos but why doesn't anyone do something about it? in the old days, if a school was suspect then it was challanged, not for self gratification but to defend the ideal of martial arts. after all, it only takes one bad school to bring down the image of martial arts so how can we live with so many bad schools around us? -
well, being taught a martial art and being trained to kill are two very different things. i can teach you how to kill someone in about fifteen seconds but it will me a lifetime to teach you kung fu.
-
um, kinda missed the point of her being a first time buyer/driver and in uk...
-
oooh, a bit touchy today. c'mon, you must understand tht a lot of the posters here are teens who want to say in some round about way that their art is the best and that they can whip your butt even though they've only learnt from books/websites/videos. all we can do is tell them that there is more to martial arts than just copying the forms.
-
um, well, believe it or not, there are people whose job it is taste pet food... what i would like to know is, how do they know what our cats and dogs like to eat?
-
it doesn't matter what style you do as long as you take it seriously. train hard and you will do well in what ever you take part in.
-
are they both them big ol' american truck like things?

most complete fighting art
Drunken Monkey replied to sansoouser's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
um, but then most people would just say taht their art is the most complete. i personally believe that you should learn all that your own style has to offer, then IF you need (or want) to, go and learn the things you feel weren't covered from another art. -
i think it was a case of what he didn't do and by this i mean really prepare for the fight. i would've thought that you would train for the environment. it is well known that the ufc and the like is dominated by grappling arts. to expect your art, which has no history against grappling, to be effective is a bit half-brained. while i'm sure all the grapplers train with strikers in mind. like i almost said before, the wing chun guy just wasn't prepared for the shoot.
-
well, how good you get and how quickly it happens really does depend on how seriously you take your training. at the end of the day if you only turn up to one lesson a week and don't train outside of that single lesson then don't expect to get good in ANY style. i have seen people "practice" wing chun for years and still not have "good hands". but then i have also seen people who practice for two months who really can defend themselves.
