Submission Holds
G95champ replied to Ghost02's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Im sure you can search it and find many. Books and tapes don't hurt either but IMO you better just take your time and learn what your Sensei shows you because if done wrong you may hurt someone. -
UFC strikers and grapplers
G95champ replied to superfighter's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Kicks to the groin Kicks to the knee cap Throat punches Clawing techinques Again a one on one fight will always favor a grappler but TRUE strikes are limited in what Traditional arts teach. Thats why you don't see karate, TKD, Kung Fu, etc in the UFC. Thats all.... -
UFC strikers and grapplers

Gracie and his family is the best in the world at BJJ and ground fighting no question. However the early boxers and karate fighters were not. Roy Jones Jr., a young Chuck Norris, etc. Im just saying one on one in a cage will alway favor a grappler. -
UFC strikers and grapplers

Grapplers would still do better because most fights go to the ground. The only thing we would see is more people hurt if strikers were allowed to throw vital strikes. Only rule I would change is the kicking of a downed opponent. -
No way would I ever want to fight Tito, Frank, Tank, Kimo, Vetor, etc in real life. Im just saying that a true striker in the UFC is basically fighting with one arm tied behind his back. Same reason you don't see BJJ in TKD point fights or Heavyweight Boxing matches.

I agree with that.

most of us do karate has ground work in it suck kata as the tekki's have it hidden. a ture striker has no chance of winning a UFC event because of those rules. A good ex is this one. Lets say I punch you and you fall to one knee. Now my next move would be to kick you right in the head with a big power kick and KO you. However if you kick a downed opponet you are DQed. As to where a grappler could go on and take me down and finish it quick. Don't get me wrong I love the UFC just watched one the other night but they favor grapples. As they should because no one wants to see guys die this is American not Rome. LOL

Well advanced ranks are a bit differant.

Never let the other guys see you cry right KK75.

Yeap Sounds like a ture Shotokan school to me. LOL How have you been? Ive not read a lot form you of late.

Not a good question. Only because most of the karate strikes you would use in true SD that would drop a person include things like Tiger Strikes to the Throat, Elbows to the Face, Kicks to the Groin and while a man is down. The UFC has rules that stops such moves. Add to that remember they are using gloves for the most part now. There is no comparison between UFC and real fights.

Say your sorry and tell your mom I will take any punishment you got for me but please don't make me take that karate class. LOL. Good Luck
-
Not Shotokan. Most of our students are lucky to learn one kata every 3 or 4 months. We do a kata per belt which is pretty common. However we drill and drill and drill kata. Doing the moves is not learning it. Keep working BK.

As long as you stretch well before lifting it will not hurt you flexability. I lifed all in HS and could always do a split. So don't give weight training up just make sure you give the hamstrings a good stretch before working your legs.

Sorry dude I was and am a big fan of bloodsport however I don't care a lot for JCVD. LOL -
Selling moves helps too. Some will say it gives a false impression to people but what most don't understand is if that move was done at full speed and power it would have that effect. I always make sure to bring that point out when doing new techinques on people. Because beginners always want to play TUFF guy and not go along with moves and every now and then you have to show them that if you apply full force they will fall. LOL

Kata is the base of karate no question. However its loaded with application from the very basic to the wild and crazy. Yes there is a set of applications taught traditionally for any kata but any good karate teacher will tell you that you got to apply the kata to yourslef and through personal developement see applications for yourself that are not there. EX 10 things to do with a down block 1. Block a punch 2. Block a kick 3. Hammer strike to the stomach or groin 4. Back knuckle strike to the groin 5. Pushing a perosn hand off your shoulder 6. Escaping from a wrist grab 7. Pulling a person over you back as in a throw 8. Pulling a person arround you side as in a hip toss 9. Pushing something out of the way such as a chair 10. Taking a defensive stance. ETC ETC ETC Thats just what came to me qucikly and I show all those applications everytime I teach a kata for the first time. Your question was whats wrong with modren karate. The answer is not the techinques or the applications or the method of training. The BIG problem with modren karate is the LACK of QUALITY Teachers. You got people in just for the money who sell rank and you got others who don't know anything but are great tumblers and acrobats. TKD, Karate, BJJ, Kung Fu, MT, blah blah blah it don't matter if you learn from someone who is a good teacher you will learn Self Defense and become a good karate studnet....
