Judo a martial art?
G95champ replied to superfighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Although arts like Judo, TKD, have a sport label on them I don't think we can say they are no longer a MA. Their are 3 classes of MA IMO Combat Arts - arts that teach you to fight and spend very little time in tradition, kata, weapons, etc. Arts such as Boxing, MT, KM, Savate, Sambo, and BJJ to a lesser degree. Sport Arts - arts that have been taken into the olympics or other main stream fourm and people compete under certin rules. Such as TKD, Judo, Greco Roman Wrestiling, Sumo, Capporia, Fencing, and to some degree BJJ and Boxing however I think those 2 do fit combat arts better. Martial Arts - these are arts that many now call the traditional arts. They have a focus on a bit of everything from fighting to kata, from weapons to a moral code. These are called arts because the person doing them could take it into the Combat or Sport area with a little outside help. These arts are Karate, Kung Fu, Hapikido, TSD, Akkido, and JJ. That is just my breakdown. That don't make it right or wrong but I think you can say it makes pretty good sense. LOL. -
Im not a big fan of either kick. Both IMO leads to the person being kick, catching your kick way to often. Yeah they look nice. I spend my time on the spinning thrust or spinning back kick which is very powerfrul. Like they said above its hard get power out of the hook or heal because the hips are sort of locked out.

We give our white belts out when the student buys a gi. Our 10th and 9th Kuy are both white ranks but no test is given niether is a certificate. This time could pass in a few classes or a few months just depends. However once they have shown the ability to know the basics we start getting them ready for the Gold belt test which is test they must pay for ONLY if they pass....

What is the purpose of Martial Arts
G95champ replied to Hannibal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well I guess MA was developed as a means of unarmed SD. However MA quickly tied to Eastren religon like Buddahism and Shinto. Religon in general all teaches the same thing to be good. MA is not a religon but its moral code fits in nicely with what most teach. Be good, be respectful, only fight when the cause is just, help others, develope yourself though hard work and you will be rewarded later on. So to me MA is a means of social control. LOL. I prob. should not say social control but a means to teach morals and goodness to society. -
Your refering to 1,3, and 5 step sparring I think and yes their are certin traditional combos used that IMO need taught just because it is eaisy as a teach to watch the group and make sure everyone is doing the same thing. However you are free to play with and change them to fit yourself and better yourself. I see no problem in making changes here and there to give you and your students a better look.

Not to that degree but being a football coach we do a lot of weight training most of it is exp. training more so than power lifting but we do a bit of everyting.

Don't hurt each other.... -
I give a few handouts like a list of the kata, Bio on Funakoshi, some terms, nothing they really need to know at that point but something to keep them excited because you know how all new students are. They can't wait till the next class.

Its key. Watch good boxers they have great footwork thats why they jump so much rope. To be a good striker you got to avoid the shoot. One way you can do that is to never be in the same place counter step and strike. A person with quick feet in any sport or activety will do much better. Shifing, Stance, Balance, Cordination are key....

Lee had lots of street fights where people say he was about 50/50 but like we have said for a 128lbs guy in the 1960's thats not bad.

How long?
G95champ replied to quigley_321's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
In good you mean you can fight and understand the moves. Answer it it depends on you Athletic and Mental ability. -
I am a Nidan and have been told I can take people to Shodan but no more. I really think you have to be a Sandan to do that. However with all my Dan gradings I call in my Sensei to oversee the testing so Im giving it but he's sort of got veto power.

Are you talking about a choke or just a 2 hand grab. In either case their are a lot of things you can do. Rear chokes you must always tuck the chin and try and stop the choke first then you can worry about counter, throws, etc... With a grab most can be counterd by stepping back and swing you are like doing a back stroke in the swimming pool.

Yeah your right TJS we do light face contact. However we don't throw a lot of head strikes anyhow. I mean yeah we do but I generally teach punching to the body and arms. But yes your right we don't have heavy contact to the face. However just to counter point your point can you really train you face for contact?

Those guys who were in UFC one knew about ground work as well but the Gracies took it to a place none of them had any clue about. They are the only reason we are having this talk now. No one has had a bigger impace on MA since Chuck Norris in the eraly 80's and Lee before him.
-
I am not a fan of boxing gloves for that reason. I have all my guys buy the MMA gloves like you see in the UFC. They have padding but you can still grab and stuff so it really don't take away for the natural movement. Instep/shin guards are really the only other thing we wear. Some wear mouth pieces or cups but its up to you.

Both will do fine I would agree that KM may have a bit over MT because its focus on weapon defense. However both are quick and to the point.
