  1. she's not saying he's insane cuz he does that, she's saying that since he is insane, his advice to kick the bag like that may or may not be trusted.
  2. cardio kickboxing isn't all bad - serves it's purpose. I'm actually getting ready to start teaching a cardio kickboxing class. they gym approached me about it, then when I gave them a demo class, they said that the members would much more prefer a cardio kickboxing version. There's nothing wrong with it - not everyone trains MA for the purpose of fighting. I'm going to make sure they understand proper technique though. The last 15 mins of every class will be spent aerobically drilling proper form of the techniques and hitting the focus mitts.
  3. just keep doing what you are doing and keep plentyof jow handy.
  4. No. Killing bulls is not what made him great. he would have reached his status without it. As I said, killing bulls was pointless and ultimately proved nothing. no, it's fact. It's a fact that I will not be considered a great fighter because I killed bulls. I will be considered a great fighter because I am successful in fights. hypothetically, let's say one of the bulls killed oyama. After hearing about his skill, reading accounts of how he won countless fights, would he then be considered a low skill level fighter because he lost to the bull? why or why not?
  5. ng mui was the nun we referred to earlier...
  6. There are other strong people and fighters in the world, some of whom you have just mentioned and believe that could kill a bull. Wether they would fight a bull bear handed has to be seen to be believed. It would take power and agility to defeat a bull. fighting a bull is completely different than fighting a man, which is part of the reason Why I said that killing a bull does not make him a great fighter. As for the guys I named, chances are that you will never see them try to kill a bull. Why? because it is completely pointless, as it proves nothing...
  7. there may be an MA shop in your town - there is one in mine. I didn't list all the books I own, as that wasn't the topic - but aefbird has me beat regardless. If you don't have an ma store in your city, check online. I've gotten some great stuff on ebay and amazon.
  8. the more mass a person has than you, the harder time you will have dropping him - this is why there are weight classes in organized fights. Matter of factly, the guy I mention above, whom I kicked in the head in my last fight, outweighed me by like 80 lbs. consequently, it was extremely hard to drop him.
  9. you are missing the point entirely. I can take any olympic lifter and teach him to punch and he could kill a bull. But can he fight? not necessarily. It only means that he has the power to kill a bull. Matadors danced around bulls all the time. Were they also known to be great fighters? these are skills that CAN be used in fighting, yes. However, posessing them does not guarantee that you are a good fighter.
  10. courage alone isn't enough. If you show me someone that's all courage and no skill, I can show you someone eager to get his butt kicked. Now, look what you said next - "...has the SKILL to avoid..." Now, we are talking about skill - use of the attributes. Like I said, the attributes alone don't necessarily mean anything, and you just proved that point. so am I... MA = martial artist in this instance, not martial art. And once again, a bull does not attack in the manner of a man. that's like dodging kicks in order to improve your ability to dodge punches. I'm sure cro cop and many of the other pro fighters today could kill a bull. I have no doubt that tyson could - but that is not what made him a great fighter.
  11. maybe the karate fighter was just the better fighterNo doubt he was. but since WC is supposedly so effective, then he really should've done better, which was my point.
  12. the fact that karate came from kung fu is actually irrelevant. it came from it HUNDREDS of years ago, and changed not only from chinese to okinawan, but from okinawan to japanese. They are really far separated from eachother. Consequently, it's effectiveness (or lack thereof) has no bearing whatsoever on kung fu. Some will argue that thai boxing came from kung fu as well, and you know you really can't compare those two...
  13. you're absolutely correct... they could. If you understand your styles principles, you can adapt it's techniques. The question there is why don't the do that... and elbows_and_knees like I said its no secret they can handle themselves on the ground I know how long they have both been grappling I'm not talking about handling themselves on the ground though. I'm saying his striking is so effective because he's such a good grappler. His takedown defense is what gives him his ability to remain standing.
  14. footwork. it is fast, effective footwork that will get you inside.
  15. dude, there are like 234498234 different stories. In the one I am talking about, her father was a monk. Here's something I just found which states the same: The girl Yim Wing Tsun was born in Kwantung province and lived, since the death of her mother, alone with her father, Yim Lee, a student of the Shaolin monastery. http://www.wingtsun.com.au/site/AboutWT/History/wingtsunaustrali.html However, this story states that she was taught by ng mui, which is most common.
  16. the capoeira instructor in our building also holds a bb in tang soo do. He's very good. my experiences with WC havaen't been as good. I've had few problems with the WC guys I've sparred, and have seen a WC sifu get torn a new one by a karate bb in a continuous sparring event.
  17. that canoe experience was nasty...
  18. that tells me that when you spar, you should focus on using your footwork and combinations to get you into punching range. you will never be able to get close to them if you don't practice it...
  19. maybe he did. According to this article from some tripod fan site http://members.tripod.com/beyondthereef__1/tigerman.html and this one from wallace's own site: http://www.superfoot.com/aboutbill.htm he and elvis were friends, and he attended college herein memphis. However, the bio does not mention rhee at all. It says that he started training karate in 1967 in indiana after having his right leg injured while training in judo. since he lived in memphis, it's possible that he trained at rhee's for the length of time he was here.
  20. kang rhee is decent, but he's not known for producing fighters. His strong point is forms. They are awesome with kata. FWIW, he DID train elvis, but he wasn't his only teacher. May have been his main one, though. I dunno about him training wallace. I've heard that said, but I'm not sure how much influence he actually had over his training...In other words, he may have trained with wallace while he was in town visiting once or something - I'm not sure. In any event, let me know how it goes.
  21. he sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Perhaps there is a method to the insane man's madness...
  22. your context is irrelevant. They are attributes. Attributes do not make fighting skill. Period. We've all seen MA with superior attributes get mauled by "street fighters"... Why does this happen? Because his attributes were not enough...
  23. That applies to MT as well. There really is no superior style, only superior training methods, and thai boxing has that won hands down.
  24. um.... wing chun was created so that a woman could defeat a man that was harassing her. her father was a monk and created the system from his knowledge of shaolin arts. Also, the strikes you mentioned aren't necessarily more harsh BUT they are harder to pull off because the target areas are smaller, making them much harder to use against a resisting opponent.
  25. Nah. It's because the training methods they used sucked for what they were trying to do. Eye gouges were actually allowable in the early UFC matches. If you used one, you would get fined, but if your opponent couldn't continue, you still won the fight. That said, there are a few kung fu guys competing. There is a taiji school in canada that competes in local mma and does well. There is also a WC school in australia that has been doing well locally. Sami berik competes mma as well. there are a few out there, not many. The few that do realize that they have to train properly for their event - they can't just step up and win.
