  1. For most people, it just wears down because of training. I've had mine for about 7 years now, and it's still in pretty good condition... shows I don't train enough! There have however been cases of people deliberately wearing them down, but that's quite a lame excersize really.
  2. Nope, sorry Toby, I don't know anyone in that area. If you happen to drop into adelaide though, drop into a class and introduce yourself! Feel free to have a train with us too! https://www.aacd.info
  3. It really depends what you are after. Most of the long range standup systems are really good for this. Eg. Karate, Tang So Do, TKD etc.
  4. After always wanting one, but never getting around to buying one, last night I got impulsive and decided to make a wall mounted Makiwara myself. It took me about half hour (maybe a bit more) and cost me nothing (had the materials lying around the shed). Works really well!
  5. sounds like a pretty good workout for me. As an extra, see about sourcing a large rubber strap (elasticated). Tie a loop at one end and attach the other to a wall. Face away from the wall, put your hand on your hip then walk forward till there is a bit of tension, then throw out punches. You can also do this with legs by wrapping the loop around your foot/ankle
  6. Concentrate on your career first. If you then have spend time doing the thing that you currently enjoy most (regardless of how much you have always wanted it)
  7. Hi There, As most Kenpo/Kempo practitioners would know, Grandmaster Ed Parker created a diagram he called the Universal Diagram. This was used to depict movements and targets for combat. I have always been facinated by this diagram, but would like to know more. What can you tell me about it?
  8. That's actually quite a good measure, but the way I was given it is... If you can talk fluently, you are not working hard enough If you have large breaks between your words, you are working too hard.
  9. I train down the beach, but only once a year. I think if you wash it thoroughly in fresh water afterwards, it should be fine.
  10. My understanding is that Bob Sullivan had trained a little in Shotokan and a little in Goju-Ryu and decded to create his own style. Hence the name Go(Goju) Kan(Shotokan) Ryu(Goju)
  11. The mind and body are two different things, but they are interlated and interdependant. As mentioned, we all know of cases where the mind can affect the body, but the body often affects the mind too. For instance, in the case you mentioned, the body releases endorphines. This is a chemical that has the effect of making us feel happy as well as other things. Probably a more specific example would be pain compliance techniques... eg. Locks. By inducing pain into the body, some parts of the mind will actually shut down momentarily. The body goes into preservation mode and only looks at realeiving pain. This is what allows us to put a lock on someone that has a free arm and still not worry about them hitting us.

    Wow, what a fantastic read!
  13. Very Well Said! I think sometimes people forget this, so a reminder is nice!
  14. ??? Please Explain Further.
  15. Is it me, or does the whole lineage thing seem to be kind of Shotokan specific. I mean most systems are like, oh yeah we're from that guy, but with Shotokan karateka they are like, well I am a 6th generation student twice removed directly under Funakoshi. LOL Lineage is important, but it seems like it's overstressed in Shotokan. John Althogh I'm a Shotokan Practioner myself, I have to agree. I even found myself (albiet, some years ago) taking pride in the fact that I'm in a tree with only 2 instructor between myself and Funakoshi, but in the real scheme of things, I don't think that means much. Afterall, just cos my instructor was close to Funakoshi's Karate does not make him a good instructor. I haven't seen anyone from other Martial Arts really go on about it either.
  16. I'm not one to worry about when I'm gonna grade next, by that I mean, I don't want to just get as many grades as quick as possible. I don't think that the grade makes the person, I think the grade is simply recognition for achievements already made. While I don't hunt for grades, I am proud of what I have achieved. That is not to say that I like the colour of my belt, but that what it signifies is what I am proud of.
  17. As a former bouncer (crowd controller) I received my fare share of verbal insults. There are basically three things you can do: Ignore It This is usually the best thing to start with. In many instances, this can put the other person off because they are not getting the offended reaction they were after. Be aware though, this can also make some people more determined. Laugh with them Agreeing with someone when they are insulting you is one of the best ways to throw them off balance. Especially if you are witty enough to include them in the insult. Once again though, this can be seen as a weakness and be harped upon by someone determined to annoy you. Alternatively, you can turn the insult into a positive (eg. they say "You're fat", you say "Thanks, I'm really in shape... round is a shape") Throw it back. When sending an insult back, it's important that you make it relevant. Don't just spit a random insult. (eg. He says "you're fat", you say "your broke"). What you need to do is find a way of throwing their insult back on them. (eg. They say "You're fat", you say "yeah, but you're ugly and I can go on a diet") To aggrovate them just that little bit more, blow them a kiss afterwards... This method is the most fun, but can also provoke the most violence.
  18. Couldn't have said it better myself... so I won't... Do Well!
  19. Congratulations!! I hope it renews your motivation for the next grade.
  20. Generally in our school, the lower grades will tend to grade every 3 months. As they move along, the grades get further and further apart. It will be 4 years by the time I go for my next grade. (since my last grading)
  21. Completely agree. If they are concerned about your technical ability/knowledge, they should have paid more attention the first time. If they are concerned about your personality, they should have paid more attention during your years of training. Is there a valid reason for this that I seem to be missing?
  22. can you remember any further details?
  23. He was also in shootfighters and a movie with Richard Norton (can't remember the title) as well as a whole heap of other movies. Would love to meet the man!
  24. Meanwhile, back on topic..... I think that the fight was quite true to realism. Rarely do they show the fighters in movies being tired or doing basic moves.
