I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks it looks a little phony. I mean geez, 14th Dan, that's a bit rich. Considering there is 9 Kyu grades, that's 23 gradings all up. That just seems a bit much to me.

Hi Guys, Just thought I would let you know, after much research, I ended up settling on Martial Arts Organizer. So far it seems to be the best value for money product on the market. (not the best, but the best was very expensive) https://www.martialartsorganizer.com If anyone wants help selecting a product, I've already looked around, so drop me a PM and I'll help.

Next time someone dis-respects your school, say "oh, ok, so you've only had a real quick look at it. There's a lot more to it. Come by and have a go" then hand them a business card.

Quesiton about a certain style....
Jiffy replied to BLOWN's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Guro Dan Inosanto was the heir to Bruce Lee's school when he died and still teaches JKD at the Inosanto Martial Arts Accademy. Have a look at his website... http://www.inosanto.com/ I just went to have a look then, it seems to be down, but keep an eye on it, I'm sure it will be back up soon. It has a page on there somewhere with a list of people that are affiliated to his school. I would assume these teach JKD. -
Have a look at this advert from our local Yellow Pages... http://www.yellowpages.com.au/displayads/256/478787158_Y5518256_S00Y_26_1UD_02_120.gif Now, I don't know a whole lot about Ninjutsu, but if you have a look at the grade, doesn't 14th Dan sound a little excessive? I know "Masters" that have been training for 50 years (or more) and are 8th Dan's. How long does one have to train to be a 14th Dan? What are your thoughts on this? Is it justified, or just a case of giving away grades? Have you come across a similar scenario?

That's just an advertising method, has nothing to do with their standard. In fact, GKR has probably the marketing of any school in the world. So for this reason, I think if you are looking at ways to improve your school size, GKR is a role model. As to the standard of their teaching, that's a different matter all together, and really does depend on the individual dojo.

There is an excersize called a hip abduction that will fix this. The cheapest way to get this is to get some form of stong elastic (eg a heavy rubber strap). Sit on the floor and seperate your legs till they are 75% of your full stretch apart. Attach the band to each ankle. Lay back and seperate your legs as far as you can against the resistance of the band. Do it over and over and over. A couple of other ways of achieving the same thing. Do your kicks slowly, over and over. Lay on one side. With an ankle weight on, raise the straight leg. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat.

Beating the Reach
Jiffy replied to marie curie's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
As long as their attack is travelling in a straight line, move to the outside. It then doesn't matter how long they're legs are. Move to the outside and block with either arm. -
PASSED RANK TEST

Congratulations! Well Done! PS - Take the caps off (it means your shouting) -
CONGRATULATIONS! Welcome to the wonderful world of BJJ! I love it myself! You will get used to the other bits and pieces, don't worry about it. BO and bad breath are also an interesting obstacle, you get used to it. In regards to effectiveness, trust me... BJJ works!!! For proof, get a hold of just about any UFC video. It's just that sometimes, the "traditional" techniques in the syllabus are designed to work with a gi. That doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of others or that they can't be modified to work without one. Stick with it! It's awesome!

Hi There, Yes, acceptance. Sometimes we loose focus and I myself am really bad for this. The key for me (not for everyone) is not preventing because I find this impossible, but to learn to recognize and correct it. Often we don't know we are drifting off to fairly land until we have been there for some time. Practise is the only way to learn to recognise this quickly. What you can immediately do though is the remedy. I find consiously talking to yourself (silently) and reminding yourself what it is you really want to achieve long term is the best way to get back to the task at hand. Also, sometimes we loose focus because we are trying to concentrate on too many things. Narrow it down to just a small element of your training (eg. footwork) and just work on that for a while till you get your focus back.

"Full Contact"
Jiffy replied to Spirit At Choice's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
This is a bit of a sore spot for me because i believe way too many people mis-use the term "full contact". Quite often people use this when in fact what they are doing is "heavy contact". Full contact to me means no holding back (eg. UFC) and is therefore very rarely practised because it's hard to keep students training when they have broken bones etc. When most people say they do Full Contact, they usually are doing Heavy Contact. -
Yes we use them. send me an email (jiffbox@hotmail.com) and I will reply with a copy. What is your reason for asking?

Unfotunately, not everyone has the ideal respect of a martial artist. Over time, you just get used to it. Invariably the outcome is the same, they either don't stick it, or their attitude changes. (in our school) people with attitude problems don't make it to black.

I can second that one! I do three finger pushup faily regularly and thumb/single-finger pushups whenever I can, but it's always my mind that gives out before my fingers.

Remembering Techniques!
Jiffy replied to Taipeu's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
One of the beauties of Shotokan is that it can be practised alone. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all arts. While you can do some things, you are very limited. Find someone to practise with. -
Two art dilema .....
Jiffy replied to karatekid1975's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
There's nothing wrong with your opinions in the MA changing as the years roll by.... mine did! Go with the flow, or in the words of Sifu Bruce "Be like water". I would definately say to continue with TKD, but if you feel that you want to do more JJ and back off on the TKD, do so. Don't feel guilty about it! -
I think that it is the best solutions. As humans we often try to quantify or explain that which we do not understand. Best to leave it until we do.

Recognizing Black Belts of other styles in dojo.
Jiffy replied to jaymac's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Very well said. In my school, if you have trained in another style... bad luck. You are not in the style we are working in, and even if you are, unless you train with a recognised school (part of WUKO) we will assess you and give you the grade we believe they are worthy of. If they don't like it, they are welcome to back to their previous school. I don't see why people want to wear their black in another art. I cross train a fair bit and enjoy starting at white in a new style. IMO anyone wanting to wear their black in another style is doing it for reasons of ego only. It's got nothing to do with respect, if they want respect for their achievements, go and continue training in the style in which they recieved their black. -
How many black belts have you made?
