  1. Hey There, Welcome to KF! The three styles are very similar. They are all part what is classed by WUKO (World Union of Karate Organisations) as the four traditional styles (the ohter one is Shotokan). In the scheme of things, the difference between the styles is not going to be huge, but the way it is taught may be. Really, comes down more the the individual school than the style. Personally I would say I like Goju, but that's probably because I don't know a whole lot about the other styles. Visit the instructors, and see which one appeals to you. Go from there.

    Testing

to a large degree, we grade our students because that's the way it's always been done in our lineage. However, while I do see some disadvantages to it, there are some advantages to it. Firstly, it provides the student a sense of achievement and therefore motivation (particularly with kids) Secondly, it allows for a structure of teaching in order to ensure fairness and equality. In this way, it ensures all the T's are crossed and the I's are dotted. Thirdly, it provides an easy method of identification. While it's true that instructors see their students each class, a belt system helps to remind the instructor where each person is at. As well as this, it instantly indicates to the lower grade students who they can go and speak to for help (eg. Brown/Black Belt).
  3. Sounds like a good find. The kodokan is one of the oldest Martial Arts schools in the world. At the time of the creation of my main style (shotokan) it was one of only two such organisations in Japan. I think you will love it.
  4. Perhaps some further information. Maybe start off with what your thoughts on the subject. Yes I too believe there is a difference, but it depends what context you are talking about.
  5. At the end of the day, you need to make a choice for yourself, but if you can do it with the respectful blessing of your instructor, that would be better.
  6. Yes, unfortunately, very true.
  7. shukokai2000, what you say is true. The martial arts does suffer from this lack of instinctive corrective reaction. While I understand what they were trying to portray in the movie, I think it was less than effective and came across more as an anti-martial art video rather than what their actual intentions were.
  8. Patsui, what a great post. I agree with you entirely! What a sad degredation of the Martial Arts when the focus is status, not knowledge.
  9. Here in Oz, we have a system much like the UK system, called "medicare". Essentially, most things are covered by the government or at least partially covered. Some medications are also subsidised. The exceptions would be things like elective surgery and stuff, or if you want to go to a private hospital. Also, optical and dental are not covered. People do have private cover because they get better service, can avoid the ques and also get more cover, but if you don't have it, it doesn't really matter.
  10. My 2c is really quite simple... Common sence and reason has completely gone out the window. Because of a few that do the wrong thing, the many must pay. As ps1 said, the problem is, once it's in writing, you have no legal standpoint. There is no such thing as discretion any more. So what's my view? Well, quite simply, it's pathetic and counter productive, and is only a good thing for the few people who can't use common sence, but it is a growing part of every day life, so it's best to just get used to it.
  11. You'll get the hang of it. If you have a look through the list I posted, you'll start to see things that are generic that you can remember.. eg. Mawashi = Roundhouse Geri = Kick Empi = Elbow strike.... Tsuki = Punch Then you can put them together... Mawashi Geri = Roundhouse Kick Mawashi Empi = Roundhouse Elbow Strike Mawashi Tsuki = Roundhouse Punch etc etc

    seiza

I personally have had no issues with this (I started at 6), but some of my students do.
  13. fair enough. not me personally. I have great difficulty learning something unless I see a practical use for it.... who knows, maybe I'm just boring.
  14. Only while your learning. Once you become proficient, do them both as quickly as you can. No point leaving your leg out there for them to grab before you get a chance to punch them in the face.

  16. Apparently, you seek that kind of training...
  17. It sounds to me that you mean. From a same side wrist grab (in this instance, the grab your left wrist with their right hand)... Swing your left into the centre to put them off. Then swing it to the right and continue in a circular clockwise motion. Continue the circle till their elbow is pointing up. From here, one of the easiest armbars, keep hold of their wrist, hyperflex thier elbow by pressing down on it with your elbow or tricep.
  18. Oh cool, I didn't know it had a name.
  19. I got bored and didn't up watching that far.
  20. I'm with Patrick on this one. You handled it well, so it's time to move on. There will always be people that want to believe they are the best. Let them. As long as you know the truth, why do you have to prove it to them??
  21. I'm with Myth on this one. I think you should at least advise your instructor what you are doing, even if you are not asking permission. It is something that is of interest to them, and not disclosing as such is being a tad on the dishonest side.
  22. If you really want to annoy someone who is being nasty, be really nice to them...
  23. I have a very simple solution for that, and it solves the problem every time. "Sorry you don't like my classes, the door is over there..." (Essentially that's it, but a slightly longer, more polite version.... usually)
  24. Hmmm, not bad. Question, what is the practical application for the technique?
