  1. the funniest thing to here is when someone mumbles a kiah, definently dont wanna mumble that kiah during a test, if it sounds like your afraid of your own voice whos gonna be intimidated??
  2. wow thanks white warlock i greatly appreciate the time you put into that response and it definently helped me alot, i love the idea of traditional wing chun but i had a feeling this wasnt that, thanks alot for doing some fact checking for me, and yes hapkido would be a good compliment to my taekwondo training so aslong as the price isnt overwhelming in the other school, which it might be as the instructor has dodged answering that question in 2 emails he sent, and aslong as nobody can come in here and prove WW wrong, that seems to be the better solution, thankyou to both i think i'll call right now about those rates
  3. at the end of august i am moving to kelowna bc and i have narrowed my school search down to 2 and i would very much like some input from other people First a wing chun school: http://www.kungfuacademy.ca/site/view/Home.pml i have been crazy about kung fu since i took a lil bit when i was about 10 (unfortunately i had to stop due to financial reasons, i recently looked in the phone book for my old instructor but couldnt find his name), plus from what ive read on this forum it seems simialar to my old style and very interesting, but from the website the school doesnt seem to stress the tradition as much as i would like voicing it as an excercise more then an art(which i lament),and it seems rather commercial, but it seems to have a good schedule, the site does not list the rates though so i wont know that till i get them on the phone Second a Taekwon do/Hapkido school: http://members.shaw.ca/rjsproductions/home_11.htm I am currently taking taekwon do and am very interested in hapkido, and with my college program being 4 months on 4 months off assuming i can find work here well im off i'll be here in nelson and unless i find that elusive kung fu class i used to be in taekwondo is the only available martial art, so goin to this school i would be able to keep my taekwondo training goin seemlessly(although they are different styles), plus this school seems to be more traditional, with a more disciplined environment(from what ive read) this school also has a good schedule , but it also doesnt list its rates and i havent been able to get a hold of them on the phone yet(as for some reason i hate leaving machine messages, so detached) Both of these i would presumably be able to attend the same amount of hours a week, unless i were to take private lessons , one school i get to continue learning my current art well learning an art im interested in, the other i get to return to my roots in an art that the way i was taughtin was incredible but i had an awesome teacher and i know non of these instructors, i just so want to be doing kung fu, but i probably would have to be jumping between taekwon do and wing chun for the next 2 years(which might not be that bad actually now that i think about it), but im also really interested in hapkido and do want to continue my progress in tkd, i'll begin to get clearer on the subject once ive gotten on the phone with both schools, im also planning on speaking with my current instructor, and my dad(a martial arts guy with hapkido experience) and i plan to take free classes at both schools hopefully my dad can come with me, But till then i am desperate for insight as i am seesawing back and forth here i love the high flying kicks and with long legs im good at them and i am interested in grappling, but i am also immensly interested in the center line, balance and all the other theories of wing chun, This is a massive post and anybody who took this time to read and respond is worthy of much respect and admiration. THANKYOU for letting me spill my head out
  4. congratualations, i have to wait till thursday i think before i know for sure, but im confident, did he show you the grading sheet or are we talkin ninja action here? lol
  5. goodluck to you then feel free to post in this thread how it went, and thankyou to both of you
  6. not a bad convo thanks for the replies, party on wayne, its karate world, karate world, party time excellent!!
  7. got to test last night, i wasnt even planning on testing i was just doing jump kicks with the rest of the class and my intructor approached me about it so i thought i might aswell, i was worried cause i didnt know all of the terminology or stance/stance names by heart yet but he was rather leanient towards me and the other white belt, at first i thought he was too leanient, i mean i want to really earn my belts but when he tested the higher ranks he was progressively harder on them, like the blue belts and red stripes had to mix different forms on command and repeat the advanced forms over and over, so that alleviated my fear that the school was too slack a bit, though i will still be slightly dissapointed if the other white belt goes straight to yellow belt, i dont want to seem judgmentel but he knew very little out of the very little we were expected to know. But thats not important im just feeling good about the whole thing, the incouragment ive been getting lately is extrememly satisfying anyways sorry for babbling just thought i'd share
  8. no i was just wondering where people would set there limits, i think its a pretty important thing for people to know about themselves, but i do appreciate the advice, thankyou
  9. how many people would you ever consider fighting at once if you did have the option of running, and i realize lots of people will say "i would take the run option no matter what to aviod confrontation" but what if this isnt the first time youve been confronted by this person(these people) perhaps this is a constant thing, youve managed to find your way out of this situation before but you just want to end it once and for all, assuming these are the kind of people who learn there lesson(for arguments sake), and assuming there about your size with little to no martial arts training, i know thats a lot of assumptions but humour me, and remember this running option isnt a sure thing they are willing to persue, so how many? personally i would only fight one guy at my present skill level, but i know they're are some very skilled people here. EDIT: just for extra conversation what if there was someone with you who may be at risk (gf ,friend)
  10. because he wants too.........he never asked for better styles he wanted to know if and how he could make his style work, thats what i told him
  11. i disagree i think that if it is a well rounded kungfu style (i wouldnt know) and your training it full contact hardcore and your intructors are working with you on grappling then you dont have to seek out a bjj coach or anything like that, train hard do your homework and you could stand a chance, becoming a champion on the other hand im not so sure
  12. the "thai boxer" just turtled up and dropped, definently not in the repetoire of any "real" fighter, but jacks only done it for a few weeks so ofcourse noone would put him against a top fighter, if he keeps training i'd like to see him fghting a year from now against better trained adversaries
  13. well i'd have to say all the other major film martial artists (jet lee, jackey chan, chuck norris,) played a role in popularising the martial arts but they also hurt it a bit by building kids images up to where when they do start martial arts there bound to be dissapointed when they find out its gonna be a long time before they'll be flying thro the air like super heros(if ever depending on the style), plus they never really added anything to there arts, so you really just gotta give it up to the traditional masters all over the world who keep there art pure IMHO
  14. i said kicks.............ive got really long legs so a turning kick to my opponents leg is quite easy and nearly no risk, not a fight ender though lol, when i get more into sparring i'll get to experiment
  15. congratulations, good job
  16. does anybody know a site that has taekwondo/hapkido tournament listings for Canada..........and yes i have googled and didnt find much
  17. how many pushups and situps do you do?
  18. actually kiba no chi i believe yours is 7.06............i win LOL j/p
  19. i dont know it says he's a certified examiner but i dont know if that counts for dans........and i do think you can do a free week, but i havent found any other hapkido schools in the area so this looks like it for right now
  20. ya the testimonial mentioned who trained him to first dan but not second i dont think,....even if it did i wouldnt recognise any names..........but ya im thinking that i might be able to get my dad to come with me when i first go down there.......he's pretty well trained in karate and hapkido (dont know what level he reached in hapkido tho) but i wont be able to do that for a while probably
  21. this is the first testimonial by Johnson Kong there are 2 others but i dont think there from martial artists http://members.shaw.ca/rjsproductions/tested_01.htm
  22. ya i thought it was wierd he hadnt achieved dan status after 8 years of hapkido but he's still certified by the WHA (world hapkido association) people om his board of directors are Mr. R. Lambie, 1st Vice-President Mr. J. Skipper, 2nd Vice-President Mrs. L. Smith, 3rd Vice-President/Secretary Mrs. K. Cross, 4th Vice-President Mrs. C. Brown, 5th Vice-President Mr. R.J. Smith, President the only 2 assistant intructors he names on the site are 2 1st dans but he does have 3 testimonials.....one by Johnson Kong (i think thats his name) 5th dan and his letter mentions a few other high ranked people to do with them....... but im still wary that there doesnt seem to be much experience in the main instructors the school has been open for a long time though so im confused why he would stay at 2nd dan for so long
  23. man every thread that mentions tkd turns into an argument about the sporty side vs the traditional side...........from now on why cant everyone just assume that when the threads talking about self defense we're talking traditional tkd (unless specified) and vice versa.........then all this can stop because yes traditional tkd is useful in reality and yes sport tkd does win tourneys.......
  24. well in a previous thread i asked about cross training and was incouraged that cross training taekwon do and hapkido would be a good idea, So i did a search and luckily enough found a school where im moving that teaches both seperately in a very traditional manner (which i prefer). the thing is that the head intructor is only a second degree black belt in taekwon do which seems a lil low to me(as my current teacher is getting his 4th soon). he also has a 1st gup in hapkido(i dont know how high that is). Secondly when i emailed him and asked him a couple questions one of which was about the fees (which are suspiciously missing from the site) he seemed to dodge the question, though he did seem very nice. But he is certified by the GTF ITF and WHA which seems like a good thing, he also has a few letters of commendation from some seemingly high level people........but something seems off about it to me still could somebody check out the site for me and give me their "keen" oppinions? http://members.shaw.ca/rjsproductions/home_11.htm sorry for the length but help would be well appreciated[/url]
  25. i visualize a pulsating glow where ever i want to concentrate my chi (sorta orange) and i visualize waves of this glow traveling from all over my body to that one spot......but i aint a pro at this or anything just played with it a bit
