I've been training for a year and a half now, and Ive had aching muscles ever since... hehe. Course, as has been said, it's much worse in the beginning. You'll adapt, and the soreness will turn into nothing more then chronic aching... heheh. Welcome to MA training

List of positive attributes

The ability to beat on my girlfriend legally to solve domestic disputes. Kidding! She usally beats on me anyways... heheh -
Diego wiped the floor with the other middleweights. I would have liked to see him match up against Chris L. That woulda been a more colourful fight and I wish that's what the finals were. I don't think you can say a thing about Florian either. I gaurentee he'd wipe the floor with anyone of this board... I think it came down to nerves and experiance. The guy knows how to fight... but he looked like a deer caught in the headlights... and Diego took advantage. As for the Forrest fight... damn.... that was the greatest thing I've ever seen... and those guys are funny as heck. The interviews were great too... like when Forrest said: "I'm gonna get punched in the mouth then figure out what to do." I got the episode taped... think it's gonna be in my VCR for the rest of the week.... I still think the match should been rules the other way... I think Bonner was a bit more skilled and landed more shots... but yeah... they defiantly deserved contracts... The Shamrock fight was a disappointment.... it coulda been great... Ken's tough as hell... but he slipped and that was it.... it happens....

Just once... by a buddy of mine who started TKD the same time I did, but dropped out after a month.... he just wanted to see how high I could kick... (previous to this I couldn't brink my leg aove my waist.. heh)...and a spinning hook kick... I did both... one kick at his head and 2 or three spinning hooks (without falling on my rear!) ...and told him he shoulda kept coming to class He agreed...
-
Watching that clip again, he's just waiting for that spinning hook kick. The winner must have picked up something the guy that got knocked out does before each back leg turning kick. If you watch, the winner bends his knees and gets ready to spring that spinning hook kick about a second before the loser tosses that kick out. He was teeing him up... Man I wish I had timing like that... heheh...

All-belts classes, anyone?
Slydermv replied to taekwondomom's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We have 6 PM family classes which are mixed, and 7 pm adult classes which are mixed. I do enjoy classes with kids on ocassion cause they are fun, but I prefer sticking to the adult classes... a much better workout... and much more challenging Classes aren't really split up by belt level, but for the most part... the more serious adults come to 7 PM while the "family" adults go to 6. Even though we have white to black in our classes, people are really encourganing and for the most part, we try to reassure people that they don't suck if they are falling behind... they haven't had as much training as these other guys. -
For my most recent test, (just this saturday for my brown belt or 4th gup) I had to do a spinning hook kick. My first break was a front kick.... The last demo my school did, I did a power back kick to break 3 boards... and for the next demo I'm working on a combination which would take me across a room... three consecutive back kicks, followed by a tornado kick fake into a spinning hook kick... The back kicks I have alright, but that last bit of spinning and faking a need work on. Our next demo isn't til july though so hopefully I'll get it right

That's a sweet story... and what a bunch of morons... I hope they got pounded...

Man... I remember that feeling... And congrats... sounds like you have a really positive attitude.... keep it up!

Ever hear of the Olympics? Olympic style TKD allows no head punches... I've never seen a body punch either... but they are allowed from what I understand....
-
*drools seeing the clip* Man that's nice.... And I agree... TKD will be with a few rule changes allowing more points for higher level techniques... It's a little too much of this front leg turning kick staying safe garbage at the moment... but that spin hook was nicccceeee....! And people say TKD is ineffective... Tell that to those olympic guys... heheh...

I wish I never read this topic... I have coffee before every class and one every morning... Thanks for ruining my last vice.....

Doctorate in Martial Arts Philosophy
Slydermv replied to dtstiachi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That's prolly the case, the studying of many different MA philosophies... but usually at a doctorate level, you specialize in one thing in particular. I doubt they teach one phil. as right or wrong... school isn't like that. They teach you everything, give their opinions and let you weed out what you agree with and what you don't... especially in psyc. and philosophy... (couse alot of people with degrees in either of these spend their time asking if you'd like frys with that...) -
It depends on what you're doing. Any time that you go all out, you need to take a day off. If weightlifting and you max out your bench press (i.e. lift your max weight until you're done) you need to take a day off, maybe two, for recovery. Your muscles need to rebuild themselves. But if you're running, you can train every day. If you're working on a bag or makiwara, you can train every day. If you're practicing kata, you can train every day. Even if you're working light weights, you can train every day! And even if you're a part-timer who trains 2 - 3 times per week, you SHOULD stretch every day. At the very least, give yourself that 15 - 20 minutes for a good stretching. So, for maximum advancement, train every day. I think a diverse regimen gains you much more. Stretching + running + kata + bag/makiwara + weights = great workout. Thanks... that makes sence and clears a few things up for me...

Any sparring advice for a small woman?
Slydermv replied to taekwondomom's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I wouldn't worry about the moving back too much... I'm 5'9" tall 190 pound man, and I tend to move back and counter rather then attack... I'm slowly starting to develop some attacking techniques as well though to become more balanced just now (and I've been training for about a year and a half now). Since you move back and are comfortable with it, develop techniques that work with moving back (i.e a back step followed by a back kick to advancing and bigger opponent can often work...) You have alot of time to develop more aggresion. Work with what you got now, what you feel comfortable with and expand it as time passes... -
I see alot of this training everyday stuff, but isn't that incorrect? I'm not an expert or anything, but don't your muscles and body need a day or two off on occassion to heal?

Staff Article: The Truth About Ki

Cool read! I'd still have to see it to believe it though... I was born a sceptic... -
I'm 24 and I quit smoking New Years day of this year.... (it's been about 4 months now...) Last year I think I tried to quit about 8 or 9 seperate times, cold turkey, the patch helped me for a 2 month stint but I started again... and various other methods... some of which only lasted 2 or 3 days... This time I used the patch for about 2 weeks to get me over that first little while where you lose your mind.... and I haven't had a smoke since.... The reason for my success.... 1. I kept myself out of situations for a good few months (until I was ready)... where I knew I smoked alot (i.e. no more drinking with the boys for a while, cut back on the coffee...). Now I go out for a few beers and forget about the smoking after a couple of drinks.... 2. I didn't underestimate the addiction. Just because I had a good day... I didn't think I was over the habit... it had been my downfall before.... I still get nic fits now... but they are infrequent and much more managable, going away after 30 seconds or so... but I know it's a continuing struggle 3. I used my martial arts to replace smoking in a sence. I took a positive thing and a natural high to replace the chemical one.... 4. The most importiant I think. I didn't quit quitting. My biggest motivation this time was the thought "screw having another smoke... I don't wanna go through this crap all over again..." cause that first little while is the hardest... and that seemed to keep me from going to the store and buying a pack when I really wanted a puff... You really have to want to quit. In your head you have to be ready or you'll break... Maybe different things will work for you... but remember... you'll only quit if you want to... you have to be strong when that addiction comes knocking... and don't quit quitting no matter how many times you fail... Man I could use a smoke right now... but... that would be stupid... I don't smoke.... Good Luck!

How long did it take for your black belt
Slydermv replied to Topic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
ravenzoom wrote: I agree totally... I think even my school tests BB a little too fast (prolly around 3 years is my guess on average) Even if a gifted student comes in, making them wait a bit longer ain't gonna hurt. A little paitence builds character anyways... I guess now that I'll be able to test for my BB in about just under 2 years from now (I've been training for about 1 year and 5 months)... Even then I think I'll wait another 6 mon to 1 year.... My g/f is goal oriented and she thinks opposite to me. She'd rather have her BB sooner.... to which I say... I'd rather be a solid coloured belt then a piss poor BB... Teachers can only do so much... I think we as students have to learn a little more paitence and realize our own limitations and mental readiness... -
Crosstraining too early???......
Slydermv replied to osuperu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I disagree with what most of these people are saying, but I admit having little knowledge in this area (I'm just a lowly brown belt). For me I would think you need a solid base in something before you should start branching out in other areas. I've had urges to leave my dojang as well and try other styles, but I think that would be more detrimental to what I've learnt... I mean... for martial arts the idea is that to become a black belt you preform most techniques correctly... ( it's the training after where you really learn to use them...) Now, moving onto another martial art before at least getting rid of your bad habit in one I think would be detrimental because along with learning a new style, you have to unlearn a bunch of crap you';re doing wrong from the previous style... I totally agree with doing different things and that no style is complete... but I also think you need to learn to walk before you learn to run... No offence to most MMA guys.... they are tough as nails and could lay me out.... but alot of these guys have technique that is mediocre...and I think that come from training at too many things at once... just my opinion... -
To put this thread back on topic... Does anyone know of traditions for uniform trim colours (collar being black, black/red, etc.) Or is it just a way for us chumps to buy more uniforms... heheh
-
Well, we pay about $850 per year, but we also have testing fee's which increase with each belt... so per month I figured it to be about $101 (Canadian) with say 3 belt tests over the year. Now our class schedual is very flexible and I believe I attend about 4 classes per week on average... which works out to 5 buck per class. Not bad I guess, but alot worse then some of the figures I'm seeing... heh. Wow some of you guys get training for dirt cheap....
