  1. you can set an arm bar without a cup. just pinch the knees together. i always train with a cup for grappleing. i just dont like my junk rubbing up against another dude
  2. i used to switch all the time, and practice both sides equally. then someone said that "if you do that you will end up like a switch hitter in baseball. there are some great ones, but most of the time you will just end up sucking from both sides of the plate" i dont have time to master one side let alone two, i have a real job that i got to go too. if i had unlimited time i would learn both. however that being said i do learn a little of soulth paw in case i am injured and must chang in the late rounds
  3. part of the reason uppercuts are "unnatural" is cause they dont practice the enough. for example they are hard to do on the heavy bag, mitt holder ussaly negect them. each gym the fighters have a differnt flavor but by and large my gym the guys dont throw many uppercuts. a very effective shot. great for in close.
  4. i am jelous cause i dont live in dallas and he is a great trainer. a bunch of guys from my school go down that way every chance we get to train with him. go you wont be disaponted. he also takes people to train in thai land
  5. seven 9 times out of ten i agree with you this time is no different. as far as muay tai working the other styles. i would have to agree. we can talk forever about which is better. but its all talk.the mixed martial arts arena was suppose to settle this. and to me it did. you see mostly muay tai style striking and bbj grappleing and wrestling. the crazy spinning kicks and deep stances have goon the way of the dinasuar. yes some of the fighters have different backgrounds but they all use these above mentioned techniques. if kung fu and akidto were better dont you think they would be in it. everyone likes to win and i doubt the other practitoners hate money.
  6. not hard to block at all pick up lead leg, turn outward if you want to break the kickers shin. i won a muay tai fight that way. leg kicks are dangerous but a bit of a gamble. they can hurt you or him. infact right now im sporting a pretty big knot on my shin. i ussally hide them behind a combo. if i see they dont lift the leg then its bombs away
  7. there are three types of grip crushing grip. best to use captain of crush gripping device pinching grip, often overlooked, grap to 45 lbs plates and place the front to front, now pick them up and hold them as long as you can. static grip. do farmers walk
  8. yeah its a true story. i was on neither side. i was with my fight buddys (guys from my boxing gym).and none of us could stop laughing. i dindt set the scene like i should have when i told the story. but the whole thing was really chaotic (except the meditating guy) lost of people were swearing, pushing others, girls begging guys not to fight and most everybody was drunk. alot of times people really dont want to fight they just want to huff and puff and go home and say "i was this close to knocking him out" alot of people if you give them an opportunity they will back out.
  9. funnyest street fight. two guys in a bar decide to take it out side.the one says ill fight you in a minute. he takes his shirt off and closes his eyes to meditate.(in freezing weather) the other guy and his freinds are like whats this guy doing his frends" he's channeling his chi. now settle down, be quiete and he will kick your butt in a moment" he did this for about a half hour. being interuped and having to start again. eventually the otherside got tired of waiting and left.
  10. how does he get this hold in the first place
  11. takedown work to fullmount throw punches armbar
  12. enough about you guys back to ME i said the rep of a striker. its high time our sport evolves to be fighters. not stikers and grapplers lucky punch-----nick diaz against robbie lawler. however i did see nick know someone else out with that pathetic excuse for a sloppy hook. so go figure,, maybe it wasnt luck. grappler knocking out striker. randy couture outboxing vitor and chuck---however randy is smart, athletic and well crossed trained...i dont think he can be considerd just a grappler anymore
  13. is this a point fighting tournament. if so try this in training as soon as the instructor says fight throw a quick back fist. if you get the point next throw a back fist followed by a side kick front leg. people ussally back up for the back fist and the hand rise alittle opening up side kick shot.
  14. there was an article on eye exercises in usa today sports for baseballplayers march 16th
  15. i say go for it. i have trained in thailand. they have camps that are very tourist friendly. ie train in day go to western hotel at night, eat at western restrant, chase women (well in thailand there is little chase) they have camps for beginners i beleive in learning right the first time. i have trained in korea for a year also and i find the thais to much more forengner frendly. make sure your cardio is great before you go. you dont want to waste your time grabbing your knees and panting.
  16. i have seen wallaces and i have seen other guys do it. with great effect. i have tried but never had an aptitude for it.will give it a go for a few months and see how it goes. i can do it well in the air and on bags but never as well while sparring thanks
  17. they are equally important factors and should be both worked on. ie 10 years ago i was wrestling with a guy who was an powerlifter. 450bench 600squat. wieght well over 220. me at the time 150 never lifted but good wrestler he was pushing into me and begging to be thrown. i set it up perfectly, hip to hip and way deep. he set his hips back, and hip upped me across the room. strenghth beat tech that time. the next day i started wieght training i now am 170 bench 315 squat 550 and have a 36inch vertical. we have some roiders in my school that are 260 lbs and i tap them 80 percent of the time. so tech can beat strength on another note even when i win i am still sore the next day.our best fighter is a 165 guy, i still hate the big guys and they seem to love the can opener
  18. monkey girl i couldnt agree more. not healthy for a growing boy to restict diet to the point where nails stop growing. the rules should be the wieght that you are the first day of practice is your wieght class. if you gain you could go higher but never lower. i was a wrestler in hs. and starved myself. kids dont know any better but grownup coaches should.
  19. gumbi its kind of interesting you say that. i am a nhb fighter and i hold no allance to striking or grappling. i love both. i dont think grappling or striking is a type of style so much as a phase of the fight. that being said now that i am taking on nhb fights i llike to cultivate the rep as a striker. is striking better? certainly not but in the ring people fear a striker. emotionally why? cause if you tap me out i just tap and go home. if you strike me out i sport a busted nose and swelled eyes for a while. in the street a broken arm can be devistating. however im too old for streetfights.
  20. me 1. sparing everyday. once a week hard 2. mitt work 3.bag work 4. lifting wieghts when i run i incorerate it into the workout. ie i round of bag work hard until i cant breath then start slow jog until i get my breath back then back to the bag. ie. i run a mile after hard work out. typical week. monday. max effort upperbody work in weights (ussally one or two exercises 2 sets each) i am very strong so it is not a weak point so im mainly just trying to maintain. it ussaly takes 20 minutes 1 hour muay tai 1 hour bjj tuesay max effort legs. btw i use big multi jointed exercises (bench squat deadlift cleans millitary press, board press, zercker squats......) 1 hour muay tai wed speed reps upper body 1 hour mauy tai 1 hour nhb thursspeed reps lowerbody 1hour mauy tai 1hour bbj friday abs work 1hour mauy tai sat plyometrics, sprints cross sport training. wrestling with a wrestler, point fighting with a karate guy, boxing with boxer. i have even tried that capolao * sunday a fun sport with my chick....tennis, rollerblade, ski, canue,
  21. i dont condone street fights but but in ring fights yes. i am scared to lose. it is not the lose but having to hear about it later from guys that dont even fight. i set up the fight with bravado but most of the time before the event in the locker room im scared shitless, not of pain but loseing. going up to the ring the guy always look tougher, faster and more skilled. if i could turn and walk out a sissy tunnel along the way i would. after the bell rings im ok and i start to enjoy myself.
  22. gumbi... perhaps i didnt explain myself well. first let me start off by saying the triangle is not one of my greatest moves...but im working on it....in fact when there are no strikes i ussally use it to set up an arm bar. however i will explain my nhb senerio that has happened multiple times. 1. when they are winding up to strike me i drop a leg over the arm that is cocked back. (very easy to do) 2. at this point he choke is not quite as tight as i would want it.(on the occations when it is i just wait for the tap) the guy will drop arm around my back and arch his neck to look for breathing room. 3 if we are not striking i would .1. yank arm around 2. pull on head and sink choke deeper 3. go for arm bar 4. go uma platta (im sure i spelt that wrong) 4. but today we strike.....i will use free hands to strike...this forces him to A.take the shots B. bring his hand in to defend and lower his head i then tighten the choke.
  23. when you talk about pivoting after you lift leg are you talking lead leg or back leg. i am going to try at gym tonight.
  24. you mean your school doent have a kata for multiple dog attacks. 1.get some pepper spray. 2. make allot of noise 3. hit him hard. a dog unlike a person does not have alot of pride if it hurts him he will ussaly stop. not always but its better than nothing 4. he is fast. run if you think you can hop a fence or to a tree. 5 get a stick 6 over all without a weopon its not a good match up
