  1. I like all the flashy bladed weapons as much as anyone, but they're not very practical today like they used to be. I feel that the Bo and the Escrima are two of the most practical weapons, because just about anywhere you go, you can find a couple of sticks or long pole or pipe of some sort (pool stick for instance) that you could use if need be.
  2. that's one tenth of a second per punch. I don't think it's possible using correct technique. I think someone could throw out some slop in that time frame, but that seems awefully unrealistic. Never really thought about it before though. I may have to try it and see how I do...

    Gaming

The new nintendo is going to be very nice and affordable (around $250 from what I hear). I'm also a big fan of the PS2, and it will be easy to find plenty of age appropriate games for the PS2. The PS3 is really for the serious gamer, and a lot of people may not like it at all.
  4. The new mac's with the Intel chipset can support and run Windows OS. I don't know why someone would WANT to do such a thing, but ok. Usually you have your avid Mac users and your PC users. If you want a mac, buy a mac, if you want a pc, buy a pc.
  5. I got my Motorcycle license just this past year, that was exciting. I remembered what it was like to first get my driver's license.
  6. If you give me the specific game you are playing I can give you an entire rundown of the rules. I have been an avid poker player and gambler for over a decade. PM me and I'll give you the rules to the specific game you're looking for.
  7. I speak english and spanish fluently, I can get by in japanese to an extent. I've picked up on a lot of common phrases over the years that would let me survive in Japan for a while, but I am by no means fluent and I can't read much of it.
  8. I regularly shave my chest/stomach, never shaved my legs except when I got my tattoo, but the only reason I shave at all is because my wife prefers it and it shows off my chest and abs better.
  9. all I can say is OUCH!! I hate having any dental work done, that's the worst. best of luck to you.
  10. I think it's great when two martial artists, especially dedicated ones, get married. It makes it so much easier to train and the other partner to understand. My wife has no martial arts background, and asks a lot of questions, though not really interested in learning. CONGRATULATIONS!!
  11. I am a huge fan of Sony, but I think their PSP lacks several features for the price. Personally, even though Nintendo has dropped the ball over the years, the DS Lite is worth the money by all means. I would wait a while before buying a PSP, at least until the PS3 releases, then it may be worth it. From what I hear, you'll be able to play PSP games through your PS3 and use the PSP as a Bluetooth wireless controller. Just some pre-release notes that I had read, but I'd wait to see if it actually happens. They really disappointed me with the PS2, because it was supposed to have all these great features and upgrade potential, and they never came out with the aftermarket stuff, or an actual use for the aftermarket products they did release. Just my opinion. PS3 is going to be incredible though.

    Rings

I bought my wife a new car the day I proposed to her, and then we went out shopping together for the actual rings and picked out a 3 piece set where all of our rings went together. I'm not sure what area you're in, but ask people you know around your area about good jewelers. I actually knew a jeweler personally and got a great deal on the set we got.
  13. Typically in my style, an adult can achieve a black belt ranking in about 4-5 years. However, there are several modern day, commercially focused (nicknamed "McDojo") dojos out there just in it for the money, and the faster you advance students, the more students come to the school, and the more money you get. I would be very leery of any dojo advancing students to black belt ranking in less than 3 years, even with prior training.
  14. Escrima is the name of the actual sticks used. Arnis is typically what the style is called using the escrima, being as it is a phillipine based art. But with everything else, I'm sure more styles have developed from the original. We incorporated traditional Arnis with our kobudo training as it is a very practical weapon.
  15. without doing any research on the subject, here's my opinion... I always felt that the writers attempted to base the movie around the goju system. I do know that in one of the movies (maybe the second one?) they are running seiyunchin kata. Also, the name "mr. miyagi". i don't know, maybe just a coincidence.
  16. that is absolutely rediculous. it is a part of our dojo kun to be neat and clean when we come to class, otherwise you're not allowed to participate. i would flat out refuse to work with such a person.
  17. you're never too old. i once taught an 80 year old woman who stuck in there and made it through to her black belt. took a bit longer, but she stuck in there and was really good at what she did.
  18. definitely the way to go. talk to your doctor and instructor. see how long you'll have to be on light duty and make sure your instructor knows exactly what you can and cannot do. he/she should be willing to accomodate.
  19. i created an informal one at one point in time, just using a microsoft word template. some organizations i have seen require that you have one to join or serve on the committee
  20. depending on my mood and the judges, i either compete with suparinpei or sanseiru. suparinpei is a very good kata, but sometimes judges get bored with it. i always try to run a kata that other people haven't performed before me that day.
  21. looks like it was a great seminar. thanks for sharing
  22. congrats on deciding to return to karate. it'll be dificult at first, but that will pass. I don't think there is anything wrong with "shopping around" for a dojo. Find the one that suits you best. The other sensei should understand. I always encouraged students to check out other schools, sit and watch a black belt class, and observe how they train. If there was ever anything they thought they were missing out on, I would help them if at all possible.
  23. As far as studying different styles go, i've done a few. I started in goju-ryu and have studied similar styles that either goju decended from, or styles that formed from a goju basis. This way, the basics are similar, but i learn some new technique and adapt my training. I think I would personally get confused if I strayed too far from my original style.
  24. this is somewhat of a controversial subject... i was always taught to strike through the target, but i've seen some amazing things done at full extension as well. for now, i strike through the target. if something else works better 20 years down the road, i may do that instead.
  25. I've hit myself at least once with every weapon i've ever trained in. Keep some good guards on the bladed weapons for the first several months...
