  1. My dojo used to have a seperate weapons class where all belt ranks could learn weapons, including white belts. Usually it's a little easier to learn a weapon after you've gotten a few months/years of open-hand training. However, if you're gettin good instruction, there shouldn't be a problem. Training in weapons can actually help you improve your open-hand skills, since weapons are an extension of your body. Esepcially if you begin training with the bo staff...certain strikes and blocks with the bo are just like throwing punches, but you're holding a stick. What kind of nunchaku are you using? Foam with cord instead of chain is usually the best for beginners. The foam makes them safe, and the cord makes them nice and light.
  2. Welcome to the forums! I love playing guitar, but lately my piano has been grabbing my attention again. http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/musik/music-smiley-010.gif
  3. *queasy* Oh that's nasty...what on earth could possess someone to cut off somebody else's hands? Too bad the article didn't have more details on that...
  4. Try saying that one in front of your daughter...freaking out over slang goes both ways!!
  5. I'm a short teenage girl, so I don't really get used as uke very often. In fact, it's much more often that I'm teaching a class and have to pick someone to demonstrate techniques on. I've been uke a couple times, and it's always been fun (yes, the masochistic mind of the martial artist is coming out again)...but I suppose if I had to be uke all the time, it would get old. I don't know though...some of the guys just never tire of it.
  6. Cowabunga, dude! TMNT was my generation's Pokemon (even though some of my generation became obsessed with Pokemon )! Only TMNT was wayyyyy better than Pokemon. To this day I still love everything to do with Ninja Turtles I got into MA for self-defense. Since I was only 12 at the time, this was obviously due to large pressures from my dad To be honest, I didn't really have a large interest in martial arts films until after I became a martial artist myself. Jackie Chan was the exception; I've always, always liked those movies.
  7. Don't roll your eyes at me! That slang actually stemmed from kindness! I was opening doors for people for about an hour, so I got a lot of practice, thus... "mad door-openin skillz, yo."
  8. Welcome to the forums!
  9. Welcome to the forums, GuyverGirl! I use a lot of slang (not on here really), but "mad style broke" is a new one...I'll have to freak my parents out with that My personal latest is "I got mad door-opening skillz, yo."
  10. I prefer Black Belt magazine. It just seems like it's of a higher quality than other MA magazines. It's still not top-notch journalism, but I like their graphics, and they explain things pretty well. Lots of pictures, lots of good techniques.

  12. Welcome to the forums! Good luck on getting that orange belt
  13. Those were all very cute.
  14. Well, he does have a master's degree in...well I don't remember the name of it, but it makes him very knowledgeable about stretching and such I was jealous. Mr. Wallace kept picking on my friends, but he doesn't seem to like to demonstrate on girls, so I was fresh outta luck. He's in excellent shape...he did so much demonstrating and so many techniques and never even broke a sweat or breathed hard.
  15. There needs to be a "sometimes" option My opinion of sparring really depends on how I feel that day. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I dread it. It goes in phases.
  16. Welcome to the forums! MA training can become addictive, but be careful not to overload yourself with too many styles too soon. You'll just end up with a lot of confusion with a hefty pricetag! Good luck getting into forensics!

  19. My dojo had the honor and privelige of hosting a seminar today that Mr. Wallace taught! Kids had a one-hour seminar, adults had a three-hour seminar. We learned a lot about kicking, and he showed us his favorite techniques. I got my picture taken with him Everybody learned a lot ... almost too much to remember! (or maybe I'm just simple-minded... ) We did drills that worked on fakes and general "sneakiness", as well as strength, flexibility and endurance drills. Let me just say this: He is absolutely insane!!! And I mean that in the best way possible. He's a goofy nut that made learning techniques very fun. He was "mean" in a kidding way...name-calling and such, but the whole seminar was very fun. There was barely a serious moment! I don't really know what to say...guess I'm just bragging Lemme try to provoke some discussion here... Has anybody been to one of his seminars? What did you work on? Did you get to fight him?
  20. Doh! I didn't bother to read the e-mail since I'd read it before...and I'd forgotten about the bank account stuff. Yeah that's a major issue. Guess that's what I get for not reading
  21. A week after I joined my dojo, they hosted a small tournament. Since I was still a white belt and clueless to my kata, I went to watch. Everything was going good during the kids' portion (except I think somebody twisted their knee or ankle or something). Then the adult portion began. An elderly orange belt by the name of Ed had just finished his point sparring match, and the next match was going on. Before you knew it, Ed was snoring loudly on his back. Everybody thought it was kinda funny until they realized something wasn't right. As it turned out, Ed had a heart attack. An ambulance was called and the tournament was postponed. So yeah that was kinda scary. He didn't die though.

  23. Yup...just about everybody gets those. The name is different every time, but the offer's always the same. The best thing you can do is to report it as spam to your e-mail provider, if possible. I know Yahoo! has a "this is spam" button in all its e-mails that you can use to report stupid mails like that. Basically, what these e-mail spammers are trying to do, is to get you to reply to this e-mail, since it's such an "enticing" deal. When they send you an e-mail, they don't really know your address is real or not. The second you reply, however, they have confirmation of your address, and will just continue to send more e-mails, but this time they'll be those crap advertisements. http://www.spacespider.net/emo/spam.gif So resist the urge to yell at them, because nobody's listening.
  24. I haven't seen the original, but I've seen one of the sequels, and it was a terrible movie. I mean, I know that all MA movies are going to be pretty corny, but the entire movie was a forehead-slapper, and the action was pretty lame, too. However, I have heard that the first one is very good, so maybe it's just a Sequel Syndrome.
  25. I agree with King of Fighters. Mortal Kombat is just plain boring. Street Fighter has tons of characters, and is a nice game to just pick up and play.
