I remember playing Virtua Fighter 2 in the arcade, and it was the bomb diggity, yo. In all seriousness, though, I loved VF2. But when VF4 came out and my brother started playing it religiously, I was surprised at how much I hated it. It plays so much differently from any other fighting game...counterintuitive, and oftentimes the controls felt unresponsive. Give me Tekken (especially with Eddy Gordo, my best character), Dead or Alive, or even Street Fighter any day. I've never played Soul Caliber before, though. What about that game Ergheiz? I never owned it but I played a demo. I think the entire appeal to that game was that it had other videogame characters like Cloud and Tifa in it.

Interesting dojo's you have practiced in?
monkeygirl replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I once taught my mom a kata while we were sitting in a car...but that doesn't really count -
seven kicks all in the air that is impossible for a human. that was just stupid. He meant three scissors kicks (two kicks at once) plus a side kick. So 2+2+2+1. I have also seen something like this, although I think it was only 5 boards. Ten Korean masters came to my dojo last spring, and the youngest one was incredible with his jump kicks! However many boards there were (at least 5, I'm sure of that), he broke all of them in one jump. Of course it would be incredibly difficult, but I don't think it's really safe to say that 7 would be impossible.

Welcome to the forums! Happy Birthday Isn't Martial_Artist Filipino? At any rate, I know there are a few members here that speak the language.

HTML is slightly difficult to learn if it's your first programming language, but I'd say it's probably the easiest out of any of the languages. It'll take a little of your time to learn and practice it, but it's DEFINITELY worth it!! You have more control, things load faster, and problems are much, much, much easier to fix because you know your own code. Plus, html-ing is pretty fun. :geek:

Enlighten us when you return.

Well, I guess there can always be TOO much of a good thing. So, I'm sad to see you not as active, but I guess it's for the best. Don't be a stranger!

Has anyone been to homestarrunner.com or newgrounds.com
monkeygirl replied to Voycoon's topic in General Chat
My school's Spirit Week T-shirt had Trogdor on it. It gave us all an excuse to run around screaming: TROGDOOOOORRRR! -

monkeygirl replied to Voycoon's topic in General Chat
I'm a big fan of homestar runner I don't really like newgrounds too much...some of the stuff is pretty funny, but most of it is just crap. Plus, I don't care for their ads. BUHLETED!! -
Gangster rap is making a comeback
monkeygirl replied to wrestlingkaratechamp's topic in General Chat
Linkin Park is a rap/rock hybrid, and it leans closer to rock. I guess I don't really consider something to be rap unless it has that weird beat behind it. Battousai: I gotta try that, bumping to Phil Collins... After reading through this thread, though, I realized there is ONE rapper I like...Will Smith. His lyrics have always been funny, interesting, and CLEAN. He's been off the scene for a while now, and his last album "Willennium" wasn't all that great, but I still liked a majority of the tracks. -
Thanks for the suggestion, battousai. Yeah, I have thought about using the intimidation factor once or twice. The problem is, I always have the biggest urge to crack my joints when I'm in the middle of Spanish class, and my Spanish teacher is my only teacher that would have a problem with me cracking my knuckles loudly. Tibby: I want to see a chiropractor, but it's not like we have a "family chiropractor", so we'd have to go out and find one, and even then our insurance probably might not cover it. Maybe I'll just get a profressional back walk done...that would be heavenly...

Here's one for all of us math geeks: The Square Root of Negative Two (-2) walks into a bar. He's just chillin' and talkin' to the other numbers, but then he sees the Number Three. So, the Square Root of Negative Two approached the Three and asked, "Can I buy you a drink?" So the Three turned to the Square Root of Negative Two and said: "Get real."

I named my Betta fish "The Incredible Joe Kanshi" Kanshi = Fish in Japanese...so he's basically a superhero named Joe Fish. Ummm I named a neopet "Chia_kun_do". That's as close as I came

Yeah, Patrick is really good at picking domain names, and he has a good amount of experience with starting websites. I've never started my "own" website with a domain and everything, but I do have some experience with programming in HTML by hand. Here's my tip: never ever EVER use FrontPage, because it puts in sooooo much unnecessary code and slows down your loading time majorly. One of the most important aspects of web design is loading speed, especially if YOU have a cable modem/T1, etc., because what loads quickly for you could take a lifetime on a dialup modem.

Ever do kata "mirror image?"
monkeygirl replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I did it quite a bit when teaching classes. I also used it as a training tool for my students to reinforce their knowledge of the katas. It's even more fun to have students face each other...one does the normal kata and the other does the mirror image. Not only does it look cool, it forces each of them to use their own knowledge, rather than relying on the person next to them for help. I love mirror katas...always have. They just add another layer of difficulty, which is something I always looked for -
Oops, sorry didn't mean to cause confusion. I don't have any specific "problems", it's just that I consider my back to be fairly weak. I have a lot of flexibility due to the fact that my joints, ligaments, etc. are ALL naturally very loose, and don't have a lot of muscle holding them together. Because of this, certain joints (hips, shoulders, and apparently vertebrae too) give me problems...my hips used to grind painfully but I went to physical therapy and got rid of that. Now, the mentioned joints just seem to "fall" out of place slightly and have to be popped back in (like when you crack your knuckles), A LOT. I crack my back, neck, and pop my hips back into place several times a day. I can literally tilt my head to the side and my neck will pop. So, I figured a back exercise might help me with that. The trainer at my old gym suggested the exercise to me, and my lower back felt much better. I know, it's pretty nasty sounding. Sorry, I just have a screwed up body

I don't really have much occasion to use MA clipart, but hopefully you can find this search useful: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22martial+arts+clipart%22 I can't really recommend any of the sites, I just googled and pasted

Well, I went to the gym last night for the first time in a week or so (I've had a fairly nasty cold), and I'm very glad I did! I tried dumbbells again, and actually found myself enjoying them this time. I did some bicep curls and other such standing/sitting exercises. It's squats, lunges, and steps that I hate doing with freeweights I did an upper body workout, and after extensively searching the gym, I found the Roman Chair (a.k.a "bendy thingy")! Hopefully I'll be able to fix some of my back problems now.

My students often e-mailed me if they couldn't make it to class, and I spoke with them on IM on a few occasions. However, it's a little different since I'm 16 and there isn't a huge age difference. Of course you can care about their personal lives...interact with them before/after class and ask them how school is going, etc. You may even become like a "big sister" to some of them. My younger students always felt like little brothers and sisters to me Going out for pizza with your students is really only OK if the dojo is sponsoring the event, and the whole school is invited (or maybe just all of the kids class students), as opposed to just one class being invited. So yes: get inolved and care about them, but I would say no to spending extra time, unless the kids or their parents invite YOU. For example, I've babysat for a few dojo families on several occasions.

I split off 7 or 8 posts from this thread because they were slightly off-topic, and I felt it was worth being discussed in another thread. You can find that thread at: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10644

I split off these posts because I felt that this was a topic worth discussing, with some good discussion already going on.

The picture is definitely of a jump back kick (sorry, I don't use many Korean terms ), I've done it many times before. However, the term sobat...I'm almost certain that's a Russian word. *hops off to investigate* ...OK I just asked my mom (who, by the way, was a Russian linguist for the Army 20 years ago), and she's pretty sure it means "Sunday" or "Sabbath". That's not 100%, though.
