I don't see what's so bad about that getup. Shorts and tanks are easy to kick/punch in. Kick off the sandals and fight barefoot like in the dojo. What would really be hard is fighting in a tux, or even worse -- a strapless evening gown with heels. Ha. That's why I always wear flats and dresses with straps and full skirts.

Did your attitude and ego change when you...
KarateChick06 replied to Kenpo man's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
What I don't understand is, if he means that I try harder once I'm hit or if I get anger. I don't feel anger, but just the urge to try harder not to get hit again..... maybe he interperts that as anger? I'm not sure.... -

My sensei teases me that I have an on/off button. I turn on when I get hit..... lol. That sounds weird but I can't think of another way to say it... lol. -
My dojo's never trained/sparred in street clothes. It's a good idea though, I just might bring that up..... Being a girl, it's hard to always dress so I can do karate. I avoid dresses because kicking in them is near impossible in some of them, like minis and ankle-length dresses. I have a knee-length super-stretchy skirt that I can kick in, but other than that... no dresses! I don't like them anyways. As for pants, I wear fatigues (I just like them, comfier than jeans too), sweatpants, stretch jeans and shorts. I do the splits and try out all my kicks in them before buying.... if I can't do the kicks, I won't buy the pants. Shirts, I usually just wear t shirts all the time anyways, but I do have one shirt that would be hard to fight in... it's very delicate and would rip if I punched. Luckily I wear it with a spaghetti strap top underneath. As for shoes, I just wear tennies and flats to church and such, flip flops and klunky sandals in summer. Hair and etc.... I have bangs that I cut short enough to be out of my face... I don't want to be blinded by hair when I get attacked. I also don't have pierced ears, so I don't have to worry about removing earrings when getting in a cat fight. I wear clip on hoops.

Help against a bullie
KarateChick06 replied to Metsubushi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I like that! When I was very young, I had asthma. When bullies would pick on me a could cough, turn red, and vomit on cue. Talk about freak them out. Then when the Exorcist movie game out, I would ad the unique voice change and learned how to speak certain sentence backwards. Freaked them out more. That's hilarious!!! -
that's funny!

I was self-confident before I started martial arts, and I thought I was pretty tough. Now, I'm still self-confident in general, and confident in my MA ability. Not so much in the dojo, but outside. I could easily get killed in the dojo, but you know the untrained people..... lol. I feel pretty confident that I could fend off the .... uh, overzealous boyfriend.... ahahahahaha. You know what's funny is thinking about my untrained friends who think they know stuff... ..... this one girl specifically. She once told me that she was confident that she could defend herself because she "took a self-defense class one weekend." I asked her to show me what she learned, and she did this little sequence or mini-form of about 5 moves. It was like a snap kick, a punch (done wrong of course), a eyejab, elbow, and some block thing. Me -- "Oh. [ ]" hehehe sorry that was random but it just came to mind. -
You don't know many 5 year olds, do you?

You're testing, and in the middle of a 2-man form. Your partner's fist gets caught under your gi top when you turn, pulling him with you. It would look rather awkward if this partner was anybody but your brother. LOL. That was just today. You're grappling and you get pantsed. OMg..... that's happened 2 me 3 separate time... It's so embarrassing it's not even funny! And the WHOLE DOJO knows about it the next day, even the people aren't in your classes. Worst thing yet: When you're trying to train really hard in class while being caught in a love -- not triangle, but -- pentagon. 4 guys are trying to impress you all at the same time....... not fun.

Any other girls like this- or just me?
KarateChick06 replied to elila's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
To tell you the truth, in all my sparring (about 4 years worth), I've never once gotten hit in the chest. All the guys/girls avoid that area like the plague -- or the groin. LOL. It seems funny that I've never even been hit there by accident..... I've got a hunch why though.. although it's probably not appropriate to state here... lol. We do grappling too; I make it a point to avoid the girls b/c they suck at it. Most of the time when I'm sitting on them they just lie there and say "Ok you win," even though we haven't started grappling yet. Guard position, eh? There's a (LOL ) "mount" position we do. Haha. I know some people who consider it wrong to grapple w/ guys because they're taking advantage of the girl (if not actively, then at least passively by just enjoying being where he is), but I think it's a necessary part of MAs. I mean, for girls anyways, most real self defense situation WILL include ground work, so why not practice it? I know the ends don't justify the means, but come on.. it's better to let some dude enjoy it a tiny bit of it than let another dude enjoy all of it. -
How sick/hurt have you been during a test?
KarateChick06 replied to KarateChick06's topic in Health and Fitness
It's funny how different styles go faster than others. I used to think my dojo tested too fast, until my friends started TKD and I saw how often they tested. It was over twice as fast as our testing! lol! MMACHAMP, how many belts in your system? Wow.... broken toes and fingers! OW!!!!!! -

KarateChick06 replied to KarateChick06's topic in Health and Fitness
Wow.... freaky. I'm testing this morning (May 21). I started to lose my voice yesterday, but it seems to be back again today, which is good. Can you see someone testing with no kiais? Good tension moves tho.......lol. -
Does the stripe go on the right or left?
KarateChick06 replied to grd's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We wear our stripes on the right side, because the tag on the belt is on the left side. The most we have are 3 stripes. -
Just curious. I've never been really sick, just nervous enough to have a stomach ache. My friend puked twice in her black belt test.
-
I'm sure most girls would prefer your gaze..... elbows don't make us self-concious. I do the same thing, thinking about how/where to hit somebody... .......You walk around with your guard up. I just did that recently; it was so weird, I looked down and my fists were up. I was like "What the....???" LOL
-
Oh lord, I do that so much it's not even funny. Once I was imagining a fight in the car while driving, and I almost went through a stopsign. Should've been thinking .... "What if I get distracted while driving?" LOL. I used to practice kata in stores when my mom was looking for something and I got bored. lol.

Things to avoid doing in a Dojo
KarateChick06 replied to elliotspirrett's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Too funny..... and very true! -
Get karate, TKD, or whatever style you do, written on you in Chinese. (Or Japanese, or Korean, etc.) Don't get it on your arm though! Those are hard to cover up when going for job interviews and stuff. Get it on your back.

^ That was timed nicely!

But it's not the kid's fault that he can't do everything the adult can. If he could help it, that would be different, but that's like giving a woman a junior black belt because she can't do everything the male black belt can. I'm sorry, I guess I misunderstood what you were saying. But still, if the adult and kid both put in an equal amount of training time, why does the kid get a belt that's worth less than the adult? It's wrong to short-change young people just because of their age. Just because the kid can't fight like the adult can, doesn't mean that he deserves less. After all, black belts hold up your pants.

I like his guy at my dojo, but he's my head and favorite sensei's son. Not a good mix. How do I stop liking him? Haha!
