Shoshin Nagamines book is called The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do. I found it a very useful tool for practicing Kata and also used the link http://www.shorinryu.dk. The boog Nagamine mentions was Karate-Do kyohan by Gichin Funakoshi.

We generally practice kata in every class. Myself I practice all my kata twice a day every day. I generally reel them off once in the morning and then a second time either during lunch time or when I get home from the office in the evening

Age and the Martial Arts
Ryukyu1 replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I don't like the idea of a young child holding a black belt. I understand some instructors will defend this by saying that the progress the kids in order to keep them motivated. For me this just doesn't wash. There are other ways of motivating kids and helping them to progress then giving them belts like candy. Long term this just devalues the rank and lessens any real sense of achievement. -
should young kids do a martial art?

I presume we are talking street fight here and if so I think if you have left the fight get that far and have not ended quickly then your not doing to good and if at all possible hall a** out of there. Otherwise if you really have to stand your ground keep your hands up so you can block and counter and keep your head up so you can see whats going on.

RyuKyu based on the chain of islands located between Japan and China and 1 cause it was the first thing that came to mind when I was trying to think of a user name. The number 13 is also my lucky number!

Saw it at a kickboxing competition once. The guy was prancing around the ring and when he would throw a shot it was generally accompanied by the sound affect. It all ended very fast when the guy he was fighting drove a straight punch straight into his face and broke his nose!

I would have to agree that is was not too bright a plan by the instructor and in defense of the kid this was only his second class with no ground rules laid out to him. With regards to punnishing him with pushups I don't agree that is the right way to deal with a very young child, All this would serve to do is scare them away from class. I do agree with the way the instructor dealth with the situation once hee had recovered and that was to take the child aside and explain to him what he had done wrong. Then again I think it takes special skills and patience on the instructors part to teach young children and to harness there abilities and skills from a young age. Not all have the ability and so it's their choice.

Picture this: Highly motivated 3rd degree black belt teaching a class of juniors (4-8yrs). He is standing in a horse stance while they all line up in fornt of him to practice hitting him in the stomach with their newly learned palm shot. My 5 year old is about mid way down the line observing the whole thing and waiting for his turn but also noting none of the shots are having any effect. Finally his moment of glory arrives....he assumes the correct stance...looks the black belt square in the eye and proceeds to plant the hardest kick I have ever seen out of a 5 year old straight in the gonads!!!! Tears rushed to my eyes both in appreciation of the pain the Black belt was going through (he wasn't wearing a guard) and also thru trying to surpress convulsions of laughter. Needless to say he will think more carfully before carrying out this drill again.

Preparing for Tournament
Ryukyu1 replied to KickChick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree with Tobias that it is good to be nervous beofre a comp. If you can harness this nervouness and not let it take over you will find you are actually sharper. What I tend to do in the weeks leading up to a comp is increase my level of training but not too much. Plenty of sleep and on the day of the event not over eating. When I arrive at the event itself and after registration etc I try to find a quiet corner and go through my kata..I do however slow them down considerably and concentrate on breathing and resistance. After I am finished this...some jump rope and the a little stretching. Works for me as it's now my routine. Good luck in the comp. -
Balance is truely essential, without it you can not hope to concentrate fully on the task at hand. I find my training helps relieve some of the stress of working day. In order for me to train and enjoy my family we all train at the same club, our friends train there too so it's easy to work social events into our time also.

Need sparring tips!!!
Ryukyu1 replied to Kickbutt's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Being not too big myself I find either a front or side kick really snapped out when your opponent is comming forward can really slow them down. Once you've landed the kick a quick rush forward with a barage of punches tends to make them think about it a little more. -
I've read thru the whole topic and have to agree that in most cases men can be physically stronger then women. I do feel though that alot of women compensate for this by have better technique rather then the brute strenght. I have to say I admire the chivalry displayed by Angus with regards to not hitting women but I also believe by sparrin it is beneficial to both sexes that there is some contact, that way you won't be so shocked when somebody tags you in a comp or in the street. The main thing to consider while practising in the Dojo is control. There is no need to beat the brains outta whoever you are sparring when you can be using this time yes to pressurise but also to perfect your movement and technique............In advance sorry if I may have offended anyone no offence intended.

Trained in pool when I tore ligaments in my ankle. At first felt a little embarrassed as it drew some attention but I found the resistance made me concentrate more I my movements and after 3 months had strengthened me a little more!
