I was watching a junior grading one evening and this ten year old was on the floor preparing to do a kata. As silence descended on th Dojo and every one was by now looking on the kid bowed, annouced his kata and opening out into a deep stance..at the same moment he let go this tunderous ripping fart that left everyone rolling out of their seats. We could even see the struggle on the testing instructors face as he tried to restrain the laughter

Unfortunatly some schools don't have enough members to support a seperate junior and senior class. In this case the do need to adjust the curriculum or how the class is give in order to cater for all students. I have noticed that some older people who who like to join a MA club are some times put off by the fact that they would be training with younger and fitter individuals and may be a minority. One must never forget we will all get old someday and gradually will suffer different pains that we take longer to recover from. [ This Message was edited by: Ryukyu1 on 2002-03-13 08:37 ]

Well the teachers are going on strike here in Ireland now also for more money. I think there should be more money available for teachers, perhaps it would encourasge more smarter individuals to go into the profession. I saw an interesting protest here yesterday...pupils had walked out of several local schools in protest against their treatment from teachers, quality of supervision and teaching!!

If I remember right wasn't there pictures or a story of some other kid who had died from ectasy he got at a rave last year in the UK. I don't think it will do much in the line of deterring kids from using. I know when I was a teeneager I rarely paid any attention to the newspapers except for the sports pages. I did get a good education on drugs from my family and not the drugs are bad you must not take them type, I mean the explained them to me and what they do. I think the new policy on dealing with drugs in the UK is mad. Relaxing policing on recreations drugs to concentrate on harder ones!! I think the should increase governmetn spending to help the police go after all drug dealers and smugglers with the maximum penalty when they are caught.

I feel safer now in the area I just moved to but in my old area it was like the wild west. If you did walk arpund trying to look assertive it would most definetly be taken up as a challenge..the challeneg being how many bones in your body they could break.

What about them warning labels on Head Gear...Karate is a contact sport......... Surely when you agree to get up and spar you are acknowleging the fact that you are going to hit and be hit.

Pre-meditated or not it was still domestic violence. This really hits home to me as when I was a young child I witnessed my stepfather use my mother as a punch bag. Finally one day he turned his attention to me. There is no punishment too good for dirt bags like this. :kaioken:

Sounds like you had a great time. Let us know when you post the pictures.

Sounds like you should look for another Dojo that caters more for what you are looking for.

I wonder if Pauly feels the same as you about the kick

I would prefer top stay on my feet and would not be too keen to go to ground. If I can get my attacker down I prefer toleave the scene before he gets back up. The only time I have seen a person go to ground was when they were dumped there and then stomped!

As you grow older that internal growth will become more important as you may see some of that speed and strenght leaving you and you will have to rely on your wits and experience.

I lean back slightly when sparring and vary my kicks heights. For street defense I work all my kicks hard and low. Less chance of falling or getting knock over going for that high kick.

Our club trains and test juniors and seniors seperatly. Also when somebody new comes in they join the rest of the class in the warm ups and physical although they are told to take it at there own pace. Later on the class is split up and the beginners and white belts are allocated to either a high ranking senior or assistant instructor in order to learn the basics. This prevents higher grades from being held back and also helps those selected higher ranks and assistant instructors with their teaching skills. OOPS I've stumbled into a MsDojo!!!!! ONLY JOKING
-
Never saw it happen and don't think our Sensei would allow it anyway. If they want to test themselves why don't they just attend a competition?

Always knew para's were nuts. We do some practice against knife attack in our Dojo using the trusty rubber knife and more imes then any end up with the marks where you've been caught. Another problem we've encountered in Dublin is junkies and others carrying out muggings and robberies armed with a syringe full of blood. You don't know what might be in it. Personally I would prefer to take my chance to run like hell.

I am all for cross training. I think it gives you that extra edge. I am somewhat sceptical of those schools which claim to teach all styles bunged into one. Surely this is just a case of the chief instructor taking what the bits which work for them from various other styles. Then you think if they have all these bits surely they cross trained!
