Defense against School Scuffles

I was always taught by my teacher that pushing is the second stage in a fight, and you shouldnt let it get there. But if it does, you should be the one to throw the first punch. -
Police Training

Chainpunching him to damnation... lol! -
I make the 'Y' sound and just let air out. So it sounds more like ya. I try not to make it to loud because you really shouldnt open your mouth in a fight

If I feel threatened they get hit.

By modern, I mean that you are not constantly in the horse stance. And yes, my instructor does a great job of teaching me the application of forms. I practise my forms a lot, and I enjoy it. But if I were to get into a fight, I would NOT keep my hands at my waist, and I would not fight in the horse stance. I have been taught the forms , I have seen the forms, I have performed the forms, and anyone who has ever been in a physical confrontation will agree, that are hardly applicable (Hope I used that right). And to the person that said you should keep your hands are your waist... that is just rediculous. Fight someone with your hands lower than chin level, see what happens. I will just tell you, they will hit you in the chin, and you will be knocked out. I'd much rather damage the back of my fist than my face. Mobility is the key to fighting, you cannot keep your head in one place, with your back straight, and your legs firmly planted in a fight. What good is a strong stance if you are being hit? Watch any Vale Tudo fights, do you ever see a horse stance, cat stance, dragon stance, bow and arrow stance? No, and if you do, the person that is in that stance is about to get seriously injured. They keep their hands high, because they know that if they get hit in the face hard, it WILL hurt. You may think your training has made you invincible, but it has not. Hold your hands high and don't stand still. Read some of Bruce Lee's books.

I'm aware of the term. And I love learning about the mechanics of the mind and dreaming in particular. You can trigger a lucid dream by setting a timer or something before you go to sleep, so while you're dreaming you see a flash of light or something, and you remember what its from.

To tell you the truth im not a fan of anything spinning, I wouldn't give my back to my opponent. It is a powerful strike but I think I'd rather just drive down the center... But if we're gonna get into that. My favorite strike would be a jumping spinning reverse crescent kick.

I've read a lot of Bruce Lee's books, so I'm pretty opinionated. And don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing on forms, in fact, I love working on my forms. I was just hoping we could discuss thoughts on forms.

I've seen all these kata, and I may be impressed by the moves, but they need to be made more realistic, with less stress on standing still and strong, and more stress on being fluid and keeping your guard high, etc. I think some modernized kata should be created if anything. Thoughts?

Have you ever heard about a student failing a belt test?
Oopgrub replied to Bleeding Lion's topic in Karate
I think the reason most people pass is because the tests are meant to push you, not kill you. Its relative. -
You will be able to defend yourself better with a bent back.

How you've dealt with verbal things
Oopgrub replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Actualy, its kind of funny how I deal with verbal things. I just joke back, usualy unless they really offend me I just react with humor, because they are just sad little things anyway and shouldn't be taken seriously. If I hear something, I just look directly into their eyes with a straight face and say 'Your words hurt me profoundly, why do you say these hurtful things?' they don't know what to say back, or at least I haven't gotten a coherent response yet. -
Its obvious you feel very strongly about your martial art. I am impressed by the way you got it across to us. You didn't say 'My martial art tought me how to be the best fighter on earth.' you told us how your martial art changed your life for the better, this is the first post of this kind I have seen. Keep training buddy.

Exactly how hard is it to fight a Capoiera master?
Oopgrub replied to username9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
you would expect yourself to be able to block one of our 360 jumping spinning flippy dippy kicks and get your arm broken... heh, jk. But really, they are some powerful kicks in this art -
Well, im trying to make myself a rounded fighter, so here are the styles I train in, I think these are enough . Boxing for its sheer power, evasiveness and footwork Tae Kwon Do for its powerful kicks Capoeira for the cadence and balance Kenpo Karate for its massive arsonal of hand strikes, weapons and strong stances Brazilian Ju Jitsu for of course.... the grappling and takedowns Pressure Point fighting, so I know all the places that people dont appriciate my knuckles grinding into Eventualy I want to take tai chi and yoga, which isnt a martial art, but it seems benefitial to my flexebility, strength and mind
