Edged weapon (eg knife) defences
street fighter replied to kickcatcher's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
To anyone who has not trained with dummy blades and at full speed with expeiranced knife or blade practicioners, RUN. Knife fighting like you point fighters use faints, misdirection, and bait their targets, if you dont understand what I am saying RUN. There is no shame in survival. -

What art is better for street fighting?
street fighter replied to Sinar89's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Man oh man hope that there aint to many women close to ya, even though I do agree it is hard to turn the average female into a powerful striker I know from experiance that does not mean they can not drop the unaware man on his *, seen it to many times with a 120 lbs 30 yr old female, and a 160lbs female, no they would not last in the ring with trained men of their own weight, street defense is something different. I also agree that women need to know and understand the ground so they can have better escape oportunities as well as soft target destruction. Dude dont say that to a woman and turn your back, donkey punchs hurt. Thats all for now -
what to do against a opponet wildly swinging?
street fighter replied to Rock-fght's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with step out of his way, even a lucky strike can knock you out, if you have no choice say because to door to freedom is on the other side of your windmill then cover and charge, hit him like a linebacker, dont have to be a master to do that one. Just mine -
The straight blast, hey fellas, yes if the bad guy is not ready for it he will be set back on his heels and that is a good place for a bad guy to be, but someone said it above step left or right and your out of the attack, nothing is full proof but it is worth practicing but suit up and good full contact with a willing partner and see how hard it is when the other guy knows it is coming. Hey thats just mine

Hey ya'll, JKD never studied a stand alone system but have studied and practiced the concepts of JKD and Wing Chun, I have used it as opportunity for entry and destruction, I am (if it means anything) an instructor in Paul Vunak's PFS and I do find parts of it useful but not as a stand alone. I do find the wooden dummy training to be great for limb harding and for reflex in CQC but have not been able to employ it in full contact to any satisfing degree, that maybe because I stink, but the concepts of JKD and the mind set as I was taught are good in a self defense situation. So I say learn the concepts and understand what makes the sytle if you will work then adapt it to your abilities, do this in all styles and systems and you will be alot more comfortable in almost any situation. Thats my opionon

Top 10 Streetfighting Problems.
street fighter replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Very large problem there my friend, hmm seem to me if this happens on a regular basis, this butt wupping, then it is probably going to end up in a death, yours, or theirs if you find a weapon and are able to use it. No answers here just keep yer friens close and call up the local skin heads and ask for protection. UH OH did I say that, yes I did I dont like people who hate others because of race or religion but if it is as bad as you say, dont join them, use them, that is if the cops will not give you a hand. Hey who are you going to peotect, your family or the guys wupping yer butt. -
Defending against Strikes
street fighter replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No resent street fights, so only speaking from full contact sparring, so for what it is worth, deflection with body motion, this generally open the door for and entry, me I like to stay on my feet but do love the clinch side or center to apply knees, elbows, and takedowns if needed, headbuts, and biting, for a ground fighter who wants to fall in the street the entry will still work for them as well, but one person talked about the haymaker and with that going straight in should work. If you are a boxer well I suck at boxing and have yet to perfect the break hand with face but i am working on that. -
Hey I do not have any experiance in this non-lethal stuff so I am asking ya'll to give me good feed back and if experianced in the stuff do you think it is street viable. Oh one other question do ya'll believe a 5 year old can disable a would be kidnapper using this CDT. I'm waiting on the good and the silly answers. I know what my intial feelings are but maybe ya'll can change my mind.

The CANE, hey not a bad choice, but with everything the practice must accompany the weapon. Here is another cool little tool, we call it a BOLO others may compare it to a kubaton, both are simular in size and use. The BOLO at least as I have trained does not have the key ring option but both are extremely devestating in CQC and are not hard to learn the proper use of. The Kubaton with a wad of keys can be used as modern day mace and is quite effective and takes almost no training, but I do not endorse having to many keys on your ring for safety reasons, to many keys become confusing when stressed and trying to find the house or car keys. See Ya'll later

What makes a great fighter?
street fighter replied to Carbon_Cricket's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hey brickman, just a thought from me to you, step outside of the box even if just for alittle while and maybe do some mma, im not saying go fight in the ufc just go and experiance some of the other thoughts on fighting and training, sparring means different things to different people and schools, it sounds as if you do not mind the pain and training, so you might find that a full contact mixed school would be a treat, that is assuming that there is a good school in your area and if not maybe just buy some of the different combative dvds out on the market, sure some will suck but others will be great, hey try and always keep an open mind about things you may not have experianced. If you truly wish to be able to be effective in the street against the variaty of opponents that you could possibably meet then always expand your knowledge base. -
Edged weapon (eg knife) defences
street fighter replied to kickcatcher's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Oh yea, prepare to bleed, it has been said many time but what is not said is that steel can reach bone pretty easily in the arms and legs and ribs, you may do more than just bleed you may go into shock, inside the arms and you may also lose the use of your hand and or arm depending on depth and location of the slash or stab, be careful and dont depend on the movies for your fighting style, and be sure if your teacher teachs the blade that he knows what he is doing, knowing some cool techniques is not blade fighting, understanding ranges and foot work and what can and cannot be done in a given time and distance are core basics. Sparring with enert blades is a must and to be honest with yourself and training partners, if the wood or plastic makes contact then in a real steel situation you are more than likely bleeding if not worse. -
Edged weapon (eg knife) defences
street fighter replied to kickcatcher's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Wow you can do a book to answer this one, situation i guess would be a major factor, skill another, in a hostage situation where the blade is static then deflect and wrap for control and damage may work but in an active striker deflection and counter may be best, disarms are sometimes tricky but if have control of the bad guys weapon arm it can be done, running like hell is the best or shoot them, and Roadkill is right as well if put in this unfortunate situation look for an improvised weapon, stick, bottle , purse, keys, ect. I love knives and training with them and the indonesion history that has help shape my way of blade training but if you can run then do that first. -
Kicks above the waist in a real fight?
street fighter replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Batman2 your a pretty funny guy but, to be serious you have been lucky to have only fought the uninformed or the stupid, and thats not a bad thing and to your good luck but be always wary of those who may pass that high kick or just catch it, one leg fighting still has not cought on very well among any of my associates. It sounds as if you have spent alot of time in the traditional which is great but you might want to broaden your knowledge by doing some cross traing with different combative style and less sport. Hey its just my opinion -
LEO law enforcement officer, or someone whos job requires them to try and arrest or subdo as apposed to a civilian just trying to survive an attack and go home. Yea I know that i ramble from time to time. So you have a bit of info on me I do work with the average civilians locally when possible and truely enjoy that time but most of my focus is on the military and those doing contract security work some of our more trouble neighbors around the world.

Hey thank guys for the comments, I do agree with most of the statements in here but, come on street i might look kinda funny with a club in my pocket. But I do agree that edged weapons look scarry and that is a bad thing in court and I am not advocating reckless uses of knives or killing in all defensive situations, sure they is always room for accidents but isnt it always the case when using any force. Yes we must train and train and train but very few of us have ever been in a pants soiling situation and even fewer have been successful. I am a believer in edged weapons but I aslo believe in my ability to avoid situations, and I believe in the sweet little .45 Kimber on my side, But hey folks again thanks for your opinions it takes all sides to be complete and its good to here from other dedicated folks who happen to love the same thing that I do.

Hello folks, joint locks in a fighting situation are best applied on the unsupecting or injuried. Soften the person up first then apply, oh yea know what yer doing or you may be the one in a stupid position, most good Hap Ki Do guys and Chin Na practicioners I have trained with know many counters and then counters to the counters. I say why do you need to submit, other words what is your mission to subdo for the police, to just calm a drunk down or whatever, if it is a street attack just break it and run. I have done a fair amount of Chin Na from Wing Chun deflections and when the person is really trying to hit you it is real hard to catch and apply what is so easy and cool when doing give and take. Be careful and dont expose yourself to undo danger unless you are a LEO of some other form of security.

What makes a great fighter?
street fighter replied to Carbon_Cricket's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hey lucky it semms I am following you around, I agree with the training thing wether it be the streets or from a good teacher. Good skills and a determined attitude and the willingness to actually fight and not just freeze and curl up, will generally produce a successful fighter. I have seen to many strong men,( and women) freeze and cover, some can be brought out other just dont seem to have it in them. Good skills, lots of practice, without the heart equals, victim. My opinion you all. -
Grappling vs. Striking
street fighter replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well hey Lucky, I would have a tendency to agree with your whole statement other than I like it inside but other than that I agree the last place I want to be is on the ground except in class. I have to say this and I hope I dont offend to many but I do not concider myself as a Martial Artist,( I DONT, YALL CAN) I consider myself a combatives instructor and practitionor. Yes I try to be a good guy but I do not hold myself to any beliefs other than those of a good ole southern boy who was lucky enough to be born and raised in a America, I bow only to God and salute my flag, other than that I hope i am able to pass on the ability to survive in bad situations. I will say I have not one thing against those you wish to follow the old ways and if not for those ways I would not know what I know today, but for me they where just a means to and end. Oh boy here I go resending that statement, I do have a problem with the traditional teachers who pass off Kata and one steps as street tactics, it may be just lil ole me but i think that is dangerous, my stuff may not be the whole bowl of biscuts but at least i try and give them a picture of reality, at least as best I can. There are too many publications, and news stories showing the evil out there and some people must be wearing blinders. Hey its just my opinion. -
What art is better for street fighting?
street fighter replied to Sinar89's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
There is only one best and that is the one you can actually employ or deploy when the time comes. If you can find a place that teaches as Lucky and others have said all ranges that would be the best place to start, but that does not mean that the teacher can teach or even knows what to teach so there you now need to research the school even if that just means watch, listen and dont be affraid of the book store most have a wide range of styles and systems to seach through. It is my opinion that you should also learn to handle a knife and maybe a stick, though you may not run around with either the knife or stick once you learn the concepts and ranging improvised weapons will now be part of your arsenal. Oh yea it dont happen over night, it dosent have to take 5 years to be proficant and knowedgeable but it can take a few years depending on your ability to learn and your teachers ability and knowledge, and you may need more than one teacher, wow looks complicated now huh, even if it is alittle work if you find a home in the fighting arts you will never be satisfied with out more and more knowledge, at least I am not. -
Grappling vs. Striking
street fighter replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well hello it seems that seven is not in agreement with any of my thoughts but hey it is America. O.k. Seven from my experiance not many things go as planned when reality strikes but being prepared and being able to react in a timely manner will sometimes open doors, i see that you have trained in Chinese fast wrestling, thai, and bjj, and I realize that one is a striking art and the others generaly take place from a hands on situation and are great styles, but from biting i dont intend to end a fight but to get a reaction to open the door for something else, small joints dont end the fight but if given opportunity snap'em and maybe a opening will come available, look dude i am a striker at heart, and from the clinch I feel most comfortable and yes if i should wind up in a clinch and i can i will put a thumb in the ocular socket and if it happens he might not stop fighting but when he attemps to remove the thumb maybe he will expose a good elbow shot or kneeing opportunity that might end the fight. Its about the flow from one thing to the next if this dont work maybe that will and if im lucky i will be attacked by a pure dumb *, lets hope for my sake huh. -
Grappling vs. Striking
street fighter replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hey guys lets not forget cage fighting is not street fighting. In a street fight the thought of a final solution is there and all the neat little dirty tricks that are not allowed in the ring. Give me a finger and i will break it, your body I will Bite, and your privates i will show you before i gouge out your eyes, I prefer to stand and strike and in close quarters is better but i do agree you had better know the basics of the ground or your night may end aburptly. -
Defending yourself with a knife!?
street fighter replied to GhostFighter's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
It seems the passion has died, shame. Post guy if you are going to carry a blade and intend it to be a means of self-defense do yourself a favor learn how to use it. Knoweldge is a powerful tool and in learning the art and reality of knife fighting you will be less apt to deploy a blade except in times of dire need. If you need to see the potential of edged weapons watch Cold Steel's videos and the meat cutting sections, it will be a taste of the reality and the damage a blade can inflict. All of the legal advise you have been given by others is probably good advice but rememeber in the end SURVIVE the encounter. -
O.K. fellas I get the legal end of the question now, lets get to the reality of the knife as a weapon of self-defense key word self-defense. So you know where I stand it will be used as last resort but if given opportunity it will be good ole selfish me before poor ole him, I would rather deal with a jury and jail before meeting the mortician. Thank you for your comments and give me more.
