What makes a great fighter?
street fighter replied to Carbon_Cricket's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Shapeless, thats great 11 yrs, wish I had the time and teacher around here to get deeper into JKD I have only about 3 yrs of concepts and that is not JKD every day just when it is appropraite for the lessons. A great fighter to me again is the one who was born with the no quit attitude and the ability to survive and keep coming back. He may not win in every case but in every case he never quits. -

delli04, what are you going to assess if the guy hits you with a lucky wild swing and drops you, the assessment is over as soon as the guy tries to hit you, you defend if that is your way, mine is to try and destroy at least until the guy stops attacking maybe even further if he pulls a weapon then I can only surmise that he wanted to kill me so I must in good faith inflict much pain to his troubled soul. Wild swingers are dangerous if you just stand there or let them turn you into a wild swinger, move in or move out its simple, but never just stand there or act like you are an airplane like the bone head in front of you. the look most have when being attacked. I just like this little guy. -

This should never happen in a street fight, you have let yourself be pulled into a trap when you could have walked away or attacked if walking was not an option. This now be what you will be doing because you left your abilities behind and decided to argue with someone. Do not let these guys beat you before the fight starts. Be this guy he has trained and he knows that if he has to fight it will be either on his terms or at least he will be focused. Leave the other at what just happened. -
Uppercut, I have centerlined from chest or ab level to throat and face I guess this could be confused with an uppercut, but to be fair I have only studied concepts and I am not familiar with all of the proper terms and names. After a trap the next open shot may be the face or neck so the "uppercut" was taken in flow but, it is not like the uppercuts in the san shou or boxing techniques.

Kicks above the waist in a real fight?
street fighter replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Siuf, ok I will take your point of veiw as just that, your point of veiw. Not knowing the training you have been exposed to and you not knowing mine it is difficult to really compare and understand what we think in our minds will and will not work or what is safe to attempt. I do agree that there are people out there who certainly have the ability to cleave my head clean off my shoulders but, they are few and far between and for those few yes it is a good kick but, here is my point for the 99 out of 100 who cannot execute the kick effectivly in the street it is very dangerous. If it is so that my numbers are even close then why do you think some schools continue to teach their students to do this type of kick for defense or just as bad do not inform them of its inherit dangers. I know this is back to my bais against high kicks in the street but as we all do I pull from my experiances and have found that most kickers, and I have trained with some good ones can work wonders in point sparring sessions but when the heat is turned up and the threat of being takendown or facing full contact leg kicks they have their timing thrown off and the effectivness of the kick becomes less than effective, couple this with the additional adrinaline involved with most street situations and most, not all, are back to being as effective as their white belt brothers and sisters. I do understand the difference in Tai and TKD and the training differences aswell, but when you face an unknown opponent with unknown skills you must be prepared in my opinion to exercise controlled chaous not recklous abondon with your attack and defense. Please forgive my spelling and this is my opinion. -
Yea the broom. For the housewife? or for my mother in law.

What is CDT
street fighter replied to street fighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Cobra, thank you for your comments and I have to agree with you fully, but I want to see how others feel, personally I had a local CDT person do the tricep pinch or what ever you call it and it was all I could do not to knock his block of, it hurt but it just made me want to bust a few, these are the same people that after the young girl was kidnapped and killed in Fla around a year or so ago that went on the local news for 5 days showing how even a 5 or 6 year old using CDT could escape an adult attacker. It made me mad as a combative instructor to see people selling something that is so potentialy dangerous. I do believe that there are times that nerve strikes and pinches and skin tearing will work but I do not think i would try and sell it as a first line self-defense or as a system, for me they would only be a means to an end. thanks again -
I have not expeianced the one inch with but a few people but the man who was my sifu would in my belief drop any man. I am 6'4'' 250lbs and am not a freak show follower but when he placed his fist or open hand on my chest, lower ribs or just my shoulder and did the technique it was not imagined pain or imagined that I was physically moved. I have practiced at no space, 1, 2, and 3 inches and once you understand the mechanics it is a powerful tool and works great in close quarter combat.

Kicks above the waist in a real fight?
street fighter replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Siu, ok I am an idiot,so whats new? I will kick to the head and/or knee the head everytime that I can, it is that when I do the head will be between waist and gound level. So there I do not rule out head kicks, shoot in a street situation I think it is a simple way to end the confrontation, chop'em down them take'em out. So now that I have admitted that I too like head kicks can you and I be friends, and I want you to understand that I never assumed that that is the only kick (headkick) it just seemed to be what everyone was talking about and I gave my unhumble opinion. I have been humbled by you and your beliefs, but in my training the only person who lands the good head kicks is the really good or the ones facing the unprepared. It is just not a risk I am willing to take in the streets unless, there again the head is where I want it not where my aggressor wants it nor will I teach it to those who come to me for self-defense, sport sure, real life no. -
Good stream kickbox, but you know the only reason I do not say that I am a JKD teacher as appossed to a combative instructor is the misconceptions of others and the meaning of what JKD truly is. I am a certified instructor of JKD concepts and the only people who will know this are those who are already training with me. JKD and "kung fu" are alot alike in the sense that people are lost in the movies and not true meaning behind each, one is a word to discribe anything that one works at to perfect and JKD is anything that is perfect for you, in the martial since. I hope this is not to confusing and bring the wrath of the JKD community down on me. Hey it is just me being me

Kicks above the waist in a real fight?
street fighter replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
siufeifei; No I am saying that even the pro's fall down sometimes and that in the street it is better of safer to keep the kicks low, the idiot part is the guy who does not see it coming or is to inept to do anything about it, the perfect person for the high kick, people who have trained in simular manner to the way I have would be less likely to fall so easily for the higher kicks. What do I train in? Ok, I train in concepts from boxing to chin-na to ground fighting, the part that would help people such as myself is the san shou, and kick boxing as well as the ground fighting when it comes to entry and shooting for a ground technique, not that I recommend ground fighting for the streets as a first choice. As for the high kick do you not think that with all the people that do or have done TKD that they if trained properly maynot fall so easily much less the Tai fighter and or kickboxer. Hey its just my opinion and if you like kicking high, go for it, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. -
I think you missed the point, it is not that what I do is better than what you do it is that it is better for me because I am able to do it not just try and conform to what works for others who may be bigger, smaller, faster or slower, I have found my groove that is why it is better,(better for me).
-
Wow, Jerry understands what most are to ---- to understand or care that they are using the term incorrectly. Ki-ap, how many TKD people hollar this every time the kick, do they know that they are yelling the word "yell" and the list goes on and on. hey it just mine

street fighter replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I hope I have not offended anyone with the "idiot" statement so, if you are an idiot I appologise but, if you are an idiot will you know that I am talking to you, hmmm, well to be on the safe side and show I have a good heart, cover yer head someone is trying to kick you in it. If you see a person wearing a "I do head kicking MA'' duck and run, if it says "I do butkicking MA" cover that and run, if it says"I get my kicks at so and so" go and watchem get kicked, makes you wonder who the idiot is if someone will advertise the location where the are getting kicked all the time and want people to come and watch. Strange world, see ya all you soon to have busted knees guys later. Just mine -
Kicks above the waist in a real fight?
street fighter replied to longarm25's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Go ahead and go for those head kicks in the street, it is the best thing any MA can do, head kicks yea. Perfect balance, perfect technique, perfect distance and oh yea hopefully a perfectly unaware idiot standing in front of you. I think of all of the above the idiot in front is the most valuable asset to have in a high kicking confrontation otherwise, know how to grapple when ya hit the ground and while yer down there becareful of the rocks, glass and oh yea, his buddies, and if you get yer leg caught by the not so unaware guy its ok the most he can do is break yer ankle, bust yer knee, kick yer groin, or just run down the street draggin ya, so go head and assume the guy in front is an idiot, who knows he might be, or. Just mine -
Just go train, geez fellas while you guys are debating Bruce would be training. No one will ever control JKD and those who wish to learn and expand it for their on needs. It is the way it was and is meant to be. I have only trained in JKD/Wing Chun concepts and to be honest mine is the best version, not that ya'lls isnt great but mine is what works for me, that makes it the best for ME, I believe thats what Mr. Lee wanted, he will show you his path but one day you must choose your own way.
-
What is the real JKD? Do you mean teach only what Bruce brought to the table before his death? I guess that would make it like Tae Kwon Do and other traditional styles and not what Bruce had in mind for it grow and to expand with the times and our changing needs. If that is the case that would be a shame, Mr Inosanto certainly has earned the right to practice the art as he sees fit.
-
If you have trained in wing chun then may i ask what is the reason for the other arts, is just to expand your base of knowledge, for fun, or for some other reason. This not meant to be inflammatory just a question into why different people train in various arts and some never do anything different. I find it to be a good thing to see and experiance what others do so that you do not windup training in the dark. Thank Ya'll

There is no ultimate art except for the one you love. You have to deside what your objectives are, street, sport, traditional, concepts, its all in what suits you. I love to ground fight in training but not for the streets, but it is still fun, I like striking and blade and blunt force weapons training, but I try not to confuse reality with the class room, sport with reality. There are no judges to save you in the street, when you mess up you mess up, no do overs. A policeman has different concerns than the average civilian, the military person even different from either of the above. Check'em all out and go with your heart, if you dont like it you wont do it.
