beginning with kickboxing...
Sam replied to Icetuete's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Your TKD will improve massively from doing kickboxing..... id do it just for the epxerience of doing something new without having to start over. -
In choong Mu ive always been taught they were block rather than strikes - but still done at full speed. It really annoys me when i see people changing the pattern. ..... ok the rhythm is open to interpretation but the moves are set. And yes - a lot of competitions ive been to lately are moving that way [with the division being very small] - ive been lucky and the tournaments ive been at have had some high quality forms nad sparring - but sometimes you ned up with 2 small a group

This should be interesting...

Yeha - though that wouldnt be that funny - its amazing how hard people can drive themselves when given an opportunity to do so and constant encouragement; you can really find out a lot about yourself as well. -
What to look for in TKD studios

Also - talk to the instructor and ask questions - get a gauge of what he's like as a person - thats always good to know. -
Congratulations to all of you - and good luck with the rest of your training!

The real deal on the streetfighter, and streetfighting.
Sam replied to goshinman's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
also people that street fight - compared to self defense situations is completely different liek you say.... self defense is liekly when a fight starts for whatever reason - street fighting suggests people going out to fight..... very very very different situations to be in -
Also even with grappling you can never repeat all the scenarios - in self defense someone may end up doing something either (a) youve never thought of (b) you werent expecting.... or just do it in a way your not used to.... just like there are LOADS of ways of punching so i agree that its useless saying "if he punches do this" because a punch cna come in so many forms.

Could you beat a street fighter?
Sam replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Especially in my experience [tkd] we get a lot of people who arent so confident in their abilities nad so brag a lot about being ablack belt and show off as much as possible..... quite funny to watch. -
Synthesis - creating your own new application for a given technique, or changing the way the technique works to generate power or impulse in different quantities. Evaluation - breaking the technique down into component parts to understnad what parts of the movement generate the power, impact, etc. or..... evaluating a completely new technique you see based on what you already know - and being able to judge its effectiveness without need of constant training [in the taxonomy you state this would be classified as being an expert]. Thats probably how i would define the last two.... difference between 4 and 6: 4 involves looking at technqiues you know and understanding why they work..... evaluation - understanding the theory of techniques in general to apply to a different new situation. theres my little ramble... any thoughts on 5 and 6?

Granmasterchen - thinking of getting more into breaking so would be very appreciative if you could send me some details on training techniques, and regime for conditioning, etc. Thanks. Back on topic - there are a lot of breaks you see that seem impossible [like a foundation support brick] but actually arent, ive seen these done, and even attempted to break on before the guy went on to break it in 2.... so i was pretty sure it was real. I imagine there are people out there [as always] who do fake difficult breaks - there was one person i remember[no names] who tried bullet proof glass in paris but actually used a different plastic compound which breaks much easilier. Anyway my point is yes people can and do break bricks [and lots of them] but also be wary of demonstrations where it looks 2 easy .... remember theyre still bricks.

your first dojo beating
Sam replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree completely - just like doing things properly, sepcially since TKD gets so much stick for being either light contact - or no hands... neither of which we do. -
Not always true - an honorary rank may represent your skill in a certain martial art transferring to another one - a lot of martial arts have time limits on how long it must take you [minimum] for BB, so when high grade MAists from other styles transfer over and train - they are sometimes awarded an honorary belt - i.e. a belt with no test.

you could try googling it or just hte name of the video if you have it.... or post the name here and ill look for it.

Angela - I think we're disagreeing over what full resistnace is.... im not saying that the partner should resist a move he knows is going ot happen...... that means he would be able to set a base and resist the move based on waht it is.... but on the other side - he shouldnt let the move happen as in just go through with it.... the move should be attempted without the help of the target. From experience ive seen a lot of techniques been shown and you see them done, and the person being demonstrated helps the other person get the move right if you see what i mean... i.e. a punch going wide on purpose or to a particular side - or just falling down rather than actually getting tripped. I agree you cant do moves without warning otherwise we'd all be badly injured - just that the target of the demonstration shouldnt just go through with the move..... do you see what i mean?

Im insured through my organisation with the BTC [british Tae Kwon Do council] covering me for 2,000,000 private and 10,000,000 public for £25 pounds a year at any place i choose to instruct.... Never had to make a claim in any way, so not sure about their claim policies and treatment... Hope that helps in some way.

But also he's a young child..... self defense isnt really the same for him - unlikely to be able to defend against an adult, whereas even well trained at a young age fights are rarely serious - as they get older they will be able to work out what is effective for themselves. but i agree a lot of people accept techniques and ideas because the person that told them is a BB.... or a Master or whatever [see post on hero worship in general martial arts]
