XMA on Discovery
isshinryu5toforever replied to scottnshelly's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
For all of how much I dislike XMA, I have to say it's like the new kung fu flick. It's gained popularity among the younger generation kind of the way the Ninja Turtles did in the 80s and early 90s and Bruce Lee films did in the 70s. They want to be able to do the stuff they see in the movies, and this offers them a way to do at least a little bit of it. -
I'm afraid to fail someone...
isshinryu5toforever replied to afitzwater's topic in Instructors and School Owners
the only problem with that is in this situation you would have people whining about what the eligibility standards are. If they believe they've reached this standard, they will then ask why they aren't testing. The easiest way out of this is to join an association of whatever style you are in. Like if I were to join the Okinawan Budo Kai association for Isshin-Ryu. These organizations have specific testing guidelines that their instructors must adhere to. In some, they even make the students conduct their tests in front of a master. This would help with some of the bureacratic red tape. You now have a set of rules which were handed down by a governing body, that you must obey. Also, if your students must go to a master to be tested when you see fit, it would be a little embarassing to have them failed by someone who is considered an expert in their field. I'm sure someone with a little bit of intelligence and real world knowhow, like the people who should be on a city board would understand this. -
Weapons in TKD?
isshinryu5toforever replied to Hogosha's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Kendo is more forward movement based. In fact, Japanese sword work is all forward movement based. The Okinawan samurai tended to be more stable and more 50/50 in their weight distribution. The Korean sword work of Gum Do has almost all of the weight placed on the back leg. It was kind of like this: The Japanese: Go forward at all costs, never lose the advantage of the attack The Okinawans: Try to be the agressor, but always be ready to move out of the way of an imminent attack. The Koreans: You two can kill eachother, but we're going to get out of here alive. -
Memorization !HELP!
isshinryu5toforever replied to greenbelt_girl15's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Study it a little bit, and then eat the paper. just kidding, You just need to read that stuff over and over. There isn't much else you can do. You can read it out lout, write it down by yourself, etc. Any study habits you have for school, you can use. It's basically the same. -
Some would call me a stupid man, But regret is the worst way to feel. So, with fear in my heart I began, I told you my heart was made of steel until you looked into my eyes. I didn't say how I felt for the longest time. I couldn't keep up the guise, Your beauty makes me rhyme. Even if you reject my request, I can live with the choice I've made. I'll still wish you all the best, My feelings might someday fade. You wouldn't be the first to hurt my heart, With that said I'll now depart.

A probably common, but hard to deal with situation.
isshinryu5toforever replied to Kieran-Lilith's topic in General Chat
No she cut contact with the ex. Otherwise why would she change e-mails and go through all that trouble? You are just 15 remember this. Your mind and hormones run at two different speeds male or female. You might have to sit back and let your mind catch up, and this is about the only time I would say make a rational decision using just and only your brain. I am usually one of those go with what your heart tells you people, but in this instance I would let your logical thought process take over a little more. Good luck, and if you want to chat I'm free. -
my family hunts for deer, bear, and assorted small game. We also fish. We do it for the meat. I have to say the Reminton .280 is a good gun as is the .308, the good 'ole Winchester 30-30 is a classic, likeable gun as well.

that's pretty good, but I've got an even better one there is kind of a chain of schools where I live called Karate North Tae Kwon Do, isn't that a good one?

I think we tend to forget that the measure of a man is not in whether he can beat another man with his fists, but if he can defeat that man with his heart. There is a man who is a good friend of our dojo, and he can do the Bruce Lee 1 inch punch and break 6 bricks, but he would never hit you. He could talk you to death before he would punch you one time. For him, it is not whether he can hit you hard enough for you to give up, but whether he can get you to give up without having to hit you. I understand what your point is about being able to compete, but you must understand what the belt is representative of. As I've said before there is a man who I saw at every tournament who was about 65 years old maybe older. He stayed a brown belt for an extremely long time, but when he finally earned his black belt he was the happiest person I'd ever seen. They presented it to him in a ceremony between the black belt and colored belt competitions. I have almost never seen a harder worker in my life. To say he didn't deserve that belt for all the work and dedication he put into his martial arts would be wrong. I have seen many people who are more physically talented than he is, but I have seen few of those people who would be willing to stay a brown belt for over 3 years. You can't just look at the outward physical tools someone has, because the measure of a man is in his heart. It isn't in his arm or in his leg, it is behind his ribcage.

We have quite a few shotokan people on the board. Before you start worrying about how things will work on the street you must remember that taking up a martial art is a process. It will take you a while before you can truly use what you have learned. Tradition all has to do with the teacher. It is derived from one of Okinawa's older karate lineages Shuri-te I do believe, someone please correct me if I am incorrect. I don't mean to be if I am. Some teachers are big into tradition, while others are a little more "modern" so to speak. It depends on the person.

I can refute that argument only out of personal experience. I was 5 when I began martial arts, and I actually belt tested with the adult class in my first two months. So, it is possible to have a child that is calm enough, and pays enough attention to attend a real karate class. My classes then were 2 hours long. I don't want to hear the McDojo argument either, because I can assure you that this school is most definitely not a McDojo we have kids there who are as old as 10, been there 6 months, still waiting to test. That being said however, these cases may be few and far between. I haven't had many children under the age of 6 in the dojos that I have taught at. I will agree with SS when he says that most of the time the instructor would be babysitting a child under a certain age. It would be good to step back and take an honest look at how your child does at listening, paying attention, and standing still for extended periods of time. Patience is not somethng common among youth, not to knock anyone's kids, but I even find myself drifting sometimes during classes and I'm in college lol. Just consider those few things before you enroll your child in a martial arts school. And good luck in your search.

Greetings from a Brooklyn girl
isshinryu5toforever replied to Danni Girl's topic in Introduce Yourself
I don't know how close you are to McKibben st. but there is an Isshin-Ryu Karate dojo there called Traditional Okinawan Karate. The instructor is a nice guy, and he gives you a two week trial period to see if you enjoy the classes or not. If you want any more info you can google Traditional Okinawan Karate Brooklyn, or maybe you've already contacted him. I have visited there a few times, it's a nice little place. Good luck with your search for a dojo, and it's nice to have you on Karateforums. -
Hero
isshinryu5toforever replied to Dijita's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
This isn't a real Hong Kong action movie. It is a movie that Jet Li has wanted for a long time. It showed that martial arts is about more than just kicking butt. It shows more of the true spirit of martial arts. There aren't many fight scenes, and I will admit I was expecting an entirely different movie, but I was quite happy with the message that Hero conveyed. -
I was trying to use a character with a subpar level of intelligence that people could relate to. I know a story about a man similar to Lennie, he doesn't have violent outbursts but his naivety is his downfall, however it was written in Korea in 1930 something. I didn't figure people would have seen or read this. So, I used Forest Gump.

The rain comes in spring, With it the cherries blossom, This brings my heart joy. Questions Every couple stares at me sardonically Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one alone. They run after moments of fleeting sophomorically, While I seek for love I can own. I miss being able to look into your eyes. They seem to smile softly when you look up at me. I don't want to say our goodbyes, Unless youhear my departing plea. I'll wait for you as long as it takes, Even if you make me wait for months, I'll follow my foolish heart to mistakes. Let's just go out again once. Why do you make me lose my mind? And why is love so unkind? If you haven't noticed I like to write in sonnet form a lot. Just the rhyme scheme though, I don't stick to any beat rules like iambic pantameter.

HELPPP ASAP PLEASE
isshinryu5toforever replied to xxducati998xx's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
why are you fighting in the first place? That is not what martial arts is for. It is not to pick a fight with some stupid boy. -
I like the fact that someone made an independent film Of Mice and Men with John Malkovich and Gary Sinese.

I don't think I've seen that movie.

Watched a fight last night
isshinryu5toforever replied to cathal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
it's a downblock. The hooking of the arm is a trap, if you really think of application in some of your forms or even with some of your techniques I am sure you'll figure out how it works. Sounds like an unecessary use of force, and besides that by pushing the guy he was the one antagonizing the smaller guy. -
Lennie is a huge physical presence, but it seems to me that Forest is just as simple as Lennie is. He beats up one of Jenny's dates, beats up a guy trying to touch her while she's on stage. He shows tendencies toward violence as well, not as extreme as Lennie of course. Yet, it seems that Gump always finds himself in the right place at the right time so to speak. During his cross country run, during Water Gate, etc. it is odd to make a man such as this have so much success, while a man such as Lennie makes it his downfall.

The title of the book was inspired by a poem by Robert Burns. When I talked about Forest Gump, I was referring to the movie, I don't think there is a book? Anyways, the poem is called: To a Mouse, On Turning Her Up In Her Nest With The Plow I was just making the comparison between Gump and Lennie because it would seem that everyone in America loved Forest Gump, because they like to see a simple guy win. I bet that people would be more hard pressed to sympathize with Lennie, who despite his low mental capacity turns into a killer.

What weapon do you actually carry?
isshinryu5toforever replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
That gun isn't that big. I don't carry weapons, I don't feel they are necessary. The one thing I do know is that anyone who carries the Smith and Wesson Model 500 .50 cal. magnum has too much gun. I don't think anyone on here would, but I know someone who has one. -
I don't know how many on this forum write poetry. We have a literature topic now, so why not have a poetry one as well. If you want to post your own poetry or discuss some feel free to put it up. If am asking other to bear their soul through their writing I may as well begin as not to be hypocritical. You're All Alone Look at the people on the street. They've all got somewhere to go, Someone special to meet, And I sit here all alone. You see no lines in my face, But my age in my eyes, they stare off into space, As my throat lets out soft sighs. I slowly sip my drink, I look into the bottom of the glass. I feel my heart slowly sink. Lonliness makes another pass. I let my mind start to roam, To thoughts that there's no place like home. All Too Lucid How did you fall in love with me? I can see you're the one, I feel your warmth beside my body. I see your beautiful silhouette created by the setting of the sun, I can feel the soft tenderness of your lips, They caress my cheek as I awake. I see the graceful curve of your hips, And the soft lines in the sheets they make. You have beautifully long flowing hair, It shimmers in the sun, Your love is around me everywhere, From you I will never need to run. But isn't this an evil twist, For you my dear do not exist.
