In Isshin-Ryu we have eight open hand katas, but you are expected to examine them beyond belief. From my limited experience with World TKD (Kukkiwon), you learn the Taeguk forms, but you never really learn what you are doing in them. You just know this pattern of techniques. I'm sure there are WTF schools out there who teach in-depth analysis of kata bunkai, but I have yet to see one.

I'm pretty sure those don't exist. The TKD leagues are not part of the NCAA. As for scholarships, use the free scholarship searches, find a few you really like, or that you can write about, and apply for them. The only difficulty there is that they are extremely competitive therefore difficult to earn. But a few hundred here and there is better than nothing.

you need to use your speed. That is the biggest thing you need to figure out. I have been fighting short all my life. I have been small all my life. You have to figure out how to use your speed. Pure and simple. You might want to get onto a strength and conditioning regmine as well.

Kids and martial arts
isshinryu5toforever replied to Goju_boi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
parents always want their kids to be active in some sort of physical thing. The kids watch martial arts movies and cartoons, what are they going to want to do? So, mom and dad let them do martial arts. Kids are like the bread and butter of most martial arts schools, that's where they make all their money. -
DVD release dates

You can get Ong Bak from us.yesasia.com right now, but it will be a VCD from Hong Kong. Elektra no clue, and honestly I'm not too concerned with that one. Soon probably though as it wasn't a massive boxoffice smash. Blade Trinity my best guess is sometime in October or November. Probably around that Haloween time when people start looking for stuff like that. -

I think Unleashed will be a little different kind of movie too, a little more in the Hero vain. If you look at the way it's set up, he's been treated like an animal, and then he meets a blind piano turner who teaches him to be human. I don't think there are going to be as many fight scenes in this one either, but the ones they have will be quality. -
Truman Capote is good. He wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's right? You know Neil LaBute is good too. He's pretty dark though. His one act play series bash:Latterday plays is good. If you don't know who he is he did the play and movies Your Friends and Neighbors. The movie had Ben Stiller in it, if you still have no idea who he is then I don't think I can help you. lol

Spoilers here as well, because it is in reference to what is said above. Fitzgerald believed himself a failure within his own lifetime, so it could be taken that Gatsby is a bit of Fitzgerald himself. Also, when you examine the time period that the piece was written in it wasn't really a time of great dreams. People lived and died in a mechanical way. They got up, went to work, came home, ate dinner, went to sleep, did it all over again. So, to Fitzgerald there wasn't really a good way to look at things. His father failed at his jobs and the family eventually just lived off of his mother's inherritance. How could Fitzgerald see himself as a success? His father was a failure so he was a failure too. In actuality most thought he would fade into literary obscurity. So, others viewed him as a failure too. Fitzgerald definitely didn't have a bright and shiny outlook on life.

lol, I was just picking an option that is lucrative. I dunno, business school whatever, a lot of grad students are jerks. There are some very nice ones, but there are some that just stick out as people you don't really want to aquaint with. Maybe a teaching degree with an acting degree? I dunno, but any way you slice it you need another plan of action.

Shin Koyamida was able to step right in too, but as stated above that is extremely rare. You're still in high school take part in the school plays. You have to figure out if you really love acting. If you figure out you do, then when applying for colleges consider those with strong acting programs. New York University and the University of Southern California both have strong film and acting programs. Just remember acting is one of those things you either make it in or you don't. So, I'd have a back up plan ready just in case like double majoring in Theatre and English and then considering grad school or law school. Too many people focus only on acting and end up wearing nametags and asking do you want fries with that for a long time before a real job comes along.

I like Fist of Legend a lot. The first Once Upon a Time in China was good too. Hero has been hailed as great and as being mediocre. I didn't love Hero for the fight scenes, I loved it for the message. This was a film that was meant to show a more true spirit of the warrior. It wasn't made to showcase great stunts and action. If I want non-stop fights, I'll go see Fist of Legend or Ong Bak. If I want a martial arts movie with a deeper meaning I'll see Hero. -
In Isshin-Ryu Chinto is the 5th kata you learn. This would make you a green belt or so.

how much a month?
isshinryu5toforever replied to jimmyprince's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am only on the TKD team right now, so I don't pay. My instructor back home hasn't made me pay either. As far as I know his rates haven't changed much in the last 10 years, so it's about 35 a month for one person, $50 for two, and then I think 20 a person/month if you sign up a family of 3 or more. I can't be quoted on those prices though if someone happens to stumble upon his dojo, because I honestly haven't had to pay dues in a long long time. -
Isshin-Ryu has 8 open hand katas. 5 of them are from Shorin-Ryu, 2 of them from Goju-Ryu, and one was created by the founder. Sanchin and Seisan kata are two very old katas that are in the system. All of the katas but the one that was created by Shimabuku have a fairly long history.

Isshin-Ryu is a great style of martial arts. lol, I can't say that without being biased. I have been doing it since I was 5, I am 19 now, so if that's any indication on how much I like it. It is a fairly easy system to learn, because there isn't a massive amount of stuff to it. It is a very solid system, and a good base if you want to spread from it. So, give it a shot. I'm sure you'll have fun.

most of the reels I have, you can turn the handle either way lol, alright, but back to the topic. In point sparring, i don't think lefties hold any distinct advantage. In something like boxing lefties can throw off the timing of their opponents jab. This holds less true in kickboxing where the legs are involved too. I have seen the timing thing work in boxing because a lot of the lefties I've known have a heavy punch from their left hand, so they just try to disturb the timing of the jab of the other fighter by jabbing at the same time to set up their reverse punch.

Coka-a-Cola and other soft drinks?
isshinryu5toforever replied to ckd-student's topic in Health and Fitness
I quit drinking soda a long time ago. I have had maybe 2 or 3 in the last 5 years. Coke used to be my favorite pop though. Dr. Pepper was up there too. The fact that there are no health benefits to it though, and that it costs money, were factors in me giving it up. I can't really say whether I feel better since I don't drink it or not, since I quit when I was about 14. -
Eurotrip was funny. "Hey, dude, here's a fun fact. You made out with your sister!"

Bow hunting is very fun, and can be a challenge. It gets kind of funny though when my dad is so good at it he can go out in his work cloths, a gray uniform basically, be in the woods 10-15 minutes and have a deer. I actually arrowed a turkey, that's difficult. Sorry Davison I don't have any Buddhist leanings. My dad has a shirt that says, "There's a place for all God's creatures....Right next to potatoes and gravy" That'll kinda tell you what my family is like.

SPRING BREAK !!!!! WOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!
isshinryu5toforever replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Chat
Some people had Spring break last week (me) or this week. Everyone has spring break at different times. I can say that for my spring break I stayed on campus in NYC. It's funny, because I'm already here while some people come here for their break. -
I'm not so keen on coffee. It has never appealed to me, the taste, everything. I will stick to tea.
