common mistakes in sparring
AnonymousOne replied to CTpizzaboy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think you missed the point -
I began boxing at age 7. My brother was a successful school boy boxing champion and got me involved. Where we trained there was also in another part of the building a Jujitsu School. I was fascinated by it. I watched many times but never got involved. At age 17 our Karate school set up a dojo in our suburb. I went and watched and was deeply impressed. This was around 1975. The training was brutal and extremely hard. Being an asthmatic I found it very hard. But in time my body got stronger and I handled the training well. For me I started training purely for the ability to fight. I also thought it would be cool if everyone knew I was a Black Belt in Karate. 27 years later I train for very different reasons. Today I train to keep purpassing my levels of fitness, speed, strength, power and so on. I simply train to see how good I can get and to apply creative ideas to my training schedule. Self defense naturally comes with training but its not a goal at all anymore. I sorted out my ability to defend myself many years ago. I have a written training schedule and my goal is to constantly add and refine to it. My quest is perfection of what I can personally do. _________________ Karate begins and ends with courtesy [ This Message was edited by: AnonymousOne on 2002-02-27 21:35 ]

If your Kata and Basics are good, your sparring should also be good. -

We did 3, 2 hour training sessions per day. We developed our own programme based on an analysis of their needs which we got before hand. -

I had a great week training. Unusual for me to to be paid for my time in martial arts these days. The obstacle course provided great agility training and it was great to be 45 and out perform these high spirited 25 yr olds!! Out main emphasis was on unarmed combat, throws, holds, and strikes that would likely lead to death. Also defense against knife attacks in particular. We also lectured on modern fitness techniques, setting and achieving fitness goals and using weights, attitudes in training and plyometric exercises to enhance performance. -

Yes Karate and weapon defence -
I just got back from a week of teaching and training with the Special Forces here (SAS). I was asked by my Sensei to assist. What a pile of paper work he had to through. Since 11-9 things have tightened up and before we could go they did back ground checks etc. They have never don this before. Anyway it was a great week being with the elite of the Army and these are true warriors. Many of course I had never met before and of course they viewed us as civilians until they experienced the extent of our knowledge in unarmed combat. These guys are incredibly fit, strong and tough and several tried us on, especially my Sensei (9th Dan). He may be 61 but he soon put these younger whipper snappers in their place. We trained them in many aspects. But when it came to learning some Kata they were somewhat negative about its effectiveness until the movements were broken down and applied in actual combat. After this their attitudes changed. I also enjoyed being allowed to go through their obstacle courses. I think that is excellent training and if any have access to this, I would highly recommend it. I also noticed out of training these guys are somewhat quiet and reserved. Interesting. I will come back to this later and tell you more about what happened, it was quiet funny sometimes. Gotta get to work now...

Thats a hard one. Today people refer to traditional Karate as the non-contest side of it. But the Okinawan Schools would say they are more traditional than Japanese Schools. Seeing Karate has evolved so much how can we say we are doing the traditional things? We are certainly not practising karate in the tradition of say Sagukawa did in the 1700's

Chidokan. Chidokan Karate is a Japanese based Karate School in Nippori Tokyo. Chidokan is a derivative of Shotokan and looks only slightly different. Kancho Sasaki 10th Dan trained under Gichin Funakoshi for many many years. He later formed his own school in Nippori Tokyo in about 1957 after Funakoshi's death. It has been said that Sasaki has great influence with the Japan Karate Association. Sasaki is in fact senior to all the current JKA heads and instructors Chidokan's main differences with other schools are: * Low deep stances, probably the lowest in the art for strong leg development * Tidiness in performance of technique * Extremely hard training * Very strict discipline (Army boot camp type of attitude) * Emphasis on power, speed and particularly focus * Traditional Karate although Kumite and Kata contests are held * Practical self defence. High kicking and jump kicks are reserved for only the most senior of grades Chidokan is little known outside of Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Respectfully I would disagree with that. A trained fighter in my experience trains to expect anything and everything. If they are not doing this then obviously their training has a huge hole in it and they are not that skilled after all.

Not quite the turn around u might have thought...

I understand your feelings of frustration. I am will not judge you on drinking I can only hope you can learn from the experience. All I am saying is that you obviously need to ask yourself some deep and sincere questions and hopefully the answers will come. Your problem is not with me its with yourself. I am not going to comment on my degree of skill because this is the internet and anyone can blow hot air. I will say that there are many many martial artists who would have easily escaped (assuming they were sober and I think most good marital artists would avoid drinking and fighting from my experience). All I am hoping you will do is redouble your efforts to train and never have this happen again. I say this out of concern not an attempt to put you down. My son had a similar problem when he was 8, not drinking though obviously, and was beaten up at school. It was at that point that he decided to start training. At around age 14 he really started taking the training seriously when he saw the benefits. Now at age 19 he is becoming a highly skilled young man. Of course he has been training 11 odd years now. I do my best to encourage him If my words came across as condescending that was not my purpose and I am sorry you took it that way. I was only trying to encourage you to train hard and use this situation as an imputus to greater heights. Back in 1975 I had a very hard Sensei. I had difficulty doing a particular stance and because I worked night shift back then I paid for private lessons. He worked the hell out of me on that stance. After training I was talking to him about it and he said these words that I will never forget. "Its problems like this that will make you or break you, so what will it be?". I was angry with him most of the time because he was really hard on me. But in time I soon saw he had my best interests at heart. His severity was really kindness. -
In Okinawa they have one set of names and in mainland Japan they have another hmmmm
