  1. I practice a derivative of Shotokan called Chidokan that was developed by Kancho Sasaki (a direct student of Funakoshi)immediately upon Funakoshi's death prior to all the changes to Shotokan in 1958 and onward. The difference's to other schools are: * Low deep stances, probably the lowest in the art for strong leg development * Tidiness in performance of technique * Extremely hard training * Very strict discipline (Military style) * Emphasis on power, speed and particularly focus * Traditional Karate although Kumite and Kata contests are held * Practical self defence. High kicking and jump kicks are reserved for only the most senior of grades Its one of the toughest schools I have ever seen _________________ Soft teachers make soft students [ This Message was edited by: AnonymousOne on 2002-04-11 01:37 ]
  2. I am into a Shotokan derivative, but I know many Goju students and I know all of the Kata. Its a wonderful school!!
  3. Kata is life long training. I have been training constantly for over 28 years now. Do I think theres too many Kata? No I dont at all. As for remembering them, what you learn with pain you never forget. These days I take a Kata and spend 2 years dedicated to that exclusively (outside the Dojo). The 3 Tekki Kata are quite different. Never judge a book by its cover.
  4. When the going gets tough, the tough get going What happened to that?
  5. The fitter you are the faster you will recover
  6. In Funakoshi's autobiography you will read that Shotokan came from Shuri te (including Tomari Te) and Naha te. Its a mix of both schools. You will see some of the Nahe schools forms in Shotokan at an advanced level, albeit somewhat modified
  7. Dont eat what you know you shouldnt eat. Eat between 1000-1200 calories a day only Exercise like crazy Simple
  8. The depth and application of Kata in Shotokan is truly indepth and deep. I just finished working on Gojushiho Sho after 2 years of constant work. Its the only Kata I have worked on accept what I was made to do in the dojo, in that 2 years. It has so many applications its amasing. Now in my Kata sessions I am working on Meikyo. I will hone that for 2 years. They are like a map with where you cant see the actual end, but its an exciting journey
  9. Many woman prefer a man to look after her, they find this romantic. Nothing wrong with that
  10. The makiwara is designed to develop a number of things. First one can practise a multitude techniques. Most striking and kicking techniques. One learns how to apply power and focus. One learns to develop hand eye coordination. It strengthens the joints of the wrist and elbow and harden the hands. If one is only out to harden the hands then I believe the focus is wrong. One learns to hit a hard contact and experience full contact at full power. No it doesnt not move and sometimes your sparring partner does not move either. I agree learning to hit a moving target is also a good idea. I believe the Makiwara has many benefits and should I not believe this I would have not used one for 28 years. If you dont think any particular piece of equipment is of value to you, then dont use it. Thats called free choice. I will however point out that the Makiwara has been used by Masters for hundreds of centuries and from many different schools and styles. Funny that. The great ones still keep using it. As for me, I continue to use it. Creativeness can make makiwara work very beneficial in my opinion. But its all about personal preferences
  11. Is flexibility a measurement of well rounded fighting ability in Martial Arts?
  12. Tell him to go spar with Horoshi Kanazawa (All Japan Champ 3 years in a row and 10th Dan)and see if that changes his mind
  13. When two humans have two different goals there paths soon part. My sweet heart completely understands my training because we have had heart to hearts about it. She supports me in my training because she truly understands what it means to me. In other words, she loves me enough on this issue to encourage me in my goals as I do in hers. Thats real love you know. Caring about what is important to the other half and not caring about self. When I go running at 6am every morning she comes cycling. When I start basics at 7am she is getting my breakfast ready. When I work out with weights or plyometric exercises she is there too getting fit herself. When I want to run in the countryside over hills, she drives me out and takes a good book and waits. When I go to the dojo she comes and watches. Why? 1. Because she cares about what is important to me 2. She knows I pay as much attention to her needs also. 3. Real love is recognised and cherished 4. The other is willing to make a sacrfice for the other and vice versa 5. We both recognise that achievemenyt of personal goals is infinately accelerated by the support of the other. 6. We have the want for the other to grow and reach out to what is really important. 7. At the end of the day there is much joy when we both know we have exerted a 100% effort in attaining our goals in conjunction with the help of the other. There is nothing better than saying to your spouse at the end of the day "I was great today in working my plans and it was greatly assisted by you, thankyou Darling". Thats real love to me. Anything less is an incompatiable love. What I want from my relationship is what I can give. And if we give the laws of nature show we shall receive. "whatever a man soweth, this he will also reap". Think about that. To me thats deep! You want a good relationship? Communicate and express your feelings and desires to the other in a quiet manner. Always be a listener. Care about their needs more than your own. Have joint goals as well as personal goals. Be open and honest and agree both of you will be honest and always open, make that commitment verbally to each other. Always agree to talk issues through quietly and recognise tempers dont change problems, but only listening and finding sensible solutions. Refuse to discuss things if you are angry, wait until you are calm. When communicating on an issue that you disagree. Dont be accusational. Instead of saying "You are this way and its wrong, its not fair etc etc" Try, "I understand how you feel and you do make a very good point and I am glad you bought it up however I seem to be looking at its slightly differently namely ........., if you feel I am wrong can we discuss it quietly to examine it fully?" You will be amased if you take that approach. Dont attack the attack, side step, roll with the punch, reposition and go back in effectively. Sound farmiliar? All in all be a giver and not a taker. If she/he is a taker and not a giver, you have some soul searching as well and some communicating to do. _________________ Soft teachers make soft students [ This Message was edited by: AnonymousOne on 2002-04-01 02:05 ]
  14. Its a very good idea to build yourself up to be able to do an exercise for three minutes at a time, as boxers do. This is a good way to build your anaerobic capabilities.
  15. I have been training in a Shotokan derivitive for 41 years now. Its basically almost the same as Shotokan except for some basic excercises and very minor variations in Kata
  16. I have been in direct sales for 22 years
  17. I dont drink at all. To me booze is a demon in a bottle LOL
  18. I would like to learn Vulcan "mind melding"
  19. My most difficult week of training was at a Gasshuku in Japan when I studied in Japan for a year in 1982. We did 42 hours of incredibly hard training in one week. I wasnt as strong and fit then as I am now, but it burned a deep memory with me ie pain!!

  21. Tae Bo is a poor attempt to commercial martial arts. The techniques are poor, the instruction is poor and the workouts are too easy. Its a game, not real martial arts
  22. Bon how did those jumping exercises go?
  23. One could condition themselves to break without ever having learned any martial art. Breaking is not a good measure of skill at all. Bruce Lee said "Boards dont fight back" How true.
  24. Our school doesnt teach jumps kicks until at least San Dan level
  25. 45, training since age 8
