  1. kyokushin_coe, that was an amazing post, are you a writer? I would have to agree with everything you are saying like we are fighting with ourselves. For example, when, lets say we are running, for exercise, people tend to quit really fast. We are not actually tired, but our mind is telling us to stop. We need to get past that first ten minutes before our body is in the rhythm. But we all do need our mind sometimes to motivate us as well. For example, if you have to mentality to be the BEST, then like you said, nothing that anyone will say will stop you or anything. It is what you think of yourself before you think you are the best, or has overcome your goals. Once someone has the ability to control their mind, that is when they truly start learning, and maybe that is what Black Belt is, a control of not only the physical aspect of your body, but the mental aspect of your body/mind. I cannot say for sure if this is true about Black Belt because I am far from it, but I hope I will have harmony between my self and mind with lots of practice and of course, time.
  2. Well maybe I should not call it an addiction, but a life style change. Now that I have started MA, I have been eating healthier, getting more exercise in and out of class, being happier and really so far there are no negative effects to MA. I know as I get older I might be sort of "targeted" because people might think, "Hey he does MA, but I can beat him up, Watch." So far I have kind of kept in on the low because I do not want this to happen. Conflict with my studies? No not yet, this has maybe even motivated me a bit more, even though I do pretty well in school already, but my parents would pull me out of MA if my grades started to suffer. Anyways, I am learning more by researching and stuff on MA. Actually the only negative effect that maybe MA had done to me is I always want to practice. Like for instance when I am with my parents and they are talking to someone, I try to only stand on one foot, and sometimes I lost balance so I kind of look stupid.
  3. WOW, I am reading everyons post and they say they train like 10 hours, or even 25-30 hours a week (Muaythaiboxer). This would be awesome for me, I would love to train that much, right no I train about 3-4 hours a week, and it is NOT enough lol, but I am still a yellow belt so hopefully as I become a better Martial Artist, I will be able to train in the dojo more often. My parents thought MA was just going to be a fad. I had to decide I wanted to do MA, then wait a long time because my parents didn`t want me to loose interest. I decided I wanted to start MA last summer when I saw my cousin and his friend sparring, then they taught me a few things. I had to nag my parents until the end of November before I could start lol. The wait was definetly worth it. I think they almost expect me to stop traning when I get older, but I never will. I also think they are getting a bit annoyed because I always seen to be talking about it to them, they history, different applications, and they do not understand any of it lol. Oh well. I do not know if I want to open a dojo yet, I mean I would like to, but maybe in 15 years something will happen. People kind of look at me weird when I say that MA is a HUGE part of my life and I want to always do it. Well I will stop my little rant and maybe come back later and see if anyone replied...
  4. Congrads !! That is awesome. You must feel like an awesome person right now, and I respect you for trying your hardest, and you too have an open mind to read these forums and look at things from another point of view. I am sure you deserved your rank, and good luck in the future, this is only the beginning.
  5. First and foremost, what style of Martial Arts do you do? How old are you? Do you have any experience?
  6. I totally agree ^^^
  7. Here a wack of Programs you can do.... http://www.terminalvertical.com/programs.html I do not think Air Alert III is there, but that is one you shoudl check out.
  8. What exactly do you mean by sword style? Do you mean like an art such as Iaido or Kendo, or a type of sword such as a katana or Wakizashi. Even did you mean like a samurai sword vs a sword vikings used, or Euros used?
  9. I do not practice Aikido, but hopfully in the future. Anyways, good luck with your your classes, and I am sorry to hear about the terrible accident with your fiancee. I am sure you will do fine, and you might want to ask your new instructor about books/vids for more learning material. I am also sure a simple search of google will give you loads of information..
  10. I am quite sure that if you do join an illegeal fight club then you have failed at everyhting your sensei has taught you...
  11. Shihan calls you up, bow, then walk to him. Turn around and go on one knee while you take your belt off. You fold your belt so it is neat, turn around, receive your new belt, hand shake, everyone clapping, bow, and go back in the line. I think thats it.
  12. Thanks everyone for your post, w00t for the MA addicts lol.
  13. Amen lol ^^^^^^ W00t !!!, Totally agree with you
  14. I am one of those people that go through different "phases" of things such as golfing, skateboarding etc... And I never stuck to any of them. ( I am sure everyone has had those). Anyways its been almost a year (sort of) and I still love MA. I hope that this isn’t a long phase, but I do not think it is. I am pretty sure I will stick to it forever . After I got my yellow belt I was so happy because I could start to spar, and it is amazing. I cannot wait till I start learning weapons as well (it will be a while though). I have seen some people do kanku dai and it is so sweet, I cannot wait to learn it, but for now I will stick with Heian Shodan/Nidan lol. There was a kind of demo I saw and one of the students did kanku dai while saying all the 20 precepts of Mr. Funakoshi, it was really something. I would have to definitely agree with you, because you can put MA in everything. You can incorporate it in everything. I think I like it alot because it is mentally and physically challenging, and you grow as a person, learn to be humble, respect others and always do your best. There is also so much history you can read about and learn from and I think the biggest thing is that you can never perfect a kata, but you always want ot try. For example, after you think you have a good front stance, like you have just fixed all the major points that have been suggested to you, you then find a million other things wrong with your stance. I really like the strive for perfection. Everyone at the dojo is so nice and helpful. It is such a positive environment where you can forget that you have a huge project due the next day, or you are in trouble at home, and just concentrate on MA. Good luck with the future of your MA. Thanks for everyone else’s post, and I agree with everything/most of the things you are saying.
  15. Hello KF Since I started Shotokan, for about 8 months now (wow it went by fast), all I can think about is Martial Arts. It is really all I can think about I always just want to go to class and learn/practice MA. I don’t mean this like an addiction/obsession where I don’t eat or sleep, or my grades are going bad in school, actually it is actually quite opposite. I was wondering if the MA addiction goes down a bit as I progress, or does it get even bigger as I get more experienced, wiser, older etc…I hope I never loose this urge to always want to do MA because I think it helps we improve a lot, and I am reading a lot about the history, and just learning a lot more. I don’t know if anyone feels this way, well actually I know a few people that do, and just being on these forums you have to have some kind of dedication to your MA because you keep coming back. Are the most of you addicted to Martial Arts? Sorry about the long post, and thanks for reading it. P.S. Just as a side note, when I type MA, I mean Martial Arts Thanks, Ncole_91
  16. Hey, congratulations I know what it feels like to get your first stripe as I started karate not too long ago, and I remember when I got my 1st stripe I felt like "the man" and I was on top of the world. As you keep progressing you will become more and more proud of your self. In 6 months you will also look back and think how easy the first stripe requirements were, but you earned it now and it was I am sure pretty difficult.
  17. There are all teached at the same same dojo, Iaido/Jodo and Kendo. Iaido REALLY interesting, even though I am just starting, and I am trying a Kendo Class and Jodo this week hopefully.
  18. Karate 4 x 1 hour/week Iaido 2.5 hours/week Kendo 3.5 - 4.75 hours/week Jodo 1.5 hours/week I do Karate for sure, and I am starting Iaido/Jodo and hopefully kendo aswell, these are just the practices that I can go to, but I will try to get to all/most of them.
  19. Yeah, I have to agree with you on that one. Its like when my sister gets hurt, but she doesn't notice and keeps on playing, then when someone points it out, she starts whining because it hurts. Its happened to me before, I always have bruises and some cuts that I never knew I had, I mean they don't hurt hen I notice them because the "pain stage" would have been gone. I do not know if this post even made sense to the reader’s lol.
  20. There is a reason for the edit button lol Anyways, I would probably just try to do a kick to the groin with my front leg so I do not get too close, and then run if the attacker hesitates to run after me because of the pain. Probably anything to the knee or groin, I do not want to get too too close.

    The BEST

Well everything, the three Ks, Kihon, Kata and Kumite, you want to be a well rounded MA, not just good at one thing, then bad at another thing. Do not just practice the easy things, when you are practicing roundhouse kicks, you might have to spend more time on your bad leg. It will be worth it.
  24. Congrats Sensei Solo /bow

    The BEST

Well, there is a secret, but don’t tell anyone else, it would Practice. I mean there is alot of other aspects, such as concentration, but all fails without lots of hours of practice with blood, sweat and tears to be the best.
