  1. here is the end result of too much board breaking... http://www.fighttraining.com/fight_clips/keepbanging.avi What does this have to do with self-defense?
  2. The confidence is built up everytime we see a Muay Thai fighter win. Everytime Muay Thai is used in MMA, the ring or in the street and prevails (which is often, as far as striking). Repetition, bag and pad work is used to build skill and power. We don't like to build up a false sense of security by breaking in-animate objects.
  3. Come prove your "Chi" power to this idiot. I'm not even talking about fighting. Come over here and burn me with your hand, I'll let ya. Or you can knock me out with a touch, I'll just stand here and let you do it. Use your chi energy to make yourself immobile and I'll see if I can or cannot move you. Little tests that won't hurt anyone, come and face the challenge, prove it to me and then I'll believe.
  4. I feel that they type of competitions that we participate in at my schools are very easily turned into self-defense techniques. We're allowed to grapple, punch, kick below the belt (but not groin), knee, elbow and headbutt. So to modify to self defense is very easy for our system.
  5. Like I said before.. what's the point of breaking boards? I know that they cut the boards so that you break it WITH the grain.. that doesn't show power, that just shows precision in breaking a board. Bones don't have that type of grain. So what's the point? Breaking a baseball bat.. now that's impressive, although the crying afterwards isn't.
  6. I saw scorpion kung fu in a cheesy movie once. The 5 deadly venoms... I still think it's a load of BS. Whatever, just challenge your friend to a friendly sparring match and see if he has anything to offer.
  7. It may have a long history, but i'm not talking about history, i'm talking about today. I've seen plenty of San Shou to see that they are borrowing techniques from Muay Thai. It's great though, that just means they are still evolving. Hey, us Thaiboxers are hiring western boxers to teach us how to punch more efficiently, we don't hide it, we flaunt it. We are evolving our art. The thai people may have originated from parts of china and brought some "kung fu" with them, but it has evolved on it's own to become something totally different. Time has a way of changing things.
  8. OH yea, I like my head and face, so i keep my hand up high to protect it, while at the same time my elbows are down and in to protect my body.
  9. I think the best weapon is a knife. You can carry one virtually anywhere and it has so many uses. It is a very fast weapon and doesn't take power to do it's job, which is to stab and cut. The knife is the weapon which holds most repect from me. This weapon is the most practical in today's society. Now.. If I lived in a sword weilding society, my weapon of choice would be two swords, a long and a short, like Daishi. Daishi is a Katana and Wakazashi, it's a really nasty combo to deal with.
  10. I tend to be very sceptical of anyone that claims to have anything more than 3rd Dan. I've seen too many posers out there that just think they are soo cool because they are 5th dan and such and turn out to be total goons. So for me, the higher the rank.. the less serious I take them. Maybe it's just because I live in the USA where anyone can call themselves a black-belt.
  11. That's just what I said, didn't I? Anyway, the San Shou practitioners are using Muay Thai techniques anyway and just adding throws. So basically it's China vs Thailand.. not Muay Thai vs San Shou. Since San Shou is just a modified Muay Thai.
  12. It was ok.... I think the movie should've ended much earlier.. the whole alien thing in the future just made the movie longer. Ending the movie underwater would've been a cool ending.. leaving the movie just plain creepy.
  13. It seems to me that the sword is the general all-purpose weapon. But pole-arms are another weapons that foot soldiers can use to fight from behind the line or to keep an enemy at distance. When you have a team of fighters, the swordfighters can fight in melee while a spear from your teammate can help you out against the opponent. Polearms are a better choice against a mounted opponent too. There are all types of reasons for the use of different weapons, you just have to think a little bit about it. You must also realize that swords were pretty expensive to make and wood was a much more abundant resource.
  14. That's funny.. alot of SEALS that I've grappled with won't tap for a choke.. they will just pass out thinking that they have 2 minutes of lung capacity to fight with...... they don't realize till after i wake them up and tell them that I was cutting off blood to the head so it only takes about 15 seconds at the most. They are some tuff mutha's though.
  15. How about... LSS -Laser Skin Surgery.... we get rid of SCARS!! ?
  16. Hmm.. what will the rules be? Takedown AND elbow/knee techniques? That is the only fair way to do it. I feel the San Shou guys will only win fights with the takedown and the Thai boxers will dominate the striking.
  17. Actually.. you'll never find a SCARS tape for under 20 bucks.. they are priced around 60 each. A 4 day seminar costs 5000 dollars. They are really after the high rolling business men.
  18. We only say street because it's easier than saying.." In a house, bar, car, mall, baseball park, hotel, phonebooth fight..." Street fight just gives a common terminology for a real life, no rules, fight for your life type of fight.
  19. Nope, i don't care for football or basketball. I'll watch an occasional hockey game. Team sports are very boring to me, I like combatives.
  20. Watch the language, Angus.. we don't need profanity in this forum.. there are lots of kids here too. As for sport TKD.. I won't comment on the effectiveness of the art, I just will say that it isn't fun for me to watch. I have more enjoyment watching a boxing or Muay Thai event.
  21. The famous SCARS institute, a 20,000 square foot combat center is located in Phoenix, AZ. Well, since I live near there I decided to go check it out. IT DOESN"T EXIST!! I went there all there was was a manufacturing company called STS, I called the phone number and it is not in service.. I think alot of people were scammed hard-core. Wow!
  22. He is this weeks "radio martial arts" guest. History is in the article.
  23. oh yea, you need to square up the hips before throwing an effective Muay Thai round kick, otherwise you will throw all your power to the wind. Also, the more square stance lets you use all of your weapons more readily than just the lead side weapons.
  24. Of course we wear protective gear when sparring. When they actually compete though, the only protective gear is a cup, mouthpiece and boxing gloves. I guess you stand a little like Muay Thai with your hips facing forward. Kickboxing stances vary alot since it is a competition that many different types of martial arts have taken to. Muay Thai stances don't vary all that much.
