knocking sense into a person!
scottnshelly replied to pineapple's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sounds like this "Instructor" needs to be taught a lesson... Maybe everyone in the class should knock of his headgear and punch him. -
somebody yells comments at you

Sorry if this is a little late, but this looked like the perfect place to tell this story: Once a couple years back, i was walking through the local 'mall' with my wife when a group of 12 alleged gangsters started calling us names. We ignored them. When we came back by them, they did it again. My wife recognized one of them as her cousin, so we approached in a friendly manner and started talking to him. One of them also recognized me as a Martial Artists so we started talking about that. We all ended up walking outside together. Most had calmed down and were completely passive when i approached friendly-like. Two or three persisted with the name calling. Since Martial Arts had already been brought up, i told the naysayers to come to the class that night and prove me wrong. Gave them all directions and the time, none showed and none ever said anything negative toward me again. Moral is: just be nice. these guys don't have anything against you personally, they are just trying to make themselves feel better by making you feel worse. If you have to talk to them, find a common topic, dont' be threatening. -
I used to compete and was in decent shape. I took about 4 years off, to work on the mental aspect of what I had been learning. Now I’m ready to start getting back in shape. The thing is, I don’t have time to go to the gym and I only have one eight pound dumb bell (long story why I only have one). I know the basic stuff - crunches, push-ups, cardio, etc. my question to you is, what else can I be doing with no weights or one 8# dumb bell that I’m not already doing to get in shape? I don’t have any real goals, just to get overall strength and stuff. Thanks.

Update: I went in and talk to the owner this evening. He said that they all studied Tai Chi in school. I asked him to teach me, he said it had been a long time, but he'd tell his friend in China to send him some books about it. What kinda troubles me is that he didn't know the word Kenpo. I've always been told that Kenpo was Chinese and was very popular there, even used by law enforcement. Maybe they call it by something different there?

Well, i was talking to a buddy of mine about this the other day. He asked if i was willing to put a wager on it, so we bet a dollar. He went and asked and the cashier/owner said that where they grew up Kung Fu was a requirement for phys ed. then all three of the guys continued their training after they graduated so all three are fluent in Kung Fu. I'll be going in there this evening and i'll try to make conversation with them about it. Just wanted to post a follow up to this, thanks for all the advise on this. Also, these guys speak very poor English, how should i ask what style of Kung Fu to where they will understand me?

...During deer season your dojo doubles as a weigh-in station. ...Everyone in the class is on meth ...Your dojo has a can of grease remover in the bathroom ...You've ever used any Martial Art technique to remove a stuck oil filter

scottnshelly replied to scottnshelly's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Great, thanks. what about the plot? -
Has anyone seen this new movie called Ong-Bak? The previews look awesome. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ongbak/

I'm from Oklahoma, so i've actually seen some of these, especially the copenhagen one. i wish i could add some, but i don't know what's not redneck! Does everyone else listen to country music while warming up or doing musical katas?

pray mantis
scottnshelly replied to JKDkid2's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
The style shouldn't matter as much as the fighter. If you notice weaknesses in what your Instructor teaches you, adapt them to make them stronger. I've never studied Praying Mantis (or even witnessed a real practitioner) but i can't imagine someone studying any style for a long time and being a poor fighter. good luck with it. -
What weapon do you actually carry?
scottnshelly replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I carry a viscious dog in my pocket, a bear trap, a shovel to dig large holes, a little kid's spider man toy that i managed to fill with pepper spray, walking cane, shoe strings, pocket knife, one of those vietnamese looking hats with razor blades in the bill, a ferret, a hammer, night vision goggles, escrima, one of those small battery powered personal fans and a battle axe. i don't carry all of these at the same time of course, that would just be ridiculous. -
I've been to the USTU Junior Olympics a few years back. it was in Orlando, FL. One of the qualifications was a spelling test... Looks like you got some work to do!

I'm honored to see that i made someone's signature! And i thought no one read that post! i sulked for days because no one replied with one of those smiley faces or a "lol" or "lmao"...

Not related to anyone famous, but my Instructor was a body guard to Garth Brooks for a while. I have my picture with Jhoon Ree, John Chung, Superfoot, and more. Oh there was one guy that had somehting to do with the Mortal Kombat movie that was at a tournament in Las Vegas that i was at. I talked to him and gave him our business card (my family's Dojo).

I wouldn't call it a 'Female weapon' either. The only time i've ever seen one in action was a form done by a male. What else would you consider a 'Female weapon'?

Why do you have to fight for a black belt??
scottnshelly replied to yireses's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My first Black Belt test - Jr. Black in American Tae Kwon Do - was about 3 hours long, ending in sparring. 15 rounds alternating between point and continuous with the Black Belt panel. Then a couple minutes of grappling with my Instructor. He tore my gi while we were sparring. He grabbed it with one hand and punched me with the other and it tore the dang thing. Also, while sparring, my Instructor's Instructor grabbed hold of my gi on the sleeve and didn't let go for the whole fight; he beat the pulp out of me. They said the reason that they fought me so hard was so that i'd know that if i could make it through 15 rounds of full-contact sparring and a round of full on grappling with experienced Black Belts, then i could handle anything that i would ever encounter. I was 14 at the time of my first test. -
There's only three of these guys. No one else. It's literally three employees, a cashier (who seems to be the owner) and two cooks. So, they're not really taking over the kitchen as most do. they have an open kitchen where you can watch them cook. I've watched them and they are very nimble and well balanced as someone who practices the arts is. The only one that talks only understands English words pertaining to the restaurant - numbers, food items, drink, thank you, hello, etc. I'm not sure if they're Cantonese or what, but i was wondering if anyone knew the proper way to ask a Chinaman if he practices the arts. What words, ya know? I know if i try to ask if they know 'Kung Fu' (in my Oklahoman accent) he'll try to sell me moo shu or something.

Thanks everyone. Didn't mean to start another wash-or-don't-wash discussion. Just wondering if anyone on here can justify purposely fraying one's belt. So, from what i've read so far, no one on here has purposely frayed their belt in order to make others think that they have more experience than they actually do, and no one can justify this, right?

Not meaning to go off of the subject too much here... I've been to a lot of national and international tournaments, but never bothered watching the breaking competitions. I did watch at a local level though. I always saw the same breaks, mainly elbow drop or forearm smash on as many bricks as possible. What is the most obscure break you've ever seen? also, has anyone here ever seen anyone that studied the iron palm do anything cool?

well, was he countering, avoiding, stepping back... what was the shorter guy doing that the taller guy wasn't? or were they both standing exactley the same when you attempted the sweeps?
