What about snipe hunting?

Why do firemen wear red suspenders? do hold their pants up. _____________ Why do cowboys ride horses? It's easier than carrying them!

I've seen this show a few times. I enjoy watching it and all. I think this show really exemplifies the difference between Martial Artists and these UFC guys. At the end of the fights, the loser gets mad, shouts, curses, flips people off, etc. I've only seen one person ever do this at a Martial Arts tournament and his Instructor put him in his place quickly.

Although there is no basis for this myth, i'm glad that is exists. It makes things so much easier when you're trying to figure out if this crazy redneck is telling the truth or not. Once you hear that phrase '...register my hands...' you know that it's all a lie. Those are some of my favorite people to talk with, the ones that studied the hardest corest style of all Martial Arts and blah blah blah. We've all been there, eh?

I can see both sides here. For the record, i'm not trying to turn this into another 'wash-don't-wash debate'. although i don't really think that there is anything special in my belt that the magical washing machine would take away from it, it is something sentimental to me. My Instructor gave it to me, i worked hard to earn it, i've worn it a lot and i have some really special memories with it. When my belt fades and tatters, i will be very proud. i can't say that i won't get a new one, or wash it if it stinks, but i'll always keep it. when you see someone with an old, gray, frayed, tattered belt, i dont' think you owe them respect immediately, but they will usually earn you respect in a short amount of time. but in the end, it is just a piece of cloth that 'holds your pants up.'

This is a good maneuver for an Instructor on a young student. When i was a kid, i remember an Instructor - that was very large - would just move his front hand over like that and just leave it there, waiving, until you looked at it. After a couple seconds of this everyone would eventually look, and if you didn't, he'd hit you with that hand. i agree though, that a feint would work better in a tournament, or against a skilled fighter, but this slight distraction works well against a newer fighter.

It's better to burn out than to fade away - Kurt Cobain I think I'm dumb, maybe just happy - Nirvana Some of us are merely born to die - Marilyn Manson It's better to regret something you did than something you didn't do - Butthole Surfers The end excuses any evil. - Sophocles Treat you friend as if he might become an enemy - Publilius Syrus I wish they’d just wipe out humanity and get it over with. It’s the waiting I can’t stand. - Fry on Futurama – The Problem with Popplers If I answer questions every time you ask one, expectations would be high. And as you know, I like to keep expectations low. - George W. Bush - Washington, D.C., Dec. 10, 2002

How you've dealt with verbal things
scottnshelly replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Most people only insult others becuase they have low self esteem. Keep this in mind when recieving an insult. however, if it persists, you can either ignore it, go along with it or reverse it. i usually just remind them of their low self esteem and leave it at that. 'yea, you may be right. i might be ______. you have really low self esteem' stuff like that. -
You know the best way to tell that carrots are good for your eyes? have you ever seen a rabbit wear glasses! seriously, when i was a kid i wore glasses and contacts (not at the same time of course). after a while i got tired of them, then i moved out and supported myself and couldn't afford to keep up with the perscription with no insurance, so i took them off. i've been without corrective lenses ever since. i dont do any excercises though. i have read of some types of excercises, but it's not like lifting weights - which is kinda what the original question sounded like. i've read that standing/sitting in front of a tree and counting as many leaves as you can without moving your head is supposed to help you focus. i've also read about walking into the middle of a dark unfamiliar room, then turning the lights on and saying out loud as many objects as you can in 10 seconds.

Martial Art(s) of the Samurai
scottnshelly replied to Jag-Isshinryu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
wow, i'd really be interested in learning some of these, specifically the art of tying someone up and stopping arrows! thanks for the very informative post. -
In a pinch we used to use a head gear or foot pad as a kicking target. One time, at a class i attended many years ago, the Instructor tied a bunch of white belts together to form a long rope to practice bobbing and weaving.

here is a small bladed weapon - i know it's not a sword, so don't try to get me on that one!. the butterfly knives from Wing Chun http://members.tripod.com/~Wing_Chun/Knife2.html let us know your final decision.

you are talking about very awesome weapons but...

Thanks for telling us what is wrong with our Bruce Lee movies and what is more accurate about your generation’s movies. Studies have proven that most people don’t carry a three-sectional staff to a Chinese restaurant any more, but there is always a metal pipe, chain and baseball bat in the alley when the gang comes out from behind the trash cans. I think all of the real good answers have already been taken by the veterans on the board, so I’m not going to try to top their answers: for practice for improvised weapons, hand/eye coordination, tradition, hobby, exercise, concentration, etc. -
It is all dependent on the practitioner. On a side note though, i downloaded a wushu eagle claw form this morning from ares lite; it had the fastest cluster of hand strikes that i've ever seen. i'll see if i can find what website it came from for everyone else to see.

My Instructor is 8' 10", 750 lbs and can palm a medicine ball. but seriously, very tall and with a lot of weight. he also has the fastest hands of anyone i've ever met. he probably couldn't keep up on the track, but he could whoop up on anyone, no matter how skinny.

I’ve studied Martial Arts for 15 years, mostly Tae Kwon Do. In my Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do class we learnt pal-gyes and tae-gyuks (sp?). In my other class we learnt the Chun-gi patterns. Forms wasn’t ever our emphasis, just something we did in between one-steps and takedowns and what not. When I read some of the topics on this forum (especially in the Karate forum) I see that some other styles/schools put a large emphasis on katas and the application of the techniques and the breathing and all. Why is it that most Tae Kwon Do classes don’t put much emphasis on forms while most Karate schools do? Is it because the katas are relatively newer, or don’t contain the ‘hidden secrets’ that the Japanese, Chinese and Okinawan styles contain?

OSensei Philip Porter
scottnshelly replied to scottnshelly's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I figured most would be familiar with him. He is the founder of the USMA. very highly ranked in Judo and several other styles. He is based out of California, but has schools in every state. -
I'm not even going to try to compete with your smiley faces, you win. the first weapon kata that i learned was with a bo, the first weapon that i practiced using was a knife (not too many knife katas out there). my latest is cane.

I don't know about creating a new weapon, but i like to practice with improvised weapons, like garden tools. a hoe, shovel, rake, spade, hand rake, etc. would all make great improvised weapons. it would be hard to come up with a completely new weapon that someone hasn't already been hit with. if you do, it's probably not going to be really useful. maybe you could take a picture of that one with the paint can and post it?

What are your thoughts on OSensei Philip Porter?

I've seen these types that you are talking about, they seem impracticle to me. They would leave your entire body and head open for a counter and you little chance of blocking and/or countering. Those that attack high and low would also put you off balance, leaning forward. It may just be that i've never seen one of these double hand strikes used in a good way, but i don't think, in general, that they are useful. the only exception to this that i could possibly think of would be two very short hand strikes to the same area - both sides of the neck, both ears, etc. i definately wouldn't try one high and one low or even both low.
