  4. Every other saturday I wake up very early, around 7. This is really really early for a teen. And I go help my instructor maintain the school for a couple of hours before the first class starts. He says that he expects everyone to do that. But, I'm the only one. When snow needs to be shoveled he does it, when anything needs to be done either he does or he has to ask someone to do it. My opinion is that a karate school is a unique business because it's focus is not the bottom line. So, people should help out. What do you guys think? oh: Also if I let my instructor break his body doing janitorial work, who will teach me martial arts in ten years. I want to keep him around as long as possible.
  5. We have certain rules at our school about pushups. Certain infractions are dealth with 25 pushup multiplyed by how many instructors are in the building. I read what you guys said about pushups and I think you're right. But, it's not my school. And I have realized he was jsut looking for an excuse to leave anyway.
  6. yes
  7. i remember when I was training for the us open for about 3 and 1/2 hours a day. I had drilled my kata so that I could do it in my sleep. I would come home exhausted. I went to sleep and my sister had come in to borrow something for whatever reason. I immediatly jumped up with knife hands in a fighting stance.
  8. i play soccer but that's never happened to me. WHat does happen to me is whenever someone is about to bump into to me or play hit i put my hands up with my rear hand on my foawrd shoulder. reflex that's been developed over time, During soccer I've used flying front kicks, and tornado kicks.

  11. I have learned a lot about teaching. 2 years ago I helped my shihan with the summer camp. But, I was more of junior counselor/assistant instructor. This year I operated as a counselor, and was teaching classes by myself. Often times my instructor could not even be in the building while I had 30 students to myself. The only help I got was from his wife, as the other counselors were scheduled to arrive after the class was over. When I would teach I could not get the discpline I wanted. They would play, move, talk, not pay attention, anything besides what they were supposed to do. At this point I was convinced it was because about half of them had some kind of diagnosed issue (emotinal/mental). But, then shihan could do it, so why not me. I also thought it was because I did not have what it takes to command respect as I see other senseis do. I talked with my shihan, and watched other teachers. It was so bad that shihan had a 10 year old girl keep the class quite after I had failed. I started changing my demeanor. I would stand up taller, and make my face less gentle looking. Stop trying to be their friend, and start being a sensei. The most important thing I changed was my voice. The tone I took with them greatly affects their obediance. Teaching children is a lot harder than teaching adults! I know I have come a long way from the classes I taught as a brown belt 3 years ago to today.

  13. I'm in higschool and it can be trying sometimes. It came out that I was a blackbelt because I did a performance in a production. The crowd liked me 540s and flips and all that good stuff. But, everyonce in a while I get a "I'm not messin with im he's a blackbelt" and "Hey show a karate move". Combined with how highschool boys are insecure and fell the need to prove themselves, it can be very frustrating.
  14. I know what you're talking about. I've been in karate for almost ten years. My father who has never taken one class trys to give me advice in tournaments. I tried to tell him it didn't help and he got really agitated. So, be careful how you deal with fathers.

  16. This has been nagging at me for a while. So I'm going to get this off my chest. I'm a 15 year old shodan. And the kid we'll call Geroge, is a 15 year old blue belt. A year ago I had recently moved to the city and a new school (I'd gotten my belt in a similar system). And found out that one of the kids who went to my school, had become a blue belt five years before I'd moved there and then quit. I convinced him he should come back. The head instructor was elated and George was in class for a couple months. One night, I was teaching class. He was in it. While I was teaching the class a form I noticed that he was wearing a necklace. Which is against school policy. I told him to take it off and then walked away. I came back he had it one. I told him again and this time he took it off. Later that night I was correcting the positioning of his hands. He was rolling his eyes and muttering under his breath. I told him to give me 25 pushups. After that night he never came back. Who's fault is that? Do you think th ehead instructor was angry at me for loosing a student, even though I brought him in and the instructor never told me aything about it? Is this kid just a weanie?
  17. I've done both. They have plenty of differences and you just pick whoch one you like based on preferance. They both have the same problems like: not enough/or trained judges, debates over rules and seeding. Whatever floats your boat.
