Whats your favourite stance , Why?
manuelito replied to Matousek's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
this all depends on what i am doing at a particular moment. that being said i try took keep square with my target most of the time unless in transition. imo all stances are important you never know when it will come up in a situation or some modification of them. -
well dear john, since it sounds like you do not have a lot of money tied up in this school and only time i would recommend that you stick it out. at least until dan levels then you will have a really good feeling on what next to do in your ma training. to answer the mcdojo question, always look at the bb as a whole. take into consideration age, time spent, rank etc. this is usually the determing factor for me. just because one spends a lot of money on training does not always mean that it is a "mcdojo" school. i do think that a fee of $300 for bb (1st dan) a bit expensive. tells us what you decide to do. good luck.

Well-rounded MA
manuelito replied to Cross_Trainer's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
1. don't train so many different styles if you've only got 8 months of training under your belt well put sevenstar. cross trainer, you need a stronger foundation before you go into something else. maybe another year an then take on a grappling art. imo does not matter which. -
matousek, are you trying to learn on your own? if so bad idea with any style. wing chun is great imo for all skill levels. if you have a wing chun school near you go check it out. it may or may not be for you so it is always best to see it in action. try a search for wing chun books, videos, etc. there is so much info out there you will find something i am sure.

okc, i do not agree. basics are a very good start but not always enough. first sidekick is to slow, to easy to counter and leaves you really open. second backfist is to easy to block and counter, everyone does this so hard to be sneaky with it. i am not saying that these techniques will not sometimes work just not always. i think good front, side, round, back kicks are a must. for hand techniques punch, ridge, backfist a must. this is ofcourse only an opinion.

minimum age requirements imo a good idea. however what should the ages be? to me the ages of 13-16 for 1st bb to young. i speak from experience, i got my first bb at age 15, and i did not respect the rank as i do today. if i had my way 18 yrs would be the age for eligibility for 1st bb and must have at least 5 years of training (2-3 times a week).

TKD Blocking...
manuelito replied to Dijita's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
i block kicks with my shins, bottom of my foot, low blocks, getting out of the way is best imo. and i spar in more of a square position if that makes sense. -
Is hitting a heavy bag bare knuckle good for conditioning
manuelito replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in Karate

Boards Broken?
manuelito replied to Chris Mckechnie's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
chris that is preety good i guess. what does breaking boards accomplish? let me ask you a question, do you think someone is going to stand around while you square up your technique? try another test of skill. stand in a horse stance (middle stance) and let someone side kick you in the stomach. now that would be something to see. i am not trying to upset you, just focus on the more important aspects of training. by the way i have also had to break boards for testings. that was long ago and even then i thought it was silly. -
Random thoughts on the tournament season.

good luck to you. i hope you enjoy. -
don't hate, congradulate (unknown) are we there yet? (unknown)

mine would probably be kanku-dai or chinte in the shotokan system. and for tkd (itf) yoo-sin and ge-baek are my favorites.
