It snowed here in New Orleans on Christmas Day so everyone was expecting the Saints to make it to the Super Bowl this year. But the Jets lost so we're out.

I compete in USTU (WTF) competitions, so its either Ko-ryo or Taebaek. In AAU competitions I'll do Yoo Shin.

Hey, anybody coming down to New Orleans for Mardi Gras (Tuesday Feb 8th)? If you come the weekend before there is usually a TKD tournament, we can hook up and go. My kids and I usually go.

2004 memories: March 2004; AAU Southern Regional Qualifier: My son and I place 1st in forms and my daughter places 3rd. Then all three of us placed 2nd in Olympic sparring and 1st in point sparring. The funny this is that we go to a dojang that only does Olympic sparring. We did the point sparring just for fun. June 2004; Belt test: Ross and I take our 4th and final part test for our 4th dan. We passed and were awarded our belts and in December we received our certification. July 2004; AAU Youth and Adult National Championships: My daughter places 3rd in forms and 1st in Olympic sparring. This was the top highlight of the year for me. December 2004, weapons demo: My kids and I prepare for and perform a weapons demo at a belt test where there was a large panel of 5th, 6th, and 7th dans judging three 5th dan canidates. Videos posted on the WEAPONS thread. OH, and this....

My first tournament was an in school tournament when I was a green belt. I don't remember how I placed in forms or if we even did forms, but I did place second in sparring. Nothing out of the ordinary happened to write about. My first tournament on the circuit I placed second in forms and third in sparring. It was a local tournament sponsored by a local school so they weren't too strict on the rules. Good thing, because I didn't do a WTF form. The gut who beat me in my first fight won the division, but he hasn't beaten me since. Sweet revenge!

Hey gang, thanks for all the advice. I haven't reviewed this thread in a while, but my son has and said he's tried most , or all, the suggestions. He's got the drive working, but not as the primary drive. The other two kids are using the computer and seem not to be having any problems that I know of. I'll check with them tonight and see how things are going. Thanks for all your help!!!

Sausin, Thanks for the commebts about the form video. We do the the Chang-Hon, the TaeGuek, and the Palgwe family of forms, with an occasional Karate or Chinese kata. As far as the sai routine, prior to this demo I explained to the audience that this was just an exercise routine. While some techniques were practical, it was for the most part just an exercise in movement and dexterity. I'm still learning practical applications, but in the meantime I'm trying to develope balance and control of the weapon. I do a warm up and dexterity drill like the one in the demo to help with this. Ross has only been working like this with the bo for about 6 weeks. The routine you see him do in the video was started to be put together about 3 weeks prior to the demo. He want sto do a self defense domo with the bo at the next belt test. We wants me to attack with and knife and he beats me up. Go figure!

Congrats!!! Sounds like both a good day of competition and a good day of learning. You can't lose with that. Got photos or video? -

OK, I know I’m gonna regret this, but at your request….. (For better viewing you might want to right-click on the link and ‘Save Target As’ to your hard drive. Run a Virus Scan before viewing.) Ross, Shannon and myself doing Tae Guk Oh Jang: http://www.livaudaisnet.com/mafit/videos/TaeGukOhJang.wmv Me doing a creative Sai routine (first time ever!): http://www.livaudaisnet.com/mafit/videos/Sai_Demo1.wmv prior to this demo I explained that this was just an exercise routine. Ross doing a creative Bo routine (first time ever!): http://www.livaudaisnet.com/mafit/videos/Bo_Demo1.wmv Don't expect Hollywood! We were nervous as all get-out. There was a panel of 4th, 5th, and 6th degrees there to judge a belt test for several 5th dan candidates. They all complemented us on our routines, especially after learning we did this on our own without instructions (our Dojang doesn’t do this type of training). Well, we’re looking forward to learning more and developing and expanding our routines.

Well guys, this is the big weekend for our weapons demo. As you may recall, several months ago when I first joined this group I started asking about sai and bo. I needed to know what were the best to get for purposes of demo and maybe competitions. Many of you offered great advice and suggested quality equipment. Some even disagreed with my intent to be a little 'flashy' in our demo. But whatever the case, the time is at hand. The dojang my kids and I attend is having a belt test this weekend. Three 4th dans are going up for 5th degree. We wanted to do a special performance for these 5th dan canidates, and thus the weapons demo. Tonight (Friday) is the color belts, and tomorrow is the black belt tests. Tonight all attending black belts will be required to perform a demo. My kids and I are going to do Tae Guek Oh (6th) Jang in unison (at the same time). Shannon will be doing it traditional style while Ross will use a Bo and I will use the Sai. Then I'll do a creative Sai routine and Ross will do a creative (flashy) Bo routine. If all works well we'll perform it again tomorrow at the 5th dan test in front of several local Masters who are attending to help judge the test. This will be our first time ever doing something like this. Wish us luck!

Whats with tournaments nowdays???
Kicks replied to gojuchad's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I went to a tournament where the young adult forms division was mixed (men and women) due to a small number of competitors. A guy tried to add flash to his Koryo form, he even opened up with a back flip. An overweight young lady also did Koryo, very simple and basic and with no major mistakes. She beat him. The guy went home without a medal and very PO'd. -
