That's how we learn and practice our Hapkido, we are shown the techniques and then we pair off. tufrthanu, what other teaching & practice method would you be talking about?

We pretty much follow WTF standards. It takes about 2.5 - 3 years to get 1st Dan. Then, 2 more years before testing for 2nd dan, then another 3 years for 3rd dan, then another 4 years for 4th dan, then another 5 years for 5th dan. After that it's anybody's guess.

It's easy to quit, I've quit hundreds of times! I never was a heavy smoker, not even a pack a week. It's been over 20 years since I've touched one.

Interestering. I wonder if you're talking about the same red bricks we use? We use a red, clay brick. Old building around here were made of them. They seem to be a little more brittle than mansonary bricks. Do you have a choice of what break to perform? In our testing we don't have a choice. The brick break is a down punch. You have to condition your hand for months, maybe a year, before doing that break. You have to build up the two knuckles on the forefinger and index finger. The skin needs to get tough and the nerves desensitized. Build up your wrist, forearm, and shoulders. Put your body weight into it if you have to. Place a cloth over the brick to absord the blood. If you get to chose a breaking technique, try suspending a brick between two other bricks and just do a stomp (down kick?) with your heel. Again, condition the heel before doing the break. _____

We just had a Shotokan trained student join our WTF TKD school. He's college age and a black belt. After a few sparring classes he was asked how is he liking the classes. He said he's having problems getting in on his opponents. He keeps getting kicked every time he makes a move. So I sparred with him and found that he telegraphs his moves. I also allowed him to do what ever he wanted (I didn't counter) and found that he likes in-fighting (up close and lots of punching). I'm working with him to adjust to a new style of sparring (I'm talking strickly WTF sport TKD, not street fighting). Has anyone here gone from Shotokan to TKD? What advice from your own personal expierence can I pass on to him? I know aefibird just did a two week basic training in ITF; what did you learn that could help this guy? He's a nice guy and I'd hate to see him get frustraited and leave.

White Warlock, thanks for that great reply. I'm going to pass this lesson on to my kids BEFORE they are ever in a situation like that. Hey... now we have something to talk about at dinner tonight!

I thought I was your favorite "Kicks" Actually, when attacking: 1. fake front kick then roundhouse to head (same leg) 2. same leg double roundhouse, first to mid section, second to head (see photo http://www.karateforums.com/album_pic.php?pic_id=304) 3. skip side kick (with leg closest to opponent) then back kick before side kick leg touches the ground. when defending or counter attacking: 1. from open stance, back kick to counter a rear leg roundhouse 2. from closed stance, back kick or spinning kick to counter a front leg roundhouse 3. from any stance, stop side kick (leg nearest opponent) to stop any kind of attack

Olympic Martial Arts
Kicks replied to senna_trem's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
WTF Olympic rules are: 1. One point for a kick or punch to the body 2. Two points for a kick to the face 3. Extra point if downed fighter requires a count It is essential that blows are delivered to the scoring area with both accuracy and power. A valid point is only scored by accurate and powerful contact with the central portion of the striking surface of an authorized implement to a scoring area. Penalties are given for the following: Half Point Penalties (Kyong-go) Interference with the progress of the match: 1. Crossing the boundary line 2. Intentionally falling down 3. Evading by turning the back to the opponent Undesirable Acts: 1. Grabbing the opponent 2. Holding the opponent 3. Touching the opponent with the hand or trunk excessively 4. Pretending injury 5. Butting or attacking with the knee 6. Attacking the groin 7. Stamping or kicking any part of the leg or foot 8. Hitting opponents face with hand or fist 9. Interrupting the progress of the match (contestant or coach) 10. Avoiding the match Full Point Penalties (Gam-Jeom) Interference with the progress of the match: 1. Throwing down the opponent by grappling the opponents foot in the air with arm or by pushing the opponent with hand 2. Intentionally attacking the fallen opponent after declaration of Kal-yeo 3. Intentionally attacking opponents face severely with fist/hand Undesirable acts: 1. Violent remarks or behaviour by contestant or coach The match is organised round three, three-minute rounds with 60 seconds break between each round. The match is played on an 8m x 8m contest area enclosed by a 12m x 12m competition area line. Body protection is worn on the head, body, groin, teeth (optional), forearms and shins and instep. No gloves or full 'boot' type footgear. The idea is to score as many points as possible with kicks by striking to the front and sides of the trunk and front of the face. Points scored by punching are to the person's trunk only. -

Dean said: Its an early season. They've been available a few weeks now. I've never seen as early a season as this. Usually it's not until Spring that they are in season. As far as Mardi Gras, the actual BIG DAY is Feb 8th, but the season starts Thursday (the 12th night, when the 3 wise guys visited the child king). Parades start this week, and so do KING CAKES!!! Yummy...and bad for ya!!! There go those resolutions.
