What Does This Do For Your MA Resume?
yamesu replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I tend to agree with this - not because I think seminars etc are bad or useless - but because in my experience personally, seminars have been a method of further internalising techniques I already know. On occasion i will pick up a few new bits and pieces, but for the most part, there is only so much the human brain can take in within a few hours... -
Ibuki is made specifically to asset in increasing depth of breath while under tension. It is worth looking up, and better yet, having someone show you how to do it properly.

Georges St Pierre is a Yudansha in Kyokushin, and once while doing a demonstration at an MMA event, performed Pinan Sono Yon instead of the usual expected grappling/striking techniques. -

In addition to pull-ups, I am a big advocate for pushups on fingertips, as well as kettle bells. I find that the non-centred weight of the kettle bell assists greatly in training grip, in addition to the fact that you are seining a hefty weight you don't want to drop on yourself, or, send flying into someone else!

Administrative requirements to open a dojo
yamesu replied to Spartacus Maximus's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I'm completely unaware of any specific requirements. One doesn't even have to know the MA!! Huh? Sure, a person can MANAGE the dojo and know nothing about the MA at all. For the instructor, one can have a Kyu rank and still teach...there's no law against that. Who comes into a school of the MA? The CONSUMER!! The consumer might require that the instructor be a BB!! The consumer might want that the school is affiliated with a well known governing body!! The consumer DECIDES what they're looking for, and it'll be up to the school to meet a general requirement per the consumer(s) that darken the door. To me, "requirements" are wide open for interpretation(s), and these interpretations will surely vary!! The only license one needs is a BUSINESS LICENSE...a TAX LICENSE...both are not always needed. Check with your local, state, and federal rules/regulations/laws. Remember, state trumps local, and federal trumps state AND local!! You don't even HAVE to hang up your MA Certificates and the like!! These are something a consumer might want to see. Pay rent/utilities...hang a shingle...TAH DAH...you're in business!! This ^^^ -

Administrative requirements to open a dojo
yamesu replied to Spartacus Maximus's topic in Instructors and School Owners
And then there is the business side of things: -Attendance Lists. -Book keeping for tax time. -Business registration and listings. -Advertising. Etc etc etc. A lot of the book keeping and attendance can be done on simple spread sheets for a single dojo, but once things get more complex, a better system will probably be required. -
I have both, and each have their own advantages. Rattan is the best material for practicing applications, and striking bo against bo. It will last longer and won't crack like oak (though after a long time it may frat, which can be fixed with electrical tape). Oak is great for solo kata and is generally more hefty, so it good for practicing strength and speed with a solid weapon.
