  1. That is quite amazing, and in my (nearly) 20 years of martial arts, I have never seen anything like this. The Mawashi geri to the ribs is not all too amazing, that is quite common conditioning in Kyokushin. The groin kicks, I must say, would hurt even when wearing a cup! I am with MasterPain on this one, I REFUSE to even put any time/energy into learning to take a groin shot!!! The throat punches are really what gets me. That is just insane! Ive seen people actually carried off on stretchers in Kyokushin tournaments from copping a punch to the neck. Respect-
  2. A few catchups... 28 Dec 2011 -100 pushups on knuckles. -Drilled multiple kick combinations (kin geri, mae geri - mae geri, ushiro mawashi geri - etc). 29 Dec 2011 - P90X Cardio set. - Worked on Gekisai Sho for 30 min. - 10 min free heavy bag work. 30 Dec 2011 Resistance band training: - Drilled Mawashi geri (chudan/jodan) with medium resistance. 100 reps. - Drilled Mae geri (chudan) with medium resistance. 50 reps. - Drilled punches with light resistance (for speed), mainly straight, cross and body blows (approx 10 min). - Abs workout with light resistance (approx 10 min). 2 Jan 2012 - 30 min walk, followed by sprints uphill. - P90X Cardio set. - All Kyokushin kata once through. Work Gekisai Sho and Tsuki No a couple of times through. - Resistance bands (medium) Mawashi Geri and Mea Geri (50 reps). Light bands for punching combinations (100 reps) - Abs workout with medium resistance. - Combinations on heavy bag (jab, cross, mid roundhouse kick - lead leg low roundhouse, jab, cross, rear leg low roundhouse kick). - Drill uppercuts on heavy bag for power.
  3. Osu- Just a theory, but I believe Sosai prided Kyokushin on its strength in technique. I think this is why all bows are done with closed fists as opposed to open palms. Might be why the Seiza position in Kyokushin adopts this closed fist too? Coincidently, Oyama did, as fact, still use the traditional Seiza with the right big toe crossed over on top of the left big toe, but in my experience this has been lost over the years in the flat foot position. Osu!
  4. 7 December 2011 20 min standing wrestling (fence tactics) with partner.
  5. Osu, Sounds like a flexibility issue to me. Stretching Scientifically has a test that is useful to work out what your individual limits are (and if you can do Yoko Keage at chudan, you will definately be able to strech to the point you can do Jodan Mawashi). But try this - stand up straight and pull your foot into sokuto, then swing it up to the side. If you can get to your hip height with both legs, your hips and pelvic bones are not the problem, its a muscle and tendon flexibility issue. If not, your body may not be built for high kicks. I have always been shocking at Jodan Mawashi, and only started to get better at it in the past couple of years (mid, Ive been doing Kyokushin for nearly 18 years). Try the stretching in the vid from 3:00-3:20 twice to three times a day and see if it works in assisting your technique and flexibility: It has helped me! Good luck. Osu!
  6. Thanks Tallgeese I tend to write the tech's in Japanese dojo speak as I have had this ingrained from Kyokushin. Just let me know if you would like a vid post or link to youtube for better descriptions! 6th December 2011- 50 Pushups on knuckles, on floorboards. 100 Situps (variations - twisting and rocky style doing punches while coming up ) Drilled Jodan Mawashi Geri on Heavy bag - 10 min. Played "Blackjack" (only 1 to 10, I got lazy) with 24 kg kettlebell, following tech's: Swings, Presses. Drilled Uchi Mata and juji gatame, with partner - 10 min. Kickboxing with 16oz gloves (with clinches and knees, no elbows) - 20 min. Arnis (dual sticks patterns) and single stick disarm techniques - 10 min. Hokama Ryu basic Bo-staff kata and drills - 5 min. Stretches to warm down.
  7. Not only could you be ingraining bad technique (as Kuma pointed out), but you could be doing yourself some permanent damage, hyper extension is a good example of bad technique that will lead to permanent tendon and ligament damage. I would practice super-slow and go back to the begining.... especially if you cannot find or afford a teacher. Where there is a will, there is a way! Good luck!
  8. That made me giggle... seriously.
  9. Thanks Groinstrike! I was aiming to try to use this as an excuse to motivate myself to work out at home more than I do! Monday 5th December 2011. I was meant to do a Kyokushin lesson tonight, but was too tired after work so ended up at home and did: 5 min whole body stretching. All Kyokushin kata through once for speed. Gekisai Dai and Sho, Tsuki-No and Pinan-Go through three times. 24kg kettlebell - 5x sets of 10 reps = Swings. 1x set 10 repss on each arm = Presses. Heavy bagwork - 5 min kicking for power. 5 min punching combinations. 5 min punch and kick combinations. 5 min freestyle. Resistance bands 10 min (Les Mills style) finished with a couple of minutes of resistance punching. Pushups to exhaution. Leg stretches to warm down. I feel like I can do more, but its dinner time! Cheers-
  10. Excellent information! Cheers-
  11. After a littel while off training to concentrate of work and research, I put on a bit of weight (not the good kind) and I have found that in dropping back to my pre-binging weight, i am loosing some of my bulk strength. I have coutered this with resistance training. This has helped me drop weight and make up for bulk muscle/weight loss of pwer with speed. Remember Power is largely the result of acceleration and mass (when defining mechanical force where F= ma). Resistance training will help maintain speed while allowing for mass loss therefore evening out the power scenario. Hope this helps.
  12. My first time posting in this thread, but I thought I would give it a go! Sun 4th Dec 2011. 10 min leg, hip and lower back stretches. All Kyokushin kata done through 2x. Once for technique and once for speed. 30 min resistance band workouts (Les Mills style), including 5 min resistance punching to finish. 20 min heavy bagwork with 16oz gloves = Punching combos only for 10 min, punching and kicking for 5 min, then 5 min freestyle. 15 min intervals (1/1) on treadmill @ 14kph. Hyper extension Crunches to exhaustion on Swissball. Pushups on knuckles to exhaustion. Light stretching to finish. Cheers-
  13. Solid advice, I could not agree more. I too have lived in some parts of Sydney that have relatively high crime rates per capita, as well as tours of Mexico City, and truly believe that one of the primary things a person should take from the Martial Arts is awareness of how to avoid violent situations. Kudos Justice.
  14. Soild post! If it does happen (I hope for your sake everything has by now calmed down) use it as a learning experience. A loss is not really a loss unless it is repeated!
  15. OSU Snake! I can tell you that in doing Kyokushin, a couple of techniques I have used to work on my speed reflexes are: Uraken Ganmen Uchi, Uraken Sayu Uchi, Ago Uchi, and Jodan/Chudan Tatte Tsuki. I just warm up and then throw them in sets to drill speed (do it once your warm and still fresh, not already exhausted!). Also - working on my foot/hip pivot helped a lot to develop KO power in thes quick stikes. Lining up the toes in the pivot to the direction of the strike, no more and no less (if that makes sense...)
  16. I read "Zero" by Eric Van Lustbader not too long ago, and it was not too shabby either.
  17. If you want to perform while fatigued, you need to train while fatigued... In the words of my first tennis coach= "Practice does not make perfect... Perfect practice makes perfect!!"
  18. Insurance would be a big hurdle if you were to have it at a stand alone venue.... I think you would be a fool not to have the correct levels of personal injury and public liability insurances for that type of full-contact sport also. The last thing you want is liability for someone who trains light-contact to come along and crack their neck/spine from doing hard judo falls etc ec... I think the idea of having it moved around to already existing clubs (again verify insurances of each venue are fit for purpose) with concurrence from the current club trainers and owners would be a good way to go.
  19. Its a great kata - quite difficult to perform for the most part. That is exactly the way we practice Gedan Mawashi Geri, and the way I have seen it practiced at every Kyokushin dojo I have ever attended. OSU.
  20. I agree with the tennis shoe assertion. I train on concrete at home also and personally use basketball shoes or skatebording shoes (AndOnes or Airwalks), and they have lasted me a lot longer than my Puma/Nike or Fila shoes ever did. Problem is they dont have great mobility at the ankle or toes for foot technique like extending the instep or pulling the toes back for ball of foot kicks.
  21. Excellent article. Funnily enough, these four training mechanisms are the ways I have drilled the "simple" (which can be anything but simple) front kick in Kyokushin classes!
  22. Excelent article dealing with some of the more obscure and unique points of Capoeira.
  23. Fighter in the wind, Fong sai yuk, Once upon a time in china series, Aragami, Merentau. I could go on but will leave it at that
  24. Yeah, and you left your gear in my locker. You should probably come get it cause I can't fit my nunchucks in there. I love your humor MP. I'm voting for you in the "Funniest Member" category in the next KF Awards. I've never laughed so hard, because you make your point so exacting with your humor!! I second that nomination!
  25. Yeah, and you left your gear in my locker. You should probably come get it cause I can't fit my nunchucks in there. Exactly...
