19 Jan 2012. Early: -Warm up with quick jog. -Shadow(kick)boxing, 15min. -Handstands and leg-extensions on shoulders (core strength), 5 min. -Tensho kata. -Full squats with Jodan Mae Geri at top, 30 reps - alternate with combination (Mae Geri, Oi Tsuki, Gyaku Tsuki, Ushiro Mawashi). 3 rounds. -Jog to warm down. -Leg stretchin 5 min.

17 Jan 2012. -Speedboat refresher, moving in on stationary and moving objects for retrieval, unseen approch for survelance and manouvering in tight watercourses. -Included some hefty manual pulling of boats on trailers etc..

16 Jan 2012. -120 min Kyokushin class.

I have read a different take on this. Old school belts were white - the longer and harder one trained, the dirtier their belt got until it was literally brown. Nowdays the belt system mimicks this. This appears true for Kyokushin: White, Yellow, Orange (or Red depending who you train with), Blue, Green, Brown, Black. Starts light and progressively gets darker. Not my opinion, just something I read years back and has stuck with me as it makes more sense than a lot of other reasoning.

Hey, the brain needs a workout too!! 13 Jan 2012. -90min Kyokushin class. 14 Jan 2012. -P90X Cardio Routine. -Punch/Kick combinations (Kickboxing) on Heavy Bag (16oz gloves), approx 10 min. -Resistance bands training, medium resistance: -Punching for speed (jab, both hands) 50 reps. -Mae Geri (front kick) 50 reps. -Abs. -Abs workout from latest issue Mens Health magazine -Plank -Stepups with 12.5kg dumbell -Mountain climber -Bent-over Y-raise with 12.5kg dumbell -Goblet squats with 12.5kg dumbell. -Seipai through twice. Gekisai Dai and Sho through twice each. -Kobudo, solo Bo kata and applications with partner.

This is the way I have seen it done, and done it in every Kyokushin Dojo I have ever trained in (wel.. with a few minor exceptions). There is often one bad-egg who has something to prove.... they tend to quickly learn from others in house. The tall poppy is the one that gets lopped - The nail that sticks out is the one that gets hammered.....

10 Jan 2012. - Dont know if it really counts as "training", but 4+1/2 hrs heavy fieldwork. - Evening, Drilled Kobudo Bo Kata solo and variations with partner.

Precisely - I agree. Your there to train mutually with someone, not to knock out every other student in the dojo. Everyone is (or should be) there for the same reason - to better themselves. It comes down to how hard people want to go. If you want to fight at 100% and really cause some damage, enter a full-contact or bare-knuckle tournament.

Some good points raised so far. I too train in a "hard" style, and I can tell you that getting hit a couple of times makes you not want to be put into the same position again! Its a quick learning experience. But it certainly helps to pick more effective blocks and strikes against a partner going all out. One of the things that prevents us from doing nothing but stare each other out so-to-speak is that after 10 seconds or so of no contact, penalties can be awarded. You have to show fighting spirit. In saying that, we do a lot of one and three step sparring too. All types of sparring have their merit. Its (like you stated) all down to levels of understanding what exactly it is you are training for in a given scenario.

What is your favorite techniques...

Uchi Mata is a king technique for taking a match from standing to the ground, and probably my favorite throw. Funny thing (like most techniques I guess) is that years of practising it and I am still picking up nuiances every day, leverage points, small angles etc. -

What is your favorite blocking defensive technique? Sabaki to outside of centreline. What is your favorite attacking technique? Left hook to the temple (after sabaki to left side of centreline. Yohon Nukite - finger strikes to "soft points", mainly eyes or throat. -
After some deciphering, this sounds like a really good idea to augment solo training - almost like mixing a bag and wing-chun dummy.

I think yours is a solid strategy. After a few years off training Kyokushin, when getting back into the swing of things I had to "go back to basics" so-to-speak. I started with focus on solid technique, like you said, looking at proper weight shifts and aiming for perfect form (you know, that unattainable perfect form!). High intensity comes after I think. Its not worth me personally putting in the effort to get zapped with poor form and little power in strikes. It took me a couple of months to get back to several 5 min rounds of high intensity free-bag-work, but was worth starting slow. Good luck!

Maybe if the prongs were at length, or at least closer than they are. Apologies for the ambiguity, I should have written "...make more sense that the Sai EVOLVED from the end of a pitchfork". Weapons consistently evolve to become "fit for purpose", and it makes sense to me that (presupposing the okinawan weapons did actually come from farm utility tools - which i am not saying is strictly correct, just playing devils advocate here) a tool would have been modified as it was used as a weapon to be made more fit for the purpose it was then intended for. If they needed shorter and wider side prongs for use as a weapon, so be it - just start to make it that way. We can see this point in more recent modern history with the evolution of guns - what they were like 50 yrs ago, and what they are like now - fit for purpose.

I am fairly sure weapons resembling sai have been used in india for far longer than they were in west asia. On the flipside, does it not make more sense that the Sai is the end of a pitchfork than a seed planting instrument?

Osu Evergrey, Ive never questioned Seiza in Kyokushin, but did a long time ago question other parts of technique ect. The response is rarely a plesant one. The most recent, I asked why Sanchin Kata does not end up in the same place (following embu) like all other kata. The response I got was "there is a reason for that"... and no further explanation. Haha! I dont want to blindly follow, and I think that being able to think freely is a paramount trait, however, sometimes it is worth putting faith in those who have significantly more experience in "Walking The Path" than I do Osu.

5 Jan 2011 - P90X Cardio Routine. - Leg stretching for 10 min. - Blackjack with weighted squats and Jodan Mae Geri (pushed to 21 this time). - Combinations on heavy bag (Oi Tsuki, Gyaku Tsuki, Chudan Mawashi Geri, Gyaku Tsuki, Oi Tsuki). - Seipai Kata (worked for about 20 min). - Worked variations on side kicks (Yoko Geri) for about 10 min. - 10 min Jissen Kumite with partner.

3 Jan 2011 Lazy Day. - Few sets of pushups (didnt keep count, maybe 3-4 sets 10 each). - Blackjack with skipping rope and Chudan Mae Geri - didnt quite make it to 21 though... 4 Jan 2011 - P90x cardio routine. - Heavy bag work (15 min approx), Combinations on both sides: -Oi Tsuki, Gyaky Tsuki, Gyaku Chudan Mawashi. -Oi Tsuki, Gyaku Tsuki, Shita Tsuki. -Oi Tsuki, Gyaku Tsuki, Gyaku Jodan Mawashi Geri. - Repetitions of Chudan Mawashi on heavy bag. 10 each side, switch ect. - Resistance band training for explosive power (med resistance 20 min), punches, rows, iron cross, bicep curls. - Runs with resistance bands (2 x med bands) for about ten min... One snapped and now I have a chronic welt across my backside... Ouchies... Decided resistance bands are not as cool as I thought... - Pinan/Gekisai/TsukiNo Kata once through. - Sokugi Kata through a couple of times. - Seipai Kata through 3 times. - 50 Pushups (wide arms). I cant wait for kyokushin to start up again after the holidays... Im getting sick of only training at home....
