What is the big difference between Traditional and Non-Traditional karate? I am a purple belt in Okinawan Shuri Ryu karate and for us purple belt is 4th kyu because we have 3 degrees of brown. white=10th kyu orange=9th kyu gold=8th kyu yellow=7th kyu blue=6th kyu green=5th kyu purple=4th kyu brown=3rd-1st kyu black=1st-10th dan that is our belt ranking system.

I have used a dummy before, but only for about 5-6 min at a Kung Fu dojo in northern Illinois, the master at the dojo showed me a leg sweep i could use on it. It was rather fun!!

ok, just wondered b/c my friend had encountered many racial engagements at his dojo.

I have just wondered, has anyone ever encountered racism at their dojo or club?

Along with Angus's comments, a fun game would be another good practice for them. Maybe kid sumo. We have that at our dojo, where the kids are on one foot and have to push each other over on a very soft mat, it is parent-friendly also.

Hello, I would strongly recommend to join another Okinawan style. Shotokan would be a good style to join because of its popularity. Then there are more secluded styles like Shuri ryu. Goju is also a good Okinawan system. Goju, Shuri, and Shotokan ryu are all very similar.

at our dojo we do spar with weapons, but only once a month. We do not use protection but we have to kime 6 in. before hitting the person and then we have to bring the weapon bcak out before the other person can "block" or hit the weapon before it gets back into a defensive position. You kinda have to see it before you can understand it. I dont like it as much as chumbara, which is sparring with foam swords, very similar to kendo but with less rules.
