  1. Even though I've never heard of this it never ceases to amaze me the different styles in the world. Yaw Yan ? It's new to me.
  2. Interesting article, thank you.
  3. That's great, I just added it to my X-mas wish list! Thanks.
  4. I am not familiar with flat feet either, I don't see wear it would completely stop you from taking any style of martial. Ask the teachers, Instructors of schools in your area this question and see what happens. Good luck !
  5. Thank you for posting your article, I always enjoy someones opinion other than my own,( but not always). When I first got envolved with MA's , Bruce Lee was my first motivater. When I inrolled in my first school I wanted to become a teacher and didn't give any thoughts about socializing. Now a-days I train alone because it's very personal to me, a relashionship that I try to nourish through self-disciplined training. At this stage in my life the only people I would care to share this with would be other martial artist with the same seriousness. Good article, thanks again!
  6. If that's all you have to use then you do what you have to do then use'em. I think foam chucks have there place in training. Increasing your speed for a showmanship presentation, sure! Daily, practical fundemental understanding, No way!
  7. I have used my martial arts knowledge in my pass much more than today. I have broken-up or stopped fights(20?) with techniques learned. I have stopped 10 men that saught to do me physical harm, maybe 10 times with MA techniques learned. I have avoided countless situations that would have placed me in violent confrontation thanks to learning MA's. But the men I scuffled with; number 1. they were your average person(couch potato's with a job). Number 2. most of them were under some kind of influence(alcohol, drugs, etc..) Number 3. Most people after 1,2,or3 punches, kicks, whatever are trown have no idea's of what to do next, where-as a martial artist is always thinking.
  8. I have trained primarily in CLF, I learned TCC because it inhances my primary MA. I have thought about learning other styles because they each have their strong points. I like the idea of loyalty to one style, but then we are in the year 2004 and I think that we as individuals are capable of living "our lifes" here and now in "our time" since life is always reinventing itself I don't see it as unnatural to want to learn two styles or more. Most of the passed masters I done any research on, they two learned ma's from many resources and created something new(Choy-Li-Fut being an example.) I think the difficult part would be keeping philosophies from two or more styles in balance with one-another or straight in one's mind. Would I learn a different style ? Yes Which one ? BJJ, Why ? If my fight goes on the ground I feel BJJ would help me tremendously.
  9. Hi, welcome to KF!
  10. Hi, welcome to KF !
  11. I would concentrate on your beginning before you worry about tomorrow. Full contact, I say go for it ! I'd see how well you heal-up after a few hits to get a feel for it.(hopefully that won't happen to much) I agree with aefibird, ask your instructor first, but twice a week up to three of four days a week is good. I think it's awsome that your involved with your family!! Good luck and welcome to Karate Forums!!
  12. I'm shaking my head, but Good Luck in Mexico LB and keep an eye on your fingers and orifices...lol.
  13. I have taken some time to think about this question, I certainly do not want to trash talk or say my style is the best. I think we are all looking for honest answers from everyones own opinion. So please don't throw to many tomatoes at me , I'll comment on styles I've seen, here goes: Aikido (a way to fight without fighting, awsome jointlocks and throws)=Morihei Ueshiba Brazilian Jui-Jitsu (rules the ground!, chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations)=Carlos Gracie and Family Jujutsu (close combat experts!)=much thanks to Japan! Kendo(if I see a shinai, I out of there!) Muay Thai(I guarantee someone's getting knoked out!) Ninjutsu(they do their homework)=Toshitsugu Takamatsu Shudokan( I haven't meet a black belt yet that could not hold their ground!) Choy-Li-Fut(Wushu on steroids!) There are so many more that I have not seen, but there they are in my opinion.[/b]
  14. Hello all, as I have said before I am getting back into my MA life. Things have changed since I was in a school. So not wanting to live in a "cave" anymore I feel that modern technology is here for us to use. I have been looking around and finding all types of new things to help an athelete. Do you use a Heart rate monitor ? Do you think it's a piece of equipment that will help ? or just another flashy gadget ? I'm looking at a LifeSource XC300 by A&D Medical, $109.00 You can monitor your heart rate, you can also keep track of your time in zone, calories burned and weather you've drifted out of your target heart rate zone. The are others Timex,Suunto,Polar & Cardiosport HRM's Please tell me what you think because I want to train smarter this time!
  15. Go see a physician first. Have you been doing anything different that would cause this ? Are you getting older ? Have you recently stopped doing something ?
  16. Tough question as I like most weapons! I like: Nunchaku(s) Butterfly Knifes(bamboo leaf knifes) Chinese Broadsword(s) Staff(8ft white wax wood) Spear Three sectional staff Double axes Steel whip(s) Tonfa(s) Sai(s) Double edged sword Double daggers and there are always more that hopefully someday I will have at least a basic understanding.
  17. I have found that the more I excersice the more I eat. The body needs fuel to preform the way we would like, making discisions about what kind of fuel to eat is a plus. I try to keep an eye on what time I eat so it dosen't interupt my workouts.
  18. Welcome to KF !
  19. I prefer not to fight and will do what I can to avoid any situations that might put me in a possible scuffle.
  20. I make my own after a few years of throwing money away, I'm sure with time you will to. Get a feel for different wood (oak, pine, acrylic...) I gave up on chain (tears the hair out from your armpits). I drill two holes through each piece of wood, and one down through the center. I thread the rope(nylon) down the center out the first top hole down the outside then in all the way through the bottom hole, back up and in the top hole and out through the center. Repeat on the second piece of wood and tie a square knot then burn the ends and heat the knot to melt the rope (nylon). Good luck and have fun !
  21. I agree with wck man, stop training the damaged areas until they are completly healed. I also use DDJ, I believe it helps condition the body as do others. I hope you heal-up soon.
  22. Fat Donkey, You've made the choice to take Krav Maga so, show the respect and learn KM. Do not argue, listen with intent, and earn the level you want in KM. Offering suggestion might be taken as an insult especially during a sparring match (be careful). You might think about private lessons because of your previous experiences. You could explain tthe instructor that you have a good understanding of basic self-defence and go from there. All styles have their good points and I think it is a good idea to at least know of as many styles as possible. Instead of arguing about the difference, remember these differences for your own skills. Example : You are in a sparring match using MT and your opponent is using KM, you will understand better what they are going to try and why. Have fun and good luck.
