  1. This is more for more advanced practitioners, when working on your forms, kata, Do you prefer practicing alone? Do you like a senior student or instructor watch ? Do you video tape yourself so you can see your technique,(s) ? Do you listen to music or other (meditaion sounds, etc) ? Do you pratice inside or outside ? ( I practice inside only on a level floor, it's rare if I practice outside) Do you practice on a wood floor, inside carpet, tile.....? What type of shoe sole do you prefer ? (cotton, sports sneaker, others..) Do you prefer it quite so you can listen to your breathe ? ( In the forms I practice the are exact times to breathe-in and breathe-out) Do you study (read) so as to have a good understanding of aplications, fundamentals ? Do you mentally visualise the aplications when practicing forms, kata, etc.. ? These are many questions that I am sure will get lengthy replys, but it is for the discussion specifically for forms, kata, sets, etc...(whichever word applies to your style)
  2. Firstly, Welcome to Karate Forums ! I just contacted the school I'll be joining in a few weeks, The rates are $100 a month or I can choose a 1 year contract. Uniforms are not included and I forgot to ask about any testing fees. I did ask about the contract; if I don't meet requirments will I be allowed to continue being a student ? I was told "no" it is just and option in payment. What is the $115 at the end of the year for ? Find out.
  3. LB this move does not suprise me, coming from BJJ. I would think that ground-work is essential in every martial artists arsonal. As with most scenarios what your opponent does will sometimes dictate what you do. Thanks LB.
  4. SPin, thank you for the websites.
  5. I am curious WW, what is a good way to get up off the floor to face your opponent ? (IYO)
  6. tommarker I didn't know that, it is nice but a little scary if ANYONE can contribute......
  7. If some people can dodge bullets or catch them in their palm, I guess I can stick my finger in the end of a gun barrel from 10 feet away, ta dah !
  8. Congradulations !
  9. I like this article, it has giving me food for thought and I know it will help my ma, thanks KM for posting it!
  10. If you are being attacked by someone with a gun , I would offer the least lethal target possible(an arm, a leg ) if that dosen't help stick your finger in the end of the barrel... (please do not stick your finger in the end of a gun barrel ! )
  11. Welcome to KF, I would look at the schools close to you and that will fit into your schedule. Watch some classes, ask questions then take a little time (not to long) to think about your choices, then go for it !
  12. I've been finding out more about my style and I'm getting the stories together for my library. They are funny, unbelievable and conflicting, but I'm happy about finding them.
  13. owww those are bad
  14. WW thank you for the eye opener, I've been away far to long. I have much homework to do on the history of ma's. I reley on my past experiences alot and the closest I remeber of flashy techniques was a jumping side kick. It not hard for me to think that centuries ago people that had nothing but time to train didn't think of "flashy" before we in the 21st century did, my bad. I still respect a simple tech. but I will open my eyes ! thanks !
  15. I worry about the statement it makes, I too lean more towards tradition. What most martial arts styles were created for was to cripple, mame, or kill. They(flashy, crazy stikes) look very nice to watch, but I have much more respect for a simple mastered block, kick, or punch. They may not look "flashy" but time has proven they get the job done, no questions asked. Don't think I don't appreciate any ability capable of a body in motion, the Peking Opera leaves me in Awe ! but a solid foundation generating power thru the waist and hips delivered by way of a clinched fist thru an opponent is what I would rather have people focused on.( just my opinion)
  16. I agree that in time you will begin to understand more and more. When I was a teenager and just starting in the martial arts I had specific idea's about what I exspected. Now 20 years later I have a complete different outlook as to why I train in CLF. I don't want to fight, I don't want a trophy to show off, I don't want to impress anyone. What I get out of my MA training is a peacefull self-discipline that brings to me a place here on earth that makes sence. Will I ever use what I have learned ? I hope I never have too. Would I use what I have learned ? If the circumstances required it I would act as quickly as possible unleash hell. But I live my life by a code of discipline ( or try to the best of my ability) to live in peace and respect others (golden rule). I use to ask myself why ? Why all the blood, sweat, and tears if I don't show somebody what I can do. Now I just get a towel, place my uniform back to its place, wipe my weapons clean and quietly go about my day. I do not know of the Dojo Kun of Karate, if it say to repress the aggresive spirit, I can understand it, but repressing the aggresive spirit and keeping it that spirit finely tuned I also understand. Give yourself some time and study these things you speak of in the Dojo Kun and meditate on them. I think in time you will understand.
  17. this was a double post, who ever can please delete this one. Thank you.
  18. I'm guilty, I have had many a strange look when I'm in my garden with a hoe. Playing frizzbe and wondering where it would hit someone when ya throw it. Attempting to catch thing knocked of a counter before they hit the floor. Trying to catch flies. Walking on the beach, then looking over your shoulder to see if you left any foot-prints. Giving your dog or cat that "high noon" look just to see if they will flinch.
  19. Hi Bob, Welcome to KF !
  20. Since I have been away from the MA life my discipline of food intake is far from from what I would like, but sufficient. For awhile I ate fruits and vegtables only (about 3 months). This was good in that I felt I was cleaning my bodies insides, however I noticed something, a craving ? a feeling like something was lacking ? meat !!! I don't try any fad diets, but I do indorce educated, structured, diets based on ones attention to their bodies needs. This can only (IMO) be done by education of food, body mechanics, etc.... Luckboxer, my hat is off to you ! I can remember when I could have posted a simular diet regiment. Back then I was taking in 6500 to 7500 calories daily. A mix of grains, meats, fats, vegtables, fruits, dairy products, and sweets. As I get older I notice that what you do on monday will effect you on friday, weather it is a workout, food intake, rest.... I think that once your at a level that you are what I call "cruizing speed" it is important to maintain a consumption of nutritous food. I do not drink soda, my coffee habit needs to stop, no junk food, I stick to the basic fruits, vegtables, grains(whole), meats(Chicken, Fish, a little red meat), very little dairy products, sweets (natural) and because of this I can live with myself when it comes to a fresh Doughnut!
