I thought a variant of this pass last week. I addressed the situation of when you get your knee through that for what ever reason you just can't seem to get the foot out. The body positioning is higher in the variation I used for the given situation since you were using the free foot to do a toe tap to the bottom knee. How do you address if the person on bottom catches the in foot and you can't remove it in the technique in the video? I'm not saying your way won't work but you've got those guys/girls out there that can hold on seemingly forever. I'm just curious as to how you deal with that situation being you're much more knowledgeable on the ground than I.

Again another great video. Keep 'em coming I'm a junkie when it comes to quality instructional videos like yours. Makes me want to start filming at our dojo again. I've been lacking in recent months.(Mostly being frustrated with failed up loads of my poor dsl but I've got fiber optic now so maybe I get back to work.)

Tallgeese I tried your way of knee on belly this morning during sparring. I must say I'll be adding this variation to my game. Thank you sir. I'll have to confess that it was a lot more stable than I thought it was going to be. And it seems to really lock you into position and not hinder you mobility. Again thanks for the great instructional.

Well done and attentive to detail. The only difference I see between our utilization of knee on belly I was taught by Luiz Palhares to goknee all the way across the stomach and the laces you referred to are against the hip which I find as a stable and mobile knee on belly but I'm gonna give your style a go to see the difference.

Caught with your pants down
pittbullJudoka replied to TheGrim123321's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
And this is why I always wear fight shorts under my gi pants. In case something of this nature happens oh well here's my fight shorts to save the day. -
Thanks for the article bushido_man. But in my opinion the author is comparing apples to oranges with bjj and mma. yes both sports use similar positions but for very different reasons. Yes the course of a bbj match would change if strikes were allowed. But it also sounds like they would like to see pints awarded for every single position possible in a bjj match. I could agree with the escape points but some positions are just that a position. If I have you back with hooks in and that is a 4 point position why if I trapping and arm with one hook should it be worth another point or two? The rule system with the IBJJF if out of control as it is. But again just my opinion.

Respecting the art
pittbullJudoka replied to pittbullJudoka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hey in my defense who in a thousand years would have thought the belt would come into play on the first technique taught by Master Palhares. But I had his hook up due to the fact I had earned my blue belt in BJJ just three weeks prior so all was good. Maisweh what kind of certification can you get in BJJ in a weekend because I could teach a weekend seminar on armbar variations. -
Respecting the art
pittbullJudoka replied to pittbullJudoka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm very open about my experience in both my given arts. I don't claim to be the know all end in either art as I'm young in one and even younger in the other. For example in my BJJ teaching I try to keep within my realm of knowledge if not I trouble shoot the given problem my student my have and if I fail to have the knowledge my Jiu Jitsu coach is more than willing to give me the guidance to the solution. I am more than willing to point a student to the knowledge that they seek. My main thing is not to put on the appearance that I am something I am not. -
I have respect all martial arts whether I agree with their technique or not. Now one way I respect arts if I walk into a gym or dojo I am not affiliated with or train at I wear no rank or a white belt. This being said I train at a BJJ gym and run a school of my own with my brother. When teaching Kenpo the art I have obtained the rank of 2nd dan I of course wear my black belt, when teaching BJJ I while wear my appropriate belt earned in that art. Now I don't go so far as to wear my jiu jitsu belt for every single move related to that art such as throws and different take downs. But If I go to the ground to get in depth with the art such as transitions and joint locks I will dawn my rank. Personally I feel that I should show my rank for the art I'm teaching. One reason for this is I would want someone to walk into my school and see me teaching some BJJ moves to my students wearing a black belt and have them to think I'm a black belt in BJJ. There are enough fakes out there for the average person interested in martial arts to deal with. Also I feel it would be a disrespect to my coach and the art. Also if I am rolling (sparring bjj) in my gym I will always wear my jiu jitsu belt. As a respect to my art. So my question is does anyone else feel this way?

I personally do not believe in an ultimate style never have. There are styles I prefer over others due too the mechanics. I do however believe in an ultimate blend of styles. And this will vary from person to person. In my opinion you can't have a singular ultimate style since individual style have faults. For instance boxing lacks kicks and grappling techniques, and Jiu Jitsu is lacking in striking technique for the most part. And wrestling is void of all strikes, like wise karate and kick boxing are void of grappling moves also for the most part.

I've heard it phrased like that as well and a couple other ways too. I just prefer the version I used sounds more like something they would've said in the ancient dojos. But again sound advice from everyone.

KarateForums.com Celebrates 13 Years Online!
pittbullJudoka replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Thanks for the mention Patrick and thanks for the wonder place you have provided over the years. There has always been steller discussion here. And it doesn't stray far from given topics and very family friendly. Thanks and congrats on the milestone. How many forums have been around this long? Not many I bet or at least not as this active if they are. -
The more you compete the less the nerves will get to you or that is my case. But I wrestled in high school so I was on the mats every weekend with numerous matches per day for that helped when I stated and competed in karate. As Sensei8 stated try to relax. The better prepared you are the less nervous too or again in my case. I keep the old proverb in the back of my mind "Bleed in the Dojo and Laugh on the battlefield" But just relax and have fun. That's what a competition is fun, don't get caught up in winning and loosing. Have fun meet some new people and learn.

Joe Rogan did an interview with Gene Lebell on the anniversary of this event last December and Gene talked about it among many other things. He carries a great idealogy of cross training in an arts you can. I had the pleasure of training with for a weekend several years ago and still carry those lessons with me to this day. Definitely a highlight in my journey through the martial arts.

No home accidents but of the the four holes in our dojo walls and the broken outlet cover I've been involved in all of the and the repair as well. It's bound to happen from time to time when you have breakable things around.

I know I'm late replying to this thread but I have been pondering on this set of moves after Shorikid posed this question a few weeks ago during class. I finally got to play with the technique trying to stay away from conventional thoughts of this does this and this. I played with the idea of what if the pressing block into the spear hand( I chose it to be a palm heel). then turning for a throw but instead of the throw what if it went wrong here and the managed to counter or not go down from the throw attempt. I could not replicate was I was envisioning with the help from Shorikid but was happy with the results none the less. I'm still pondering various solutions to the problem. But solid post from everyone on this as I am a firm believer that you give a section of kata to 10 dan level karateka and you'll get atleast 12 bunkai.

If I'm blocking I am using force on force to stop said technique. If I 'm deflecting I am using angles and redirecting motions to change the course of the technique oppose to trying stop it cold. I am partial to deflecting over blocking. My reasoning for this is one it hurts less than a force on force block that could in end results damage or injure myself. By deflecting the attack it can open up your opponent to attacks that weren't there due to them over extending or loosing balance. But there is a time and place for both blocking and deflecting. Great post Sensei_8

Graded a couple of weeks ago
pittbullJudoka replied to DWx's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Congrats sir -
First of welcome aboard. Your new your going to mess things up. If I didn't mess up at least a couple times a training session something's wrong. I've been training in one stand up style or another for several years and BJJ for around 5 years and I mess up all the time wether it be new or old technique. This is why you continue to train. There's alway room for improvement. It's part of training.

Karate plus BJJ
pittbullJudoka replied to Iskrax's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I'm going with Tallgeese and the others here. I've trained in both arts. There's no way to confuse an art that's completely stand up with an art that is almost entirely based on ground fighting. I say go for it. -
The Grind

Great post. It's all true as I've seen in my time in training BJJ too. I embrace the high and lows the wins and losses. I embrace the grind. Again great post thanks for sharing.
