  1. welcome tkder, where in fairfax do you live?
  2. welcome!
  3. welcome, and have fun!
  4. what would be a realistic weapon to learn how to use for modern day life? i enjoy learn about traditional weapons, but what would be the best weapon (aside from yourself) to learn how to use for modern day life?
  5. how can someone counter a quick side kick to the face if it's quickly drawn back as well?
  6. then why would you need help with figuring out how to kick in sparring to get a point?
  7. ad's got a point, it appears to me that its more the people training in highly combative MAs or in ones they think are highly combative are the people who are bragging the most and are the ones bashing other styles more. well, either them or the people who are not secure in their own style. how many times have you seen someone who takes a legit style of kung fu and have actually gotten somewhere in it start ridiculing(sp?) some other kind of art? its really quite sad when people judge other MAs by how quick you are to get to black belt and how "battle-worthy" the art is
  8. if you're a beginner, then i'm surprised you're sparring already. what kicks have you learned and how good are you at executing each of them?
  9. thanks PAL, one thing about it though... my sensei teaches us to kick above the belt, and only above the belt, is that how you're supposed to kick?
  10. its really amazing how weakminded people can be, WW is right, they didn't even make a simple phone call to the police to tell them "from what it looks like, someone just got kidnapped at the ____ mall and put into the trunk of a car". it looked as if the people tried to just ignore it, with the exception of a couple people who watched everything and didn't move a muscle. does anyone know how people can prepare themselves mentally to be able to deal with this kind of situation? if this kind of mental training isn't a part of your regular MA training, it ought to be, imo
  11. i have no idea who our grandmasters are, so far my sensei hasn't gotten into any kind of teaching of such history (perhaps due to the fact that i'm still only a 10 kyu (yellow w/o stripe). but for katas, the ones i know about are in order from white belt up... kihon ippon, kihon nihan, kihon sanbon, fukyu dai ichi, fukyu dai ni, fukyu dai san, fukyu no kata. so far thats all i know about. i know we do the pinan katas, and some other kata name starting with an h. i'll do some research to see if i can recognize what those katas are.
  12. ooooo, sparring for points? i thought we were talking about sparring to learn how to defend yourself, my bad. if its sparring for points, i'd ONLY use the roundhouse and front kick, it takes too long to do a side kick, unless you happen to have "superfoot" legs. isn't it unwise though to do a roundhouse to a kick of any kind to the head because of how easy it is for your opponent to take you off guard?
  13. i have to agree partially with jinxxor here. if i saw someone get kidnapped, i wouldn't try to interfere, what i'd do is get relatively close to the people involved, get a good look at them, at the person getting kidnapped and at the car or w/e vehicle it may be including license plates. but on the other hand, if i saw a woman or child getting beat up or threatened with a weapon, i'd interfere, if they were already being beaten up i'd do something to the attacker to make him unable to continue (or try to at least). if they were only threatening with a weapon, i'd go over and try to talk to the attacker and see if i could get him to just forget about w/e he was trying to do and leave. if the victim is a full grown man, i'd quickly find a phone and call the police.
  14. the reason none of us would rate our dojo as bad is probably because if it were bad, we wouldnt be taking lessons there
  15. wow! thanks, that dojo looks awesome, i'll have to check it out before i move (though taking classes there might not be possible because of the commute, traffic here is HORRIBLE). nother q.. would it be unwise to take ju jitsu and/or muay thai along with enshin? i looked at their class schedual and what i could do (if my parents were willing) is take mjj (mixed ju jitsu) mondays/wednesdays 7:00-7:45 and mt mondays/wednesdays 7:45-8:30, and take enshin tuesdays/thursdays from 7:00-8:30. i'm planning on making martial arts practically the numer 2 thing in my life (other than my faith and everything that implies)
  16. front and round house and normally the best or easiest kicks to throw at someone in sparring, and if you're good enough and quick enough at it.. the side kick, personally, the front stomp kick is a fun one for me, i have strong legs so if i get close up to the guy and just do a quick stomp kick at them even if they block it or try to, i will kick them backwards or get them off balance (keep in mind i mostly only spar green belts or lower, i know if i tried a stomp kick with one of you black belts i'd end up on the ground either holding a body part or in a lock of some kind)
  17. Thanks to both of you, I really am interested in training in enshin as my base style. I'd like to though for a traditional Shorin-ryu dojo near portland for me to train at as my main art, if not I guess I could just do enshin along with either budo taijutsu (anyone also know about that art?) or wing chun for my tradition art, and then bjj and mt so i can know to counter a boxer and a grappler. Another question to you all.... if you could study any legit karate style, for free, even if they style's dead, what style would you choose?
  18. Shorin-ryu, and soon full contact enshin! wanna figure out though what kind of shorin-ryu i'm practicing now... how many kinds are there?
  19. My dojo's good. It seems to focus more on training kids than adults (perhaps thats because 90% of the students are kids...) and I prefer an art that will teach me how to truly defend myself need be. Another negative aspect of it.. hardly any sparring or weapons classes. But other than that, great people, great teaching, good dojo.
  20. are these kicks for if self defense or for sparring/tournaments?
  21. Hey all. I've recently found out that my family and I are moving to Oregon, and so I've been looking around to see what kind of MA's are offered out there. I've found quite a few and there's one dojo that really caught my attention. They teach enshin karate, a mixed style of jujitsu, judo, muay thai, and pankration. anyway, what i wanna know is, is enshin karate any good for self defense? i don't care about tournaments or medals or any of that crap. i want to learn how to defend myself and others. also, if i were to go to this dojo, would it be wise or inwise to possibly take enshin along with MT or jujitsu or maybe take all three together?
  22. has anyone heard about the mall security camera that caught a woman being kidnapped on tape? http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20041111164509990006 if you were there as a bystander, what would you have done?
  23. what happened to the guy who stabbed the father/husband?
  24. i agree with most when they say "martial sport". its all far too fake. granted fun to watch on occasion, and it'd probably be a hell of a time to perform if you didn't really want to get beat up and wanted to have some fun... but no, not a martial art, even things like XMA and wushu require great strength and flexibility and eye hand/foot coordnation
