  1. For adults we also start at 12 Oz and then go up on hand size.
  2. Here is a little background .... http://www.bujinkan.co.za/H1.html
  3. Yes, basically you can see kikcboxing as a combination of boxing and full contact karate ... ? MT is as you have seen in the movie "KickBoxer". Full contact KickBoxing also only requires a minumum of 8 kick in a round and therefore is more based on boxing in that case. Semi contact or continuous is the same as fullcontact, but your contact is much lighter (you have to control and get warnings for hitting too hard) and you fight on a marked floor opposed to a "boxing" ring. Light contact is basically the same as Karate, where you fight for points and gets stopped at each point scored. MT is a case of Hitting with knees, elbows and low kicks. We do MT training for body conditioning.
  4. I rather do 3 sets of 15 reps. I find it to work a little better on my endurance and I don't get hurt that easily.
  5. Why didn't I think of that ... !!!!
  6. If you are too close and know that you will get hit while moving side ways, take a single step back and immeadiately sidestep. I prefer to step to my weak side cos then I can punch while moving or even throw a kick. Always attack in your retreat.
  7. Once you are happy with your improvement and you are past the pain, try this. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=174943&highlight=#174943
  8. If you can stretch for 30 minutes every morning and then stretch at your dojo as well, you should be able to see a difference in a few months (2-3). To be totally flexible in my opninion will take in the region of 1 year, if you stretch right and propper. This will aso help to get those legs loose ... http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=174943&highlight=#174943
  9. Your trainer will surely drill combo's into you when you are ready for it. In the meantime, try not to confuse yourself with huge combo's and stick to a 3 move combo. Even when sparring always use a minumum of three moves before you pull out again. Try something like jab, cross, hook - jab, cross, uppercut - jab, cross, front kick - jab, front kick, jab. Make these a part of your normal fighting and build on them once you are very comfortable with them. Always move in, do your combo and move out again. Enjoy!!
  10. I would also suggest that you try to attend 3 times a week. If your class is only open twice then try and get a friend to train with you one night and then you start off by running (even only 10 minutes) and then you train. Even if you do the same things you did that week it is fine. And like Shane said, stick to the current routines. If you can, run to the club and let someone pick you up after training or ride there with a bicycle. That will help with your fitness as well and will surely build stamina/endurance if you can pitch 5-10 minutes before you start class.
  11. Don't be afraid to fall. You get taught how to fall don't you? When being thrown, think about working on your falling technique rather than "being thrown". I usually end up being the demo puppet when my trainer wnats to show the class a new move.
  12. Hi GrayGhost, In my opninion, I would say rather do it a day before and or after. Wieght training takes quite a bit out of your arms and legs and you do not want to train that same night as you will have no strength. At first you will be sore and stiff the day after, but you'll get through it.
  13. There's this chick that works with me. She does TaeKwonDo (recently started) and her sensei bought this book and he is using it to teach his students. You guys must see this chick stretch and do forward splits. She does Tae-bo with me on Fridays and then the two of us stretch afterward.
  14. That's the only problem with winter, it stops you from doing extra training, like running in the mornings. It stopped me, but that is why I then joined the gym here at work. I also cycle and do mountain biking, which are also good sports to help strengthen the legs and burn some of that unused fat. But KBwanabee, you have been in the sport for 2 months now u say .... You will start to see a difference slowly but surely now. I suggest that you take a checkpoint now and then again in say 4 months from now and then again after 6 months. You'll see a difference. And don't forget to Enjoy the Kickboxing!!
  15. Yeah, cos is great talking about a mutual interest. The best way then would be to take a run/jog. I know you mentioned that the weather is getting cold now (we are now having spring and summer is around the corner), so see if you can go to a gym early and run on the treadmill (sp?). That is my suggestion ..... works for me.
  16. You guys know ... we are sounding worse than woman with this weight thing .... But I have to be honest in saying that I am also busy shaking off some weight. I joined a gym here at work which helps me alot becuase I no longer go and have a pizza at lunch time but instead I have a 50 minute cardio session which leaves me feeling much better. I do cardio once a week and Tae-bo once a week as well. In the beginning I started loosing centimetres/inches but since I have now started running 3 km (1.875 miles) in the mornings again, I can see a difference on the scale as well. I drink lots of water during the day. No coffee and hardly tee. I run at 05:15 and have breakfast at 07:15 when I get to work (I brink my own cereal, milk etc.). I only have 3 meals a day, but I try to have something small in between. I am 5'11" and weighed 84.5 kg (186.29 pounds) and I am now (4weeks later) on 78 kg (171.96 pounds). 17. Squawman said it ........
  18. Now here is a book I can surely suggest you all get. http://www.stretching.info/articles.html
  19. You get fighting fit by fighting (sparring) alot. A lot of cardio training also helps al lot, because fighting fit is about having stamina and technique. Okay ang_soo_do_guy, you are making a very interesting statement here. I wish to differ, in my opinion, from what you say becuase a Karate dude (Red belt for what it is worth, I don't know how they work it) had the walls wiped with his gi by a yellow belt (yup second belt) kickboxer. I know this because it was me who showed the braggar that he might have great technique, but we have contact. The fight was stopped half way and he returned to the club years later with his second dan and I happened to be there in a joined training session. He got his butt whipped again.
  20. And the best way to learn is from mistakes ..... but not your own. Watch other people spar and see if you can spot the effective movements and then also the "stupid" ones. You'll note why the guys say that you must keep your hands up. Try and get someone to video tape you while sparring (maybe do it as a club and let the sensei/trainer help the guys/gals out afterward) and then work on the mistakes. Also relax and enjoy it. Don't try to kill the guy with your first punch, cos he'll then return the favour and before you know it, you end up making enemies in the club/dojo. Have FUN!!!!
  21. How long is a piece of string? Are you looking for a sport to use in a street fight? That is a very dangerous game you are playing if your answer to my last question is "yes". A martial artist does not take up MA for the sake of whipping butt in a street fight. To us it is a way of living. Kicking butt is an added bonus if the end result is you walk away and attacker not. I will answer your question .... Yes, KickBoxing has surely kept my head on my shoulders in street fights, but that was not why I took kickboxing up back in 1993 (1991 for a few months). Also keep in mind that you are not the next world champ after a 3 monthe training session. I would tel you to take up kickboxing (or any MA for that matter), but your heart must be in it and you should also do it for the right reasons. Good luck!
  22. You probably earned his respect now and he will rather eat razor blades that choke you again, but as 47MartialMan said ... "Watch Your Back". He might be with friends one day and he might have had something to drink as well .... If that be the case, trust me, he will have a score to settle and will probable have assistance .... But on the brighter side ..... Gr8 stuff!!
  23. lol ...... if it can help a blind man fight it surely will help for anyone ...
  24. As long as it is not the joints that pain and merely the muscles. 60 seconds is fine and controlling your pain by not thinking about it is also very good. Continue doing it.
  25. If with the first attack you manage to break 2 guys' knees, then you only have 5. If they are smart, they'll rather just leave the issues. Attacking knees and throats will surely make the odds even. I'm not saying go and challenge 7 guys, but when you are surrounded .... take 'em out. Sounds like super hero stuff huh ... but when you life depends on it, trust me, it's survival of the fastest and not the fittest.
