  1. Alive?!? In some of the places i was brought up in, came from, whatever, if you walked up to 5 guys that are calling you names, a bodybag would be your new coveralls. The thing to truly understand here is that if you 'react' to words, you are giving 'them' power over you. Five total strangers, and here you are giving them a leash connected to the collar around your emotions. Be ready to bark, rollover... and in the end, play dead.
  2. Ki is not an English word, and therefore does not hold an English translation. What is needed, is someone to translate the word into something in English, and then we can continue to discuss it from there. Otherwise, a ki is a ki is a ki. Oop, just realized... i need to pee.
  3. /me gloats On a side, explain something to me Shane. Why is it everytime i see one of your posts, I have this uncontrollable urge to run out in the middle of the street and call out your name repeatedly?
  4. Styles of TKD, or styles of martial arts in general???
  5. Condolences. In a society of painted civility, we often forget that barbarism is actually quite common. And, in doing so, we often fail to train to defend against such barbarism. I cannot rightly say if your friend would have fared better had he good training and known what to have done in such a circumstance... which is to immediately hand over the money. The fact it happened at all does not make your friend at fault, for the henious act was committed by what is clearly a very evil person. I hope you can take your good memories of him, and allow a portion of his spirit to permanently remain somewhere in your heart and mind. I carry many loved ones with me, and occasionally i talk to them... sharing with them my memories, so they continue to live within me. Above all things, do not let hatred or disgust override the remorse you must now feel. His family and friends will need you now, just as you will need them.
  6. Ti, there is a code of conduct on all college campuses. It is clear, at least to me, that she is violating this code and thus can be expelled, or at the very least, restricted from participating in certain activities (your club, for example). As to the ratio concern, i think you need to step back for a second and look at this with a level head. While this 'wench' may be a major problem for you guys, she may also be a major problem for the 'students.' Also, do consider that if she is a major problem in your club, she is very likely a major problem on campus as a whole. People like this 'bring' attention to themselves, and i don't doubt she has some 'comments' in her files. Indeed, if she were to make a complaint... or push for an audit, you could very well indicate that your student numbers are down precisely because of this woman's recent membership, and that your group is in the process of communicating to all previous 'student' members... that the problem child has been banned... and thus they can 'return' to the meetings. Bring this up to your club president, your club advisor, the ASO president and the ASO advisor. A little brainstorming session could help you guys pull a few rabbits out of this ol' hat. And, remember, in situations like this, the ASO is actually on your side. The needs of the many outweigh the demands of the one. I.e., there's always a way. Oh, and i probably should mention, i served as the inter-club council president at one of the colleges i attended, so i do kinda know my ins and outs of how to circumvent the college system. One more thing. Clubs in college campuses are always 'flakey' when it comes to participation, but in no uncertain terms... if an audit hits, just about every person who previously stated they were a member, will step up and state they are 'still' a member. Clubs on campuses are extracurricular activities. Something for them to do when they need a stress break, some social interaction, or just have some time to kill. Few college students become impassioned club members.... but they are still members, in a college campus sense of the word.
  7. Not buying it. In this thread you state you posted background info in the other thread. In the other thread, you state you posted background info in this thread. Time stamps for these posts, as well as my searches shortly thereafter, clearly indicate there was no derogatory comments made within that timeframe. Also, i did find the 'one' post you indicated you had edited. However, that particular edited post was one of the ones referring to the 'other thread' as the one that has your background listed. I have no more time for this. Enjoy your stay in this forum, and hopefully you'll learn a few things. I will let you know right now, however, that if you post incorrect information, especially in an authoritative manner... one or more of the many 'master-level' practitioners frequenting these boards will likely step up and correct you. Indeed, it may be me. If such does happen, realize it for what it is... efforts to ensure that 'misinformation' does not become the norm for this community.
  8. I see, so you were posing one of those "what if" scenarios. Like, "what if my cousin grabs my left shoulder, then turns me around and asks me a question, but my brother interrupts him and points out that there's a special at Kmart. And then, a total stranger walks by with his dog while someone parks their car in someone else's driveway. All the while, your mother is cooking in the kitchen and you hear the phone ring, but the only working phone is upstairs... and you're on crutches because you stubbed your toe trying to fake a kick to distract someone just last week." So... what do you do then? Eh? Tell me...
  9. Did you study snake fist kung fu?
  10. Man, that was just... hmm... well... pathetic comes to mind.
  11. By: * practicing things that will work in the streets * recognizing all things around you, and training oneself to utilize them without restraint (restraint is not something you train... that comes from having common sense and it will step in of its own volition when necessary) * approaching all your studies as if you may have to apply them in the streets * conditioning your mind to examine conflicts in degrees * conditioning your mind to be able to switch between degrees instantaneously * conditioning your body for both prolonged and shortburst high intensity conflicts * practicing with intensity * train with full ferocity, preferably on inanimate objects * learn to 'use' your adrenalin. Subject yourself to adrenalin rushes and then 'work' with the adrenalin, instead of fight it * predator training. Learn to think like a predator, with your opposition being the prey * know yourself, learn to know your enemy, always know your environment * practice your techniques over and over and over. bring them to a point where your muscles automatically know what to do, so you aren't required to think when being confronted * gain confidence in yourself. not confidence in your ability to handle others, but confidence in yourself. To have confidence in yourself is to be introspective, to have confidence of others is to be extroverted... which translates to, 'overconfidence.' * build awareness of your surroundings * accept death as a possible outcome. be at peace with this, but do everything you can to ensure it is not your death, or the death of someone you love * accept fear A few other things, of course.
  12. angelica d, yes... i've experienced this on occasion, while as a student and as the instructor. When wearing the hat of the instructor, i handled it in much the manner i described in my earlier post here. When wearing the hat of the student, I generally handled it directly... speaking to the person in a friendly and most respectful manner. Each incident required different tactics, due to the nature of the relationship, or the severity of the problem. In a case similar to yours, where i was dealing with an ADD friend, i basically said, "dude, i need you to shut-up. You're not letting me focus and i might accidently slip and hit you a few times... and then kick you... and stomp you... and roll you over... and then choke you." Of course he laughed, but i got his attention... and getting him to shutup and be serious after that was a breeze. My magic word to him became, "focus" and he would switch into study mode.
  13. Ugh! I've had 2nd hand tellings of these things happening and suspected on many a visit to one school or another, but i had never actually seen it personally. I've received a brown belt, black belt, and black sash before, but none of these included a certificate, and the brown and black belts were merely for entry into competitions and returned immediately thereafter, while the 'plain' black sash was a gesture of respect from a friend/instructor that i would never cheapen by wearing. I can't rightly say how i would have reacted, if someone had handed me a certificate, but i'm pretty damn sure i would be insulted if they later asked me to give them one in return. Cheapens the gesture to no end.
  14. Nice info, thank you for sharing Shorin Ryuu
  15. Well, to me it's not about entertainment. I watch these things to help expand my understanding of the arts, to see things in action, to catch the mistakes, and the finishing moves. The more modern UFCs have far more rules and refereeing, so less 'street' applicable activities are being implemented. The weight classes implemented in the newer UFCs have significantly undermined what can be learned from watching these fights. As well, the actions are more focused on a particular blend of techniques that work well in such events, but would be detrimental outside of the ring. And finally, the first ten show differing systems going head-to-head, while the modern UFCs show people pretty much hitting each other with same or similar techniques/styles. So, if you're into entertainment... i suppose the more modern stuff would be more attractive. That's just not my bag baby.
  16. Well yeah, being butt ugly is a bit of a turn-off.
  17. I have no belt, in any system i've ever studied. And yet, with the information i've shared and insight i've communicated on these boards, does that sound correct? Does it sound like i don't know what i'm talking about, or that i don't have a firm and reasoned understanding of the spirit of the arts, as well as the implementation of techniques and theories? Granted, i could be one of those grand posers, but i'm not. So... does not having a belt somehow diminish my 'degree' of knowledge in the arts? Or, for that matter, does having one somehow enhance one's 'degree' of knowledge in the arts? I was handed a brown, and a black, by the instructor of the dojo i visited while in the military, for entry into competitions back in the 80's... of which i returned immediately afterwards. Their school had more trophies, i had more awareness of my strengths and weaknesses. We went our separate ways. I was also handed a black sash, as a gesture of respect, by a sifu i had studied under and with (sharing insight) for less than a year, and whom i've since lost all contact. I never earned a belt, in the 'so-called' traditional sense, nor do i put any weight on the belts/sash i obtained. I still hold the black sash, a wall ornament hiding in my bedroom. A reminder of the respect i earned from someone i will always remember as a friend, but never a sign of my competence, understanding, or lack thereof. I suppose this was my own personal means to encourage me to continue my studies, and to always keep in mind that the martial arts is a 'lifetime' endeavor, not merely a short-term goal.
  18. Agreed. It's important to maintain proper guard (defensive/offensive readiness) at all times during sparring and competition. Don't allow the 'overprotective' rules of a competition encourage bad habits.
  19. Ahh, thanks for reminding me Bat. Humor. Be able to laugh, joke, and generally be willing to have a good time. One of the things i've heard so many times, is that women like funny guys. Not clowns (Jerry Lewis), not attention-hogs (Jim Carrey), but genuinely funny guys (Mel Gibson).
  20. The tough part about spikes and knives, is being able to be accurate while also maintaining penetration. I.e., power and accuracy.
  21. Please don't tell me it's your English teacher.
  22. Yeah, but Shamrock killed leprechauns! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/White_Warlock/lepmoon.jpg
  23. Hehe, just remember.... there will be a test.
