creating you own martial arts style
equaninimus replied to blaze78_9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Go back a page. Its the fourth post from the bottom. Its quite amusing, although I have the feeling it wasn't meant to be. -
Just make sure that it is actually Tai Chi as martial art, not as "slowrobics." There is a "drop in" Tai Chi class offered through campus rec here at CU Boulder, and after giving it a try, I found out that the instructor is someone who took a weekend "how to teach Tai chi for fitness and fun" class (or something like that), and is actually an aerobics instructor.

I have been thinking about this post, since the Sochin practiced by Shotokan is nowhere near the Sochin practiced by any other style. According to tradition, Funakoshi sent Giko and Ohtsuka to Mabuni to learn this kata, alomng with Niseishi and Gojusjiho. My understanding is that Giko disliked Sochin, and decided to come up with a kata of his own, and just kept the name. Sochin is certainly very "shoto-like" with its emphasis on power and stength.

Certainly Kanku Dai and Jion, since those are the WKF shitei Kata for Shotokan. I would actually select Jitte over Empi, since Jitte (to me, at least) emphasizes the solidity and linearity of force that categorizes Shoto technique better than Empi. For Matsuayashi Shorin Ryu would you agree with the "party line" that Kusanku is the "core Kata" of that style? In BB clas this past Wednesday we worked on Wanchin, the kata Zenryo Shimabukuro (who founded Seibukan) developed. It is something of an amagamation of the "lessons" found in Sesan, Bassai, and Kusanku. I found it rather interesting.

Many of them were, as well as most of the writings. The viagra ad, along with the picture of a woman, naked but for the gi top, as well as the one posed nude, made it rather clear the sexist mentality. Didn't help to find writings of mixed nature in 'women of wushidao' that ran through a variety of discussions on women, sexuality, and the inference of the woman's 'place' being in the kitchen. Anyway... i looked at your site daoshi and am of the impression this is just a 'fleeting' idea. However, if you could direct me to one of your instructors (which your site states are located all over the U.S.) that is in or near San Diego, CA., I would be willing to give it a more indepth examination. I haev to admit I didn't get as far as the "women of wahtever" page. You must have greater bovine residue tolerance than I. -
Well, no. Wado Sesan (and Funakoshi's Hangetsu, from which it is derived) were adaptations of the Itosu version of this same kata. The stance, sesan-dachi, and the slow, tension movements, were likely the result of Funakoshi attmemping to integrate some naha-te principles into his generic karate. In actuality, the version of Sesan practiced by the Funakoshi lineage (Shoto, and Wado) bears great resemblence to that in the video. I would reccomend you watch it again, with an open mind.

What???? Have you been sampling too much viagra from your own website and lost blood flow to the brain? Going to prison implies commiting crimes. We as martial artists (okay, let me correct, I as a martial artist) should strive to be ethincal people. Ethical people do not attempt to go to prison! Thank you for living up to every negative stereotype those of us in the legitimate martial arts community hold about the "mixed martial arts tough guy bar brawler psychopath I like hurting people" group. -
So, the numerous stabbing patients I have taken care of in 19 years of EMS that were still alive have all been figments of my imagination? Somehow I doubt this. If the knife hits a vascular organ like your heart or liver, or severs a major artery than you will likely be DRT (dead right there ). However, damage to the hollow organs, or other soft tissue damage probably won't kill you immediately. Incidentally, I have seen people with knives stuck in their chests, the infamous pulsitile knife wound, where the blade tamponades off the hole in the myocardium, one of whom walked toward us as we pulled on scene, so if the gods love you, you may even survive a stab to the heart! I'm sure his medical bill put some deserving CT surgeon's child though college!

Gotta love the viagra ad on the homepage. That pretty much told me everything I needed to know about the site. I do hope that the pictures they pirated weren't copyrighted! -
In ten years I will probably have plastic knees.

Ours is very close to this version: http://www.dentokanhombu.com/video/shorin/seisan.mpg
-
However, unlike the Itosu lineage schools (Shoto, Wado, Kobayshi Shorin, Shobayashi Shorn) we don't do Sesan as a tension kata. It is done with regular speed/power/kime.
-
In Seibukan, I would have to say Sesan is the "core Kata."

Has it been updated recently? -
Many of the area McDojos also ahev ten "dan-kyu" grades between dan ranks, so the test fees can continue to be built up.

And contriubted to that culturally exceptionalist rant, as well.

HIV is exceptionally difficult to trasnmit. It requireds direct exchange of infected bodily fluidfs. Unless your students are having unprotected sex with each other in the Dojo, or are licking blood spots off the floor, the likelihood of HIV transmission is very small. HIV does not survive in perspiration, and transmission from saliva is exceptionally rare (not that I would recoomend students deep kissing at practice!). The virus also does not survive when outside of blood, or semen. Dry virus is inert virus (in the case of HIV. Influenza is a diferent story). HIV is not carried in tears (so when little timmy bawls because he can't have unprotected sex with the other students, rest assured he isn't spreading HIV.). HIV is not in the bloodstream of all homosexual males, so if you are using fear of HIV as an excuse fro homophobia, you are wrong. Heterosexuals are as likely as homosexuals to carry the virus. http://www.stophiv.com/facts_myths/

Shuko Kai is the Tani-Ha Shito lineage. They may be tournament oriented (Tani's motivation for founding his style was to more effectively compete) but that really depends on the school. I know its big in Scotland, where Tommy Morris has a strong group.

Mostly karate. After I'd been practicing for about five years, I realized that if I ever were to really understand what I was doing, I would need to investigate the traditions of the art. With a * in bio I figured I could get a pretty good handle on the physiology of karate, and I minored in Japanese pretty much to be able to read things not written in English. In fact, when I went for a second BA (in history this time) I had every intention of concentrating on Early Modern Japan. Well, after failing Chinese I two quarters in a row (something one has to have to do Pre Modern Japan) I switched to my current field. I still have an interest in MA history, and read voraciously. In the General MA forum there is a MA history reading list sticky begun by hobbitbob (A charming chap, handsome, modest, and able to separate dojo bunnies from their lacies in the wink of an eye, although a bit hotheaded! (although I have it on great authority he has learned his lesson! ) ) that is a good start for the budding auteur.
