WARNING: Open tournament weapons forms are likely not indicative of proper kobudo technique. This includes forms where people toss weapons into the air and pirouette gracefully around them before performing triple somersaults and landing on their dainty little toesies! Throwing teh bo into the air is an invitation for your opponent to relieve you of your weapon!

Evaluating Martial Arts Programs

GET OUT NOW!!! That group is essentially a cult. Here are some links to the fraud cases brought against them, and a thread on e-budo about them: http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/c/chung/ http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/c/chung/indictment.htm http://www.urbin.net/EWW/MA/cmd-tax.html http://www.rickross.com/reference/chung/chung3.html http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10059&highlight=iron+kim In short, these are bad people. Get out while you can! -
From Matsumora Chinto (Seibukan): First technique:Shift L foot forward to cat stance, L hand extends to shuto position, R hand from overhead shuto to R hand on top "x" position, rotate palm to palm to where L palm is on top, both arms at left side kamae. -From same side wrist grab: Shift your weight to the rear leg, and press the knife edge against the opponenets wrist, locking it into place. Then cover his hand with your right hand (the shift into cat stance pulls the opponent off balance). Rotate his wrist into a palm up position, whilst applaying pressure to the elbow with your L forearm. Second technique: Shift to natural stance, L tettsui uchi, R choku zuki. -This is a continuation: From where you are, grasp his wrist with your R hand, pull his hand to your body as you strike outward with your L tettsui to his face. Press down on his head (bending him backwards in teh process) with the L hand (hikite) as the R hand extends to throw the opponent backwards.

On the other hand I've ridden in a car with mine. Definite fear!

We call them "lock out kicks."

Depends on the style. In Seibukan soto is used to describe the outside-in block. In other styles its the inside out block.

racism in the martial arts
equaninimus replied to blaze78_9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have seen some examples. In my od Uni TKD club there was a distinct group of Vietnamese students who resented being taught TKD (A Korean art, I might add!) by caucasians. -
How much of this is "boundary crossing," as Redmond calls it, and how much is the actions of a "dojo Don Juan," I wonder?

Movie must have!

Forgot about that one. Good Guys Wear Black was also entertaining, as was Lone Wolf McQuade. Lets also add: When Taekwondo Strikes (Jhoon Rhee) and Kill or Be Killed (Stan Schmidt and the members of the Johannesburg JKA). -

Lets not forget one of the best MA films of all time, but usually overlooked in these lists: Roadhouse, with Patrick Swayze. -

L ACL Repair, December 1995: six weeks of PT prior to resuming light practice (AMA, of course! ). L ACL re-repair July 1995. Took a ful three months off that time. It still is doing well. R ACL repair August 2000: Eight weeks recovery. R MCL repair June 2003: Six weeks rtecovery. Doing allright. New injury to patellar tendon this past November. Putting off surgery until August (wil be at the Archivio Vaticani and Bilbiteca Sancto Marco de Venezia doing research this May-July). Still training, but babying the right leg. NB: The injury to the R Patellar Tendon had nothing to do with Karate. It came about when carrying a ~250 lb. patient down a flight of stairs and my partner (who was at the head) lost his grip on the pram. We didn't toss the patient, but we came close!

Don Wong? -
Would that not actually be Singaru rego tekudowno?
-
In Shotokan terminology, soto and uchi refer to the direction of the technique. in just about every other karate style, they seem to refer to the surface used for the technique. Confused yet?

Lesson number one: Stop picking fights with people. you pretty much deserve to get your butt handed to you. -
Considering that Chivalry is a 14th century European concept, I sincerely doubt that it is possible for a Samurai to be "chivalrous." NB: Please guys, invest in spellcheck!

Rohai exists in at least four versions (See Sells, Unante: Secrets of Okinawan Karate (2d Ed.), (Hollywood, CA: Hawley Publications), 266-267.). The Shotokan version, which seems to be based on Rohai Yondan is called Meikyo. Most styles practice variations of Rohai Shodan. Wado does Rohai Nidan.

Thanks to Rig for pointing this out: http://www.tska.co.uk

I love the Matsubayashi version of Rohai, and the Shito version as well.
-
I'm not trying to discredit the Shotokan version of Sochin, which is one of my favourite kata to practice. I actually like it better than the Shito Ryu original. Not sure what that says about me as a MA.
