Let me get this straight. You know Okinawa Kobudo (Ryu Kyu Kobudo) but you have to learn kata from the internet? I'm confused about that. For me though I can tell you that the Okinawa Kobudo I know is from my teacher who is from Okinawa and 8th Dan.

Chinen's teacher was Ei'ichi Miyazato who also was 10th Dan do a google search on Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai

hey its probably good for physical fitness but that's about it! the funny part is where they say "perfection of character" but I have yet to meet a shotokan person who has perfected his character LOL

Did you ever see the early "UFC" like #1-#4? The shotokan lads got the living crap kicked out of them, so to say the shotokan waza can be used in combat man I would not want your shotokan army protecting my country! The shotokan guys are the best fighters for AAU or WAKO or WKF or what-ever and when 3 guys do a team UNSU it its magical but that's where it ends SPORT not real life combat in the jungle sorry.

Put it this way, free sparring is only for sport not self defense...so if you do a lot of jiyu kumite then your focus is sport even if you never go to a tournament. Also if you focus on making your kata look good rather than the bunkai / oyo then your focus is for sport even if you never ever go to a tournament.

Shotokan is really only for sport. If you want to learn the real "shotokan" try Okinawa Shorin Ryu that is the real style of Funakoshi Gichin.

His name is Masaji Taira from Naha Okinawa. He teaches Okinawa Goju Ryu but does not teach people who he does not know.

Tenryu no kon is a very popular beginner bo kata for many styles. As for Gekisai YES there is one Okinawa style of goju ryu who practices "Gekisai No Bo" and "Gekisai No Sai" the goju teachers name is Yagi Meitoku (who passed away in 2003) Now his 2 sons maintain the tradition, they are Yagi Meitatsu and Yagi Meitetsu.

Kururunfa, Seisan and Suprinpei all have very difficult parts to them. My fave are Sepai, Kururunfa and Suparinpei. What Associations do you Goju guys belong to?
