  1. Better living thru chemicals
  2. Why do they require a driver's license? at best a scam, at worst a cult.
  3. I will never understand this fascination with conditioning the knucles. First, nerves don't "die a little". They die. If you kill the small sub-cuteanous nerves, you fell less surface pain. You may also lose some of the finer motor skills. The human hand is a marvel of engineering, why do you want to destroy it? Bones aquire more mass when the body deposits calcium to fill fractures. The larger the knucle grows, the more restrictive the range of motion. Also, arthritis is not inevitable. It is a degenerative joint disease. Why help it by destrouing the joints first? Unless you make a substantial living out of bare knucle striking, it's just not worth it.
  4. Your friend is a compete, total and absolute MORON. Forget the GP. Go to the nearest hospital. You'll need X-Rays. Sounds like it's broken. I hope it has not started to heal yet. If the bone starts to heal while not in place, it needs to be re-broken. Hell man, you're in England. National healthcare and all. It's free. What are you waiting for? Swelling, severe bruising and loss of movement always indicate bad trauma.
  5. Make it worth their while. I'd start in a church or community centre. Somewhere that has no facilities other than the training area. Then when you move to your own location with gym, showers, etc, they will pay more.
  6. Can't stand it. If they can't spend the time to write properly, I won't take the time to read or reply.
  7. Buddy, you sound like me.
  8. I started at 20, 24 and again at 42
  9. I'm in good shape. Round is a good shape...
  10. I'd go for a wood floor. If you need padding, buy some gym mats. As to the height, a bo is 6' tall. So your height with arms extended + 6' + 3' for extra clearence. I'm 5'10", my arms extend 18" above my head. So I need abou 7'6" to extend my arms, add 6' feet for the bo and now you're at 13'6", add additional clearance and you are looking at about 16' high. You only that height over the area required to train with the bo.
  11. Not so surprising. We all get told to punch straight out.
  12. Flags are going up and bells are rigning. I'd have a good second look at your school if the sensei has that kind of attitude.
  13. Breath normally. AS for push ups, the index will touch slightly. The most important thing is a straight alignment of the wrist.
  14. Just make sure you wash it in COLD water and hang it to dry otherwise the gi will shrink . A LOT.
  15. You can break your toes with shoes on. I cracked a toe kicking a soccer ball with shoes on. Speaking of, ever notice that the soccer players use the side of the foot?
  16. Unless you intend to make a living at it, it's still just a hobby. I train hard, I push myself to my limits, but I will still train safely. Once you pass that point of discomfort, you no longer train effectively.
  17. Key is MUTUAL respect. the teacher should also respect the students. A long, strenous workout with no chance for re-hydration will lead to students not training as hard to conserve energy.
  18. That encounter takes what? 15-20 minutes tops? That's a far cry from 2 hours.
  19. I hold my legs in the extended fron kick position while watching TV. I've been known to also watch TV standing in a horse stance to condition my legs. It's amazing how long you can do a static activity when yhe mind is otherwise occupied. Of course it helps to be able to foc... OOOOH, shiny ball.....
  20. A hard 2 hour class without a water break borders on the dangerous.
  21. Use the ball. Work on curling your toes. It takes a LOT of practice. We kick with the foot extended out (like you would be on tip-toes) and curl the toes. All the muscles are working against each other. It is possible.
  22. Remember that the muscle that works is the one that contracts. To extend your arm, the triceps contracts. The bu=icep is involved in retractting the strike. SImple way to look at it: the tricep delivers the strike and the bicep brings it back.
  23. SHINGUARDS!!! Even for light contact. Came up shin on shin 2 months ago. The ematoma has just disapeared!!!!
  24. Main question is WHY???? Other than it looks cool, it's useless in combat. You should never attempt to kick higher than waist high. I had a Sensei once tell me that a kick to the head was a great fight-ender, but first you should bring your opponents head 3 feet from the ground!!
