  1. You are severely obese. Seek medical attention. A doctor and nutritionist should follow your progress. As a general rule, reduce catbs and eliminate processed sugar.
  2. But since they're working at a fast pace, shouldn't they produce much more lactic acid, thus causing more muscular pain than squats or pushups? Following you logic, muscular endurance cannot be worked separately from cardio endurance. Guess that elliminates the need for any type of enduarance work aside from swimming, such as callisthenics. Quite correct. However, the slower you work the muscle, the less oxygen they require, thus the less stress on the cardio. You can work on your leg endurance by walking 20 miles a day. That will require considerably less cadio work than running 20 miles. Running involves the largest muscle group in the body working at peak capacity, requiring a large amount of oxynated blood, requiring the heart and lungs to work harder to supply. Push ups require a fraction of that energy. Competitive swimming involves both legs and arms muscles, and the accompanying increase in cardio, without the nasty effects of pounding the ground with every step.
  3. Best of luck. I sincerely hope it works out for you. Just be ready to deal with the idiots trying to pick fights with you.
  4. You are the oldest and in grade 13. That implies younger grades in the school. Leave the gi at home. You also mention that you'd be doing it only a couple of times a week, because you're in the dojo 4 times a week. Have you considered just training at the dojo? Even if you train in seats, in the weight room, some immature idiot will see you and hassle you. Use the gym for normal workout, push ups, sit ups, stretching. Maybe you can make use of their weight training equipment.
  5. Because push-ups involves small muscles working slowly, while running involces the largest muscle group in the body working at a fast pace. Serious swimming involves all of the muscles in the body.
  6. Yes I know. The point being that the belt, or gi, is nothing magical. It's an attire to workout in.
  7. Does not compute. Any exercise that requires prolonged, arduous activity by the mucular system will require an influx of oxigen to those muscles. That in turn taxes your cardio-vascular.
  8. The belt is to keep the gi closed.
  9. Swim. More complete workout. Gentler on the joints. Ask your friend to do the 'fly for a mile
  10. It is up to your level of comfort and self-conciousness whether to train in your gi in a public place. The rule is a little bizarre. Taken literally, they should never start training anybody.
  11. Milk also has a tendency to upset your digestive system, and create a large amount of mucus.
  12. Trust somebody recovering from back surgery, they also work the lower back some
  13. Whichever one I'm trying to master at the time.
  14. ooo... new word. What's it mean? Back operation to remove the herniated portion of a disc. Not as radical as fusion, but still a pain.
  15. As was mentioned, fat people work to the weight increase slowly. It is also distributed all over the body. The vest will have shouldrs, and if really well built, some of the hips carry the weight. Very hard on the lower (L4 to S1) vertabrae.
  16. Go see a doctor. It probably was broken and may have healed wrong. It may need to be re-broken and then reset. The lady at the clinic was only partially right. True, you can't immobilize a broken toe more than buddy taping, but it must be set right first. Good luck.
  17. There reaches a time when relieving the pain is not adequate. My disk had herniated to a dimension of abou 1/4" square. It just had to go. Recovery is coming along. It ucks that I can't train. OTOH, the 10 lbs max on lift gets me out of doing a ton of stuff around the house.
  18. Sciatic nerve pain will be felt at the back of the leg. Typically when you try to stand froma sitting position. It is usually caused by bulging/herniated disks at either L4-L5 or L5-S1. Symptoms typically go away after a few weeks. Chiropractic or physiotherapy treatments can help, as can anti-inflamatory medication. If symptoms do not go away after about 3 months or get worse then surgery may be indicated. The procedure takes about 4 hours, normally done as an outpatient procedure, and full recovery takes about 3 months. How do I know all this? I'm 6 weeks in my 12 week recovery period from surgery for it. It sucks big time. For more info http://www.medinfo.co.uk/conditions/sciatica.html
  19. I'm tired to hear how Tillman is a hero. He is a man of conviction, he did what he believed in. For that, he is worthy of praise. I was sick and tired to hear abou Jessica Lynch (sp?) as well. How about the other nameless, faceless kids who are dying over there. How about the black kids from the ghetto who joined the military to learn a trade and escape his daily life in 'the 'hood'? It is time that news outlet start showing the coffins coming back on the 11 o'clock news so that the people will realize what is happening there.
  20. I agree. 'Nam was stupid. Iraq is highly debatable. BUT don't crap on the people who are sent over there. They do't make the policy.
  21. Nice advice. They won't be bothering you while you sit in jail on an assault rap. Talk to teachers, principal, guidance counselor.
  22. Not true and overall bad advice. Doctors generally will not X-ray a toe because treatment for a dislocated/bruised/broken toe is the same. You can't put a broken toe in a cast. Toe injuries are fixed by buddy-tapping the toes together. Then REST. You have to give the break time to heal. If you keep moving it, even when taped, it will move and probably not set properly. Remeber, if it's painful there is still something wrong with it.
  23. A herniated disc, especially on the lower back, would put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots and make you experience pain in the back on the leg, and loss of the reflex on the knee and the achile's tendon.
  24. I have a choice of paying for 3, 6 or 12 months. The cost per month goes down as the term lenghtens. I usually pay for 3 months, for both my son and me. It's mostly a cash flow thing.
