Murphy's Laws of Martial Arts The wimp who made it through the eliminations on luck alone will suddenly turn into Bruce Lee when you're up against him. The referee will always be looking the other way when you score. The day you leave work early to make it to class on time, the instructor will be sick. The instructor will only use you during demonstrations for joint-locking techniques. If you have to use your training in self-defense, your attacker's father will be a lawyer. After a flawless demonstration, you will trip on your way back to your seat. After years of training without a single injury, you will pull a groin muscle the night before your black belt grading. In an otherwise vacant locker room, the only other person will have the locker right next to yours. No matter how many times you take care of it before your grading, you will invariably have to go to the bathroom when it's your turn.

There were two old buddies who continued to compete in karate tournaments well past their prime. One day, while relaxing after yet another competition, they were chatting and wondering if there is karate in heaven and made a pact that whoever passed away first would come back and let the other know. About a week later one of the old Karateka passed away. About a month after that the surviving old Karateka was at yet another competition when all of a sudden he saw an apparition. Sure enough it was his old buddy who had come back to see him. "Well, please tell me," asked the surviving Karateka. "Are there karate competitions in heaven?" "I have good news and bad news for you," replied the apparition to his old karate buddy. "The good news is that, yes, there are karate competitions in heaven. The bad news is that your first match is against Gichin Funakoshi the day after tomorrow."

Rich67, do you have any links to websites that show hanging raises being performed correctly? Thanks.

I have some of those - they're pretty good, considering the cheapness of the price.

Sorry to hear that Tammy. Your policy of considering it "his loss" is the best way to go. He don't know wot he be missin', girl!!

Please remember to keep posts free from personal attacks and to try and keep the thread on topic. Thanks. -
Where is your MA school located? By that I mean, is it in a shopping mall or in someone's garage/house or a rented hall (such as a church hall) or is it in a purpose-built place? Or somewhere else?

Martial Arts in the public school system.
aefibird replied to manuelito's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
When I was in Comprehensive School (equiv. to Junior High & High School) the girls were given a 'self-defence' course. it was taught by a TKD guy (whom I'm since good friends with) and a Ju-Jitsu guy, as his assistant. The school had to have 2 different martial arts teachers from 2 different systems, just in case anyone accused the school of teaching TKD instead of 'self-defence'. Well, the classes were very basic and so watered down as to not offend anyone as to be almost ineffectual. It wasn't the fault of the TKD and the JJ instructors; they really knew their stuff, it was just that they basically had their hands tied by the law and the requirements of the school as to what they could and couldn't teach. That was in the mid-'90's, before the crazy 'sue everyone for anything' culture really hit the UK. The most worrying thing for me is the fact that some of those women will have done that SD course at school and will never have done anything similar again. Yet, they will be convinced that they 'know self-defence' and would be able to competently fend off a brutal atacker. -
Martial Arts in the Family.
aefibird replied to manuelito's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm technically the 2nd generation, as my father trained to blackbelt level in Judo. My older brother also trained in Judo. However, I was never alowed to take martial arts when I was living with my parents, which was a very hypocritical attitiude, as my sibling was allowed to train. I was never shown any MA techniques by my father and my bro just used to use his Judo knowledge to try and beat me up and get me into trouble (as older brothers often do with their younger sisters ). So... I'm sort of 1st and 2nd generation. -
The students at my karate club don't clean the dojo; it's usually myself or Sensei who does the cleaning up.

Hi! Welcome to Karate Forums.

I think that it can be a useful thing to train in, especially if the 'tempo' and 'pace' of the training is varied. It sure can sharpen up a persons timing!

Shorin Ryuu, thank you for your apology. Sometimes, it can be difficult for a person to properly 'get across' the point they were trying to make, and so misunderstandings happen and tempers flare. Hopefully this thread will be able to continue peacefully and informatively. Ah, you've been bitten by the Martial Arts bug I see! Well, don't worry, I think that particular insect has bitten the rest of us on here too...

Just a fun hypothetical question

I generally like the belt system, although I'd get rid of a few grades. Maybe just have white, green, brown and black. Good thread, Shorin Ryuu! -
What federation are you a part of?
aefibird replied to Fiona's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Isn't it hard to be learning all those styles at once? I would love to learn multiple styles but at the same time.. Is it hard to keep what you've learned from bleeding into the other arts you practice? Well, I only really train in 2 styles - Wing Chun and Karate. The Kobudo is part of my Karate training. It would be a lot harder for me I think If I didn't already have a decent grounding in Shotokan. I'd suggest to anyone who wants to train in more than one style to get a good base in their primary art first (eg brown or black belt or equivalent) before adding other stuff.
