naw, I've done that before. I've got quite a few gi's and I often 'mix and match' the tops & bottoms (usually, if I'm gonna be late for class and I'm rushing out of the house - I usually just grab whatever gi top and pants I can. Sometimes, I don't always check closely to see if I have a top and a bottom, I've gone to training several times with either 2 pairs of trousers or 2 gi tops... luckily my club has a 'spares' box with old gi's in it, so I usually just help myself from there and hope no-one notice!).

lol, true for a lot of us I think!

What would you change about your style?
aefibird replied to CloudDragon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, someone once donated some old school gym mats, but my instructor never uses them. He's a true old school Sensei in that respect and a bit of a "well, if it was good enough for me to train without mats in the 60's/70's then it's good enough for you..." type of person. -
Cross Training: Is three to much to handle?
aefibird replied to Mu Ryuk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with the other posters. 3 MA's aren't too much, unless you have a lot of other comittments. You have to try and get an even balance between training and the rest of your life. Prioritise and decide which MA's you'd really prefer to train in. It's better to be able to give your all to 1 (or 2) martial arts than be too tired to train properly in 3. However, if you think you'll be able to handle it, then give it a go for a few weeks. Even if you have to drop one of your MA's after a couple of weeks then there's no shame in that. Everyone's human - we all have a life to fit in, instead of just being a machine who trains. -
What every serious Martial Artist should never wear
aefibird replied to Red J's topic in General Chat
Another no-no - multi-coloured gi's, especially the monstrosity I saw being worn at the last tourney I went to. Red, blue and yellow with black stripes down the sides, all topped off with a camouflage coloured belt. Yuk! -
Sorry to hear that. Hope it heals up soon. How did you do in the tourney?

I'd only want more sweeps if we got mats. Nice thick, soft mats, with plenty of padding for a bruised karateka... *dreams* We do quite a lot of sweeps in my club as it is (my Sensei is fond of them), but it sure hurts being swept full pelt onto a solid wooden floor! -
Martial Arts Clubs This only applies to Martial Arts schools in the UK. It's a new(ish) website that I've found that has free listings for any style MA club within the UK. I know that clubs are often looking for ways to attract new members, so this is another way to 'get your name known'.

I'd like cooler gi's, but by that I mean literally cooler gi's. Training in a red-hot room without air conditioning or any open-able windows is a nightmare... -
What federation are you a part of?
aefibird replied to Fiona's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well, I don't do TKD... but my karate school is a founder member of the Federation of Shotokan Karate, and also registered with the English Karate Governing Body. My Wing Chun school is a member of Samuel Kwok's Martial Art's schools, and also registered with the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts. They also train in TKD at the Wing Chun school I'm with. They're ITF affilliated. Most of the TKD schools in my area are with the WTF, though. -

Help needed with a Christmas Quiz - Yes I realise its early!
aefibird replied to angelica d's topic in General Chat
Here's a few more I thought up: What is the alternative (ie Japanese) name for 'rising block'? What colour belts are worn in most point sparring competitions? (red and blue) What colour belt does ______ have? (Insert name of someone at your club!) What is the name of the first kata that students learn? What is Gohon Ippon Kumite? What is an Oi-zuki? What colour gi's do our club usually wear? What language do we often use in Karate, other than English? -
What have you been up to today? I've had a bit of a 'lazy' day today, as I'm off work on holiday. I visited the physiotherapist this afternoon and went to Karate training tonight. Afterwards, I had a couple of games of pool.

It just makes me sad that people feel that they have to 'defend' their style (I know, I've done it on numerous occasions with Shotokan!). I thought we were all supposed to be martial artists here, not style bashers? Hey, so a style isn't for a particular person? That's OK, but it may be 100% suitable for another person. I might not be a big fan of Style X or Style Y but the fact that those styles aren't for me doesn't give me the right to go around bad mouthing them to all and sundry, or spreading falsehoods or half-truths. They may be the best styles in the world (and therefore very suitable) for another person. Sorry for the mini-rant, but there is enough negative press about the martial arts from outside them , without MA students adding to it. Lets all try to pull in the same direction guys.

Was he really that good???
aefibird replied to yireses's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
lol, certainly not me. heck I wouldn't want to fight him if he was 80! I'm sure he could kick my posterior.... I don't believe that he was 'the best' or 'the greatest' martial artist, but I have a lot of respect for him and his MA. -
